deliberately made practical links to classroom and school practices wherever possible,<br />

and draw on my own research experiences and findings within U.S. schools and<br />

elsewhere—along with research conducted by others—to ground the course in<br />

everyday classroom complexities. Within the Department, the conduct of this<br />

foundation course is left to the discretion of the course teacher to develop. Therefore, I<br />

am responsible for designing course content, setting required texts and delivering the<br />

content by means of multimedia resources, classroom-based activities and dilemmas<br />

for students to engage with, relevant articles from local and national newspapers, and<br />

the like. Enrolment was approximately 100 students per class, and informal,<br />

spontaneous student feedback was extremely positive and encouraging, with students<br />

telling me that they both enjoyed the class and learning much about education in the<br />

U.S. Indeed, students from these classes continue to keep in touch and many have<br />

subsequently gone on to careers in education themselves.<br />
