• Network inefficiency: as demonstrated by our
study, network resources are used sub-optimally.
• Traffic aggregation: it is very hard, if not
impossible to perform traffic aggregation since
traffic sources and destination are not chosen
deterministically.
• Manageability: it is very hard to forecast and
monitor traffic since user behaviour is
unpredictable and traffic sources and destination
are not deterministic. Network dimensioning,
planning, and control are also difficult.
• Economic models: it is hard to think of a way for
the network operator to profit from P2P streaming
when most charging models are based on flat rates.
Our proposal is to look for algorithms that employ a
certain degree of cross-layer optimization but that
retain the simplicity of existing approaches to the best
possible extent. In the second part of this article we
give an example of a possible way to improve network
efficiency and, ultimately, quality of experience.
Our study suggests that the prospects of P2P streaming
seem very good if the scalability of this approach is
assessed from the application (or even the user) view
point. However, if we look from the angle of the
network operator the scenario is rather different.
Tackling the complex issue of P2P streaming in
isolation from network and network management and
dimensioning problems is not promising. Simple yet
effective approaches based on cross-layer techniques
are significantly more powerful.
