ABOUT US<br />
The best of school and beyond<br />
The Canterbury Tertiary College (<strong>CTC</strong>) is a partnership<br />
between secondary schools and our regions’ tertiary<br />
education providers. Together we’re offering you<br />
the best of both worlds with the opportunity to<br />
successfully complete your NCEA studies at secondary<br />
school and take your first steps toward gaining a<br />
tertiary qualification. With a diverse range of study<br />
options, you can learn new skills and explore your<br />
future career direction.<br />
You will focus on relevant skills and industry based<br />
training that leads to employment, apprenticeship<br />
opportunities or further tertiary study. The <strong>CTC</strong><br />
partnership also values the social aspects of secondary<br />
school with students still able to enjoy their extra<br />
curricula activities and friendships.<br />
Having access to both school and tertiary support<br />
services also helps make for a smoother transition into<br />
the workplace or adult learning environment.<br />

We are currently accepting applications for courses<br />
that start in February 2013. Some courses have<br />
additional start dates in July 2013.<br />
Start dates are subject to change and courses must<br />
achieve a minimum number of applicants before they<br />

Q How many actual NCEA credits are there?<br />
a This depends on the course that you choose to do.<br />
All credits will go towards your NCEA qualification.<br />
Q Are there any fees?<br />
a There are no fees associated with these courses –<br />
all materials and equipment will be supplied.<br />
Q Is there funding for travel to and from the course?<br />
a Transport funding is decided on a case by case<br />
basis. Each school must advise <strong>CTC</strong> of anticipated<br />
costs for the duration of the course so that funding<br />
can be approved.<br />
Q Will I be in a class with adults or other school students?<br />
a Classes will only have students from Canterbury<br />
secondary schools.<br />
Q Who finds the work experience?<br />
a <strong>CTC</strong> works with you to find a suitable work<br />
experience placement.<br />
Q Are the qualifications internationally recognised?<br />
a Yes, all qualifications are recognised by NZQA on<br />
the National Qualifications Framework.<br />
Q Do I have to go to school every day and<br />
what if I don’t go?<br />
a You need to participate fully in both your<br />
secondary school course and your <strong>CTC</strong> course.<br />
Your attendance is monitored daily.<br />
Q Can I change my days or course option?<br />
a This will depend on when you want to make the<br />
change and if there is space available in the option<br />
you want to move to.<br />
Q Can I go back to school if it doesn’t work out?<br />
a Yes, you can return to school full time.<br />

Applied Engineering: Design & Practice Level 2 OUTCOME: National Certificate<br />
in Electronic<br />
Technology<br />
Working with our experienced professionals you will explore the technical skills<br />
associated with Mechanical (Design & Drawing), Electrical and Electronic Engineering.<br />
Course Content<br />
In our course you will learn the various aspects of Applied Engineering within the<br />
Mechanical and Electrical disciplines. You will develop skills around Electronics Design<br />
and Assembly, as well as Mechanical Engineering Design including Computer Aided<br />
Design using 3D parametric modelling software (Inventor).<br />
Your work will be practical and project based and includes sketching and model<br />
making, both on the computer for virtual models, and in a laboratory/workshop for<br />
physical models. Successful students will obtain the National Certificate in Electronic<br />
Technology Level 2, 40 credits, together with 22 credits in Mechanical (Design and<br />
Drawing).<br />
Future Opportunities<br />
Further study options are the National Certificate in Electronic Technology<br />
Level 3 and New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (NZDE).<br />
Applied Engineering: Design & Practice Level 3<br />
Further develop your skills in Mechanical, Electrical and Electronic Engineering.<br />
Course Content<br />
On completion of this course you will be able to plan and produce Computer Aided<br />
Design (CAD) scale production drawings. You will select and interpret mechanical<br />
engineering drawings, and create and modify three dimensional engineering models.<br />
You will develop technical skills in the construction, operation and performance of<br />
electronic programmable circuits, electronic devices and prototypes. Knowledge of<br />
electronic product development, Analogue to Digital Conversion (ADC) and Digital to<br />
Analogue Conversion (DAC) digital electronic interface devices and logic circuits are<br />
also covered within this course. Successful students will obtain the National Certificate<br />
in Electronics Technology Level 3, 42 credits, together with 18 credits in Mechanical<br />
(Design and Drawing).<br />
Future Opportunities<br />
Depending on the school study chosen, you can progress from this course to the<br />
New Zealand Diploma in Engineering (NZDE) or Bachelor of Engineering Technology.<br />
Discover the key skills and techniques for motor industry careers and work with our<br />
expert automotive and autobody tutors in world class workshops.<br />
Course Content<br />
Learn general aspects of automotive and autobody skills as well as the use and care of<br />
tools. You will also complete 120 hours of work experience with a reputable company.<br />
Our in-depth course helps you to understand motor and machine theories and topics<br />
like useful calculations, safe work practices and communication skills.<br />
Future Opportunities<br />
When you finish this course you will be ready to move on to Level 3 of apprenticeship<br />
based qualifications in whichever automotive area you choose to specialise in. You must<br />

