THE THE MAYA MAYA GODS
GODS
Over 3000 years ago the Maya emerged
from the mists of history and created a
civilization which lasted six times as long
as the Roman Empire.
Between 750 and 900 A.D. these people
abandoned their cities, apparently without
reason. The disappearance of the Maya is
as mysterious as their rapid rise from
nowhere. Yet the veil surrounding these
people is gradually being lifted.
A small group of scientists is currently
decoding, character by character, the
missives of this jungle people.
The research scientists are constantly
discovering ever more amazing and
fascinating facts about a culture which we
normally only associate with inhospitable
temple pyramids and cruel blood
sacrifices.
CULTURES CULTURES - VENICE: VENICE: THE
THE
INSATIABLE INSATIABLE CITY CITY-STATE
CITY CITY STATE
Venice – a romantic, melancholy city, this
we know. But insatiable? And yet this latter
characteristic defines Venice more aptly
than anything else. For it was in this spirit
that Venice emerged. In was the spirit of
merchants dedicated to exploring any way
of buying the best goods at the best price,
who undertook arduous and perilous
journeys so that they could offer for sale
the most exquisite, precious objects and
who risked everything for the chance of
amassing even more gold. Only against
this background is it possible to
understand why the lagoon city was able
to develop into the trading city of the
Mediterranean and how it became a
cosmopolitan city whose wealth was the
envy of princes throughout the world.
CHANG'AN CHANG'AN - THE THE CRADLE
CRADLE
OF OF CHINESE CHINESE CIVILIZAT
CIVILIZATION:
CIVILIZAT ION:
Xi'an, the ancient Chinese Chang'an is an
important site of the world's cultures.
The city on the Yellow River with its
surroundings is one of the birthplaces of
Chinese culture and civilization.
North-east of Xi'an, in 1974, the clay army
of the first Chinese emperor, with its
thousands of warriors, was discovered.
Here, too, his huge burial mound, still
unopened, is situated. And it was here that,
by uniting the country for the first time,
Emperor Qin Shihuangdi founded the
series of Chinese imperial dynasties which
extends up to the present day.
Xi'an, Chang'an was the capital city of the
Tang dynasty and the starting point of the
Silk Road, which led to the Mediterranean.
It was here that merchants and artists from
all over the world met, here there emerged
an exceptionally vibrant, festive culture, in
which women enjoyed equal status and
took part in all activities of social and
cultural life.
The film shows the excavation site of the
clay army, in detail which was hitherto
impossible; it takes us to the sites of Tang
culture, shows the treasures in the
museums and, in a performance of the
Tang theatre, it also shows the magnificent,
colorful dancing and music of this time. It
takes us to the imperial tombs of the Han
and Tang eras, allows us to witness
Buddhist rituals in a famous temple and
invites us to stroll through the city's Muslim
district and to visit the Great Mosque of
Xi'an.
