Art Schools on the grounds of a former
golf course in Havana, Cuba. Construction
of their radical designs began immediately
and the school's first classes soon
followed. Dancers, musicians and artists
from all over the country reveled in the
beauty of the schools, but as the dream of
the Revolution quickly became a reality,
construction was abruptly halted and the
architects and their designs were deemed
irrelevant in the prevailing political climate.
Forty years later the schools are in use,
but remain unfinished and decaying.
Castro has invited the exiled architects
back to finish their unrealized dream.
UNFINISHED SPACES features intimate
footage of Fidel Castro, showing his
devotion to creating a worldwide
showcase for art, and it also documents
the struggle and passion of three
revolutionary artists.
CORPORATIONS? CORPORATIONS? APPLE,
APPLE,
NEWS NEWS CORP CORP & & GOOGLE GOOGLE
GOOGLE
This film looks at three famous companies
in the world of media and technology and
explores the ethics of their approach to
business.
APPLE has amazing products, but they're
made by people in China who work long
hours for small wages. Some workers
have even killed themselves: the
"Foxconn Suicides". Apple now monitors
its suppliers for compliance with its
standards – but is this enough?
NEWS CORP is a global media empire
with famous brands like the Sun and Fox
News. Founder Rupert Murdoch was once
praised for taking on the print unions and
he wielded huge power over society and
politicians. But his papers have been
criticised for promoting racism and
homophobia. Now the hacking scandal
has shaken his empire to the core. Is there
an alternative to big companies controlling
our media?
GOOGLE: Launched in a dorm room by
two students, Google is now a massive
global success story. But has it been TOO
successful? Does it have too much of our
personal information? And how do we
know what they're going to do with it?
Britain's Information Commission Officer
explains his concerns.
INFLUENCE AND
NEGOTIATION
ACTING ACTING WITH WITH POWER
POWER
With Deborah Gruenfeld
How you speak has far greater impact
than what you actually say.
The body language of power, and
how to use it.
Why it's risky to act more important
than you are.
Working well with others is critical to
professional success, yet many people
struggle with "authority issues" that can
block their progress. Professor Gruenfeld
combines research on the psychology of
power with the acting skills of the theater
to illustrate how our nonverbal behavior
affects how we are perceived in a
hierarchy—far more than the words or
arguments we use. In fact, she notes, our
words account for only 7% of our
argument's impact.
The good news is that we can control how
we are perceived by using our body
language to influence others. From how
we hold ourselves to how we speak, Dr.
Gruenfeld explores the ways to "play high"
when we want to be authoritative, and
"play low" when it's more advantageous to
be approachable. In the end, she notes,
we're judged not on the quality of our
argument, but on how we act and how we
make others feel.
INNOVATION
INTELLIGENT INTELLIGENT STRATEGY
STRATEGY
With Richard Rumelt
Steve Jobs' plan for Apple in 1997:
hatchet job or strategy?
 Why financial performance goals are
not strategy.
 Creating proximate goals and "riding
the wave" of change.
Bad strategy is long on goals and vision
and short on presenting a coherent set of
actions for actually solving the
fundamental problems facing an
organization. Good strategy, on the other
hand, flows from an honest diagnosis of
your most critical challenge coupled with
an action plan for specific objectives that
your organization can reasonably
accomplish to overcome that challenge.
Drawing on the successes of General
Motors in the 1920s, NASA's Apollo
program, Cisco, IKEA, and Nvidia,
Professor Rumelt defines five elements of
good strategies. First, use analytic tools to
develop insight into the nature of your
challenge. Then, define achievable
proximate objectives toward your goal,
recognize and ride the wave of change in
your industry, build a "chain link" barrier to
competition, and finally, expect and
overcome entropy and inertia from within.
In a land whose roots are so entangled
with myths and legends of the past, it is no
surprise that Ireland's lighthouses, located
in some of the most unspoiled and
picturesque places of that beautiful isle,
are surrounded by tales of danger,
The lighthouses whose stories are told
which was called The Teardrop of Ireland
because during the days of emigration for
many it would be their last sight of Ireland;
