Civil Skills The demand for skilled and work ready employees to take up civil construction roles has never been greater in our region. This is your first step to employment in the sector. Course Content You will develop core skills in the areas of paving, concreting and construction infrastructure. You will also apply health and safety requirements to the civil construction environment and gain the Site Safe Certificate and the Traffic Controller Certificate (TC1). During the course, you will do 200 hours of work experience. Future Opportunities On completion you can enter into the industry as a skilled civil construction worker with one of the many companies seeking employees. Completion also enables you to apply for the National Certificate in Infrastructure Works with optional strands in Earthworks, Pavement Surfacing, Roads, Rural Contracting and Utilities. These courses can be completed while you are employed. Cookery Work alongside professional cookery tutors in a commercial kitchen environment learning what it takes to become a chef. Course Content Our experts help you develop the skills you need to cook routine dishes in a commercial kitchen. We cover general foundation cookery methods and preparation techniques. Learn about diverse workplaces and how to: participate in a team; prepare fruit and vegetables, sandwiches and salads; clean food production areas and equipment; handle knives; food and workplace safety; perform calculations; as well as frying, baking, boiling, poaching, steaming and grilling food. Future Opportunities Aspiring chefs and restaurateurs can enjoy further training with options like the National Certificate in Baking Level 3 or the Diploma in Professional Cookery Level 5. Early Childhood Education & Care* OUTCOME: National Certificate in Early Childhood Education & Care The National Certificate in Early Childhood Education & Care will provide you with a base knowledge in all areas of early childhood education. Course Content Our theory and practice in early childhood education uses Te Whariki - The Early Childhood Curriculum to study development patterns in young children and how to recognise milestones in a child’s development. You will understand the uniqueness of each child and an appreciation and respect for the children you are in a position to influence. Learn about the importance of communication between family, whanau, community and society and the role of other organisations within the early childhood service. You will also be required to complete 80 hours of professional practice in an early childhood environment as part of this course. Future Opportunities You can further your training by completing a National Certificate in ECE Level 5 (centre-based training), a Bachelor of Teaching & Learning (Early Childhood) or NZ Nanny School courses. Electrical Engineering Level 2 Trained by our expert professionals in safe and specialised facilities, you will work in small groups to learn basic skills in electrical practices. Course Content You will focus on the use of electrical diagrams, instruments and mechanics as well as simple mathematics and measurements. We teach you the best way to solder wires and components, how to install flexible cords and the use of safeguards with portable appliances. Part of our course includes work experience and we also teach safe working practices and safety testing, first-aid and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), and basic employment rights and workplace responsibilities. Future Opportunities On successful completion of our course you can move on to the National Certificate in Electrical Engineering Level 3 or take on an apprenticeship completing your studies at night school. Electrical Engineering Level 3 Learn more advanced skills to help start your career in the electrical industry once you have successfully completed the National Certificate in Electrical Engineering Level 2. Course Content Following from your Level 2 studies, our expert professionals will guide you through a course of key electrical practices including: drawing and interpreting electrical diagrams; computer applications for electrical engineers; AC motors, power and power factor theory; earthing, single phase and three phase; and power supplies, cables and accessories. Other aspects include work experience with a reputable company, trade and safety standards, report writing and employee rights and responsibilities. CTC only delivers the off-job component of the National Certificate. To complete the on-job requirements of this qualification you will be required to enter a training agreement with the ETITO. Future Opportunities Once you have completed 80% or more of the National Certificate in Electrical Engineering Level 3 (153 credits) you can move on to the National Certificate in Electrical Engineering Level 4. Furniture & Joinery Expert tutors will introduce you to the tools, materials and processes common to the Furniture and Joinery industries. Course Content During this course you will learn about using hand and power tools and fixed machinery under supervision. You will be able to hand turn wood to produce furniture articles and understand the differences between timber and manufactured boards. Measuring and calculating on freehand, isometric and oblique drawing desks are also developed. Learn how to use adhesives and sealants, mechanical fixings and methods of attachment. Safe practices and documents used to order, receive, handle and store joinery materials are studied, as well as the safe working practices required in joinery workplaces. Completion of this course fulfils the entry requirements for the Certificate in Furniture & Joinery Level 3.
