public purse, too. Some say the money
would be better spent on other areas, such
as green technology. BAE has also been
accused of being too close to the UK
government, with former civil servants and
ex-ministers regularly coming to work for
them: the "revolving door syndrome".
BAE's supporters say we need an arms
industry to defend ourselves. Critics say
making arms is immoral.
CRIMINALS
CRIMINALS
Even after stealing millions from innocent
victims or bilking charities, first-time
non-violent offenders are eligible for
parole after serving as little as one-sixth of
their sentence. Free to go with what some
see as a slap on the wrist, some crooks
and cons are released and at risk to
re-offend without being required to pay
restitution to their victims.
As Bill C-59 — the Abolition of the Early
Parole Act — winds through Parliament
and makes its way to the Senate, Hana
Gartner takes a look at the cons and
crimes of two fraudsters previously
featured on the fifth estate and reveals
what's become of them since they were
FOLKLORE
I I I DREAM DREAM OF OF MUMMERS
MUMMERS
By Adela Peeva
I Dream of Mummers is a story about a
custom, called kukeri, in which masked
people dance at the end of Winter and the
beginning of Spring. The custom's origins
are hidden far back in the past — a
tradition that has become part of the
history of an entire nation. It is found in
many places in Bulgaria, but here, in the
village of Sushitsa, it has almost
completely preserved its authenticity and
can still be seen as it was performed
centuries ago.
For people here, this is the biggest feast of
the year, and today, on its eve, the entire
village is preparing for the celebration.
Bells are tinkling, costumes and masks
are taken out of drawers and attics.
Everything looks just as it did in an old
newsreel found in the National Film
Archives. In 1942 — more than 60 years
ago — cameras filmed the same
celebration in the same village. Here the
tradition is handed down from generation
to generation, from father to son, and
when shown this archival footage, some
people in the village recognized their
fathers and grandfathers. One man
recognized his father and another saw his
grandfather as a young man with curly
mustache.
This is a film about a small village and its
inhabitants, about an ancient tradition that
they have preserved almost intact to this
day, and about a friendship as undying as
the tradition itself.
PROGRAMMED PROGRAMMED TO TO TO BE BE FAT
FAT
Obesity in Canada has doubled in less
than 30 years. 59 per cent of all
Canadians are now either overweight or
obese. A small group of scientists have
begun looking beyond the obvious
because of a group that can't chew, let
alone jog: infant obesity rose more than 70
per cent in just 20 years. You can't blame
them for unhealthy lifestyles. The
scientists suspect that, starting in the
womb, man-made chemicals may be
triggering changes to our metabolism that
result in lifelong weight gain.
