Cap d’Antibes - Eden Roc
At home with the stars: The glamorous white-walled Hôtel
du Cap is one of the most luxurious resorts in the world. Set
in a 25-acre pine wood, this legendary hotel re-creates a 19th
century château. The hotel comprises the original Grand
Hôtel du Cap (1889) and Eden Roc, the old tea room built
in 1914 around which the world’s most beautiful swimming
4
pool was dug from rock. Initially a refuge, first to artists
and writers, then to the great European aristocracy, this
beautiful estate now receives celebrities and globetrotters
in search of unique, discreet luxury. Aficionados included
Marlene Dietrich, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and
Winston Churchill.
Côte d’Azur - Pullman Express
Speed matters: The French de luxe train, the Côte d’Azur
Pullman Express ran from December 1929 until May 1939.
Combining large images and bold text, posters advertising
its services were a uniquely effective medium to celebrate
the excitement of travel by fast train, and became fixtures
on kiosks and in the railway stations of Europe, tempting
the traveller to the glamour of the Côte d’Azur. During the
Art Deco period travel posters underwent a remarkable
transformation in design, with world-famous artists such as
Cassandre and Broders transforming advertising posters from
illustration to symbol, simplifying the travel poster to a single
illustration, with fewer details, and often dramatic power.
Nice - Côte d’Azur
Beyond elegant: In the early 20th century, Nice was at the
centre of all that was decadent and fashionable about
the Côte d’Azur. Well-heeled Brits flocked there to enjoy
the balmy weather and bountiful social activities on offer,
while the rest of Europe shivered through the autumn and
winter. England’s lasting legacy to Nice is the Promenade
6
des Anglais - the 5km path built along the edge of the
gently curving Baie des Anges soon became the place
to see and be seen. The couple in this poster are shown
overlooking the Promenade from the balcony of the Hôtel
Negresco, the venerable Nice institution still favoured by
discerning visitors.
Les Plages de St. Tropez
Luxe familiar: With more than 40 beaches on the peninsula,
St. Tropez is is the ultimate see-and-be-seen spot in all of
Europe. Le Figaro once noted St. Tropez in summer presents
“the greatest number of famous faces per square meter.”
The town remains an almost clichéd picture-postcard: from
pink ochre buildings with red-tile roofs and blue and white
shutters to historic forts crowning craggy rocks overseeing
the masts that sprout from huge yachts in the sparkling
sapphire water. Today, the former fishing village is best
known as international party central - at night St. Tropez
transforms into a playground for the famous and soon-tobe
famous, with prices to match.
Cannes - Feux d’Artifice
Those who Cannes: One of the best known cities on the
French Riviera, nowadays Cannes is synonymous with the
glamour of its Film Festival in May. Originally hosted on
1 September 1939, Cannes’ inaugural film festival only
managed its opening night before being closed down
following the outbreak of World War II the same weekend,
8
re-emerging for a second attempt on 20 September 1946
- the rest, as they say, is history. Depicted here is a couple
enjoying a spot of champagne at the world-renowned
Carlton Hotel, watching the Bastille Day fireworks lighting
up the sky along the palm-tree lined La Croisette.
Beaulieu-sur-Mer
Viva la Riva: A true jewel of the Côte d’Azur, to this day
Beaulieu-sur-Mer maintains its old-world charm. Pictured
here is a Riva Aquarama pulling into Beaulieu’s yacht
harbour - praised as the Ferrari of the boat world because
of its speed, beauty and craftsmanship, the Aquarama is
the most famous of Carlo Riva’s designs. First built in 1962,
over time the Aquarama has become more than just a
boat - it is celebrated as a nautical legend in its own right.
Its evocative name is derived in part from the widescreen
Cinerama movie format, popular in the early 1960s, which
is echoed by the boat’s wide windshield.
