IN IN THE THE FOOTSTEPS FOOTSTEPS OF
OF
VIVALDI
VIVALDI
Today, the music of Vivaldi is universally
adored. His Four Seasons is perhaps the
most recognized piece of Baroque music
ever written.
But the man behind the music was much
less well understood. The celebrated
composer lived with wealth, yet died in
poverty. He led the life of a Catholic priest,
yet was constantly surrounded by an
entourage of beautiful women and had a
love affair with at least one of his young
students.
Our cameras travel from Venice to Vienna
to discover the truth behind his tumultuous
life and his celebrated music.
JASCH JASCHA JASCH A HEIFETZ: GOD'S
FIDDLER
FIDDLER
Director: Peter Rosen
In this revealing documentary about the
legendary musician we see vintage filmed
performance clips of Jascha Heifetz and
learn that he was the first truly modern
violin virtuoso, the man about whom Itzhak
Perlman said, "When I spoke with him, I
thought, 'I can't believe I'm talking with
God'."
This insightful film portrays an artist for
whom only perfection would do, a musical
wunderkind who went on to set the
standards for nearly a century.
We get to know Jascha Heifetz through
home movies and personal family photos
taken from 1903-1987, a prestigious
concert artist so well known in popular
culture, his name became shorthand for
greatness, for everyone from Jack Benny
to The Muppets to Woody Allen.
This unique program includes interviews
with the great violinists of his generation,
and from many of his former students,
telling how Heifetz was a legendary but
mysterious figure whose story embodies
the dual nature of artistic genius: the
paradox of how a mortal man lives with
immortal gifts - gifts he must honor, but
which extract a life long price.
Are the man and the artist the same
person? What is the price each pays? And
who was the man behind the music?
This illuminating program helps answer
these questions about one of the greatest
musicians of our time.
JOURNEY JOURNEY OF OF DMITRY
DMITRY
SHOSTAKOVICH, SHOSTAKOVICH, A
A
The greatest composer of the 20th century
remains one of its biggest mysteries.
Nine days of the ocean voyage from
Moscow to New York comprise the nine
chapters of this documentary film about
Dmitry Shostakovich.
Unique, highly personal fragments of the
composer's life are contrasted with the
ideologically charged propaganda of the
Soviet liner's staged shipboard events.
The film reveals the personality of the
quiet, retiring man who disliked publicity
but was obliged to serve as a Soviet public
figure; a genius faced with the choice
between artistic freedom and harsh
ideology, between truth and survival.
Shostakovich's music, full of dark sarcasm
and breathtaking lyricism, exaggerated joy
and frightening celebration, plays the
leading part in the film.
LEGACY LEGACY OF OF ROSINA
ROSINA
LHEVINNE, LHEVINNE, THE: THE: A A
A
PORTRAIT PORTRAIT OF OF OF THE THE
THE
LEGENDARY LEGENDARY LEGENDARY PIANIST
PIANIST
The Legacy of Rosina Lhevinne: A Portrait
of the Legendary Pianist explores the
nature of art, creativity and the human
potential through the extraordinary life and
accomplishments of the legendary
Russian pianist and master teacher
Rosina Lhevinne (1880-1976).
In this film we will learn how her career
blossomed after age 65, as she taught
such now world-famous pupils as John
Browning, Van Cliburn, Misha Dichter,
James Levine, Hiroko Nakamura, Kun
Woo Paik, Daniel Pollack, Jeffrey Siegel,
and John Williams. They recount how
Lhevinne profoundly influenced them with
her 19th century pianistic tradition,
inspired them with her humanity, and
encouraged them to develop their
individuality.
Rosina Lhevinne's remarkable solo
performing career began at age 75 and
climaxed at age 82 when she made her
spectacular debut with the New York
Philharmonic under the direction of
Leonard Bernstein, playing Chopin's Piano
Concerto in E minor.
This extraordinarily beautiful performance,
as well as her previously unreleased
chamber music recordings, is heard
throughout the film.
The Lhevinne story is told in her own
words through informal conversations,
recording sessions, archival film and
teaching footage. Adding a special
dimension are her students' performances
and many insightful interviews with her
colleagues: pianist Arthur Rubinstein,
musicologist Nicolas Slonimsky, violinist
Robert Mann, and her daughter Marianna
Lhevinne Graham.
Mme. Lhevinne's passion for life and
music infuses the documentary, educating
and inspiring the viewer. The Legacy of
Rosina Lhevinne: A Portrait of the
Legendary Pianist stands as a testament
to the resiliency of the human spirit and its
ability to endure, transform, nurture and
flourish.