Juan-les-Pins - Antibes
Where do you go to (my lovely): Juan-les-Pins was popular
with the international jet-set long before Peter Sarstedt’s
1969 number one hit. Boasting attractive sandy beaches,
a famed night-life and the beautiful Promenade au Soleil,
it remains as popular as ever. Juan-les-Pins has been
inextricably linked to jazz since the 1920s, and has held
10
the annual “Jazz à Juan” festival since 1959. To cement
its status as the jazz capital of the Riviera, the handprints
of more than 50 jazz musicians who have played at the
festival, including B. B. King, Dee Dee Bridgewater and
George Benson, can be found laid into the ceramic tiles
which form the pavement alongside the seaside stage.
Summer on the French Riviera
Some like it haute: There is nowhere else like the French
Riviera. Glamour, style and its legendary history make this
a destination of dreams and an artist’s delight. Despite
its reputation for glitz and glamour, the Riviera boasts an
unmatched cultural richness and vibrancy, inspiring artists
from F. Scott Fitzgerald to Picasso. With the Alps playing
bodyguard against inland winds and the sultry Mediterranean
warming the breezes, the French Riviera is pampered by an
almost tropical climate. Here, Avalon captures the dreamland
of a sun-drenched beach with azure waters heated by the
blazing sunshine, white villas on the edge of the blue horizon
complete the picture of the perfect escape.
La Côte d’Azur - Le Soleil toute l’Année
The art of relaxation: The Côte d’Azur has been synonymous
with chic elegance and lofty living for well over a century.
When English and Russian aristocrats began wintering
on the Côte d’Azur to escape their abominable weather
at home, Nice and its surrounding coastlines became the
vacation destination of the world’s idle rich. When Coco
Chanel popularized the Provençal farmers’ healthy sun tan
12
in the 1920s, parasols went down, hemlines went up, and
sun worshipping was born. Sun-drenched beaches and
warm Mediterranean waters form the backdrop for this
fabled playground of the rich, famous, and glamorous.
The Côte d’Azur seems to epitomize happiness, a state of
being the world pursues with a vengeance.
La Plage de Monte Carlo
J’adore glamour: Prince Rainier’s marriage to Grace Kelly
in 1956 brought Hollywood glamour to his tiny
Mediterranean state and put Monaco on the international
stage. Since then, the principality’s enviable climate, pretty
coastal bays and gambling prospects have made Monaco
world-famous as a tourist hot-spot, as well as a tax haven
for the super-rich. Monte Carlo oozes privilege - famed for
its lavish casino and annual Grand Prix, Le Jet Set continue
to flock to this Mediterranean members-only club, with its
opulent lifestyle, discreet banking facilities, lush fountained
parks and well-policed streets.
Provence - Les Saveurs du Marché
Bien vivre: Partly it’s the fabled sun and light of Provence,
but it is also the culture and the agricultural bounty that
makes the Provençal markets so special. In this Art Decoinspired
rendering, Avalon illustrates the legendary markets
in full flow beside the lavender fields under a perfect sky,
the seasoned vendors displaying an abundance of sun-
14
kissed fruits and colourful vegetables. Depicted amongst
the food and its artful display is a girl carrying a huge array
of fragrant flowers. As well as the colour and quality of the
food presented, Provençal markets are also noted for their
lively theatre, with local farmers quoting prices and bagging
items at a furious pace.
La Côte d’Azur par Avion
Bon voyage!: Airplanes were among the technological
marvels of the early 20th century that made pleasure travel
feasible and luxurious. This newfound freedom to explore the
world sparked a Golden Age of Travel and a new era began
in tourism with the advent of widespread intercontinental
air travel after World War II. As this explosion in pleasure
travel was dawning, another new marvel, the lithographic
poster, came into being - designed to capture one’s attention
and inspire travellers to see the world. Avalon captures this
adventurous mood to perfection in his rendering of a 1930s
passenger plane flying into a beautiful sunset, awakening
dreams of an exquisite getaway.