Course Content<br />
Learning activities are practically based and range from core study in the key computer<br />
applications for business administration to communications, customer service and<br />
office skills. Keyboard skill and speed is also further developed.<br />

With this certificate you will be able to apply for office administration assistant, retail<br />
and reception positions or complete further certificates, diplomas and degrees in<br />

Carpentry Level 3<br />
Working in small groups using the latest tools and equipment, our expert tutors will<br />
guide you through core carpentry techniques and theories.<br />
Course Content<br />
Your training will be focused on understanding measurements, calculations, quantities,<br />
materials, carpentry methods as well as the use and care of hand and power tools. You<br />
will also complete 100 hours of workplace learning with a building company.<br />
Future Opportunities<br />
On completion of our course you can either move on to further training with the<br />
Certificate in Carpentry Level 4 or take on an apprenticeship and study at night school.<br />
Carpentry Level 4<br />
Expand your knowledge with our expert carpentry tutors taking your core carpentry<br />
techniques and theories to a more skilled level.<br />
Course Content<br />
Our course focuses on practical projects and carpentry theory. You will become<br />
confident with calculations, quantities, drawing, and improve your communication<br />
skills. Other subjects include the study of tools, machines and timbers plus you<br />
will learn about the construction details for single and two storey homes and light<br />
commercial buildings. You will also complete 100 hours of workplace learning with a<br />
building company.<br />
Future Opportunities<br />
On completion of our course you can move on to further training or take on an<br />
apprenticeship and study at night school. With further study, the construction industry<br />
has opportunities for promotion to jobs like leading hand, foreman, construction<br />
manager, project manager or running your own business as an independent contractor.<br />

Civil Skills<br />
The demand for skilled and work ready employees to take up civil construction roles<br />
has never been greater in our region. This is your first step to employment in the<br />
sector.<br />
Course Content<br />
You will develop core skills in the areas of paving, concreting and construction<br />
infrastructure. You will also apply health and safety requirements to the civil<br />
construction environment and gain the Site Safe Certificate and the Traffic Controller<br />
Certificate (TC1). During the course, you will do 200 hours of work experience.<br />
Future Opportunities<br />
On completion you can enter into the industry as a skilled civil construction worker<br />
with one of the many companies seeking employees.<br />
Completion also enables you to apply for the National Certificate in Infrastructure<br />
Works with optional strands in Earthworks, Pavement Surfacing, Roads, Rural<br />
Contracting and Utilities. These courses can be completed while you are employed.<br />
Cookery<br />
Work alongside professional cookery tutors in a commercial kitchen environment<br />
learning what it takes to become a chef.<br />
Course Content<br />
Our experts help you develop the skills you need to cook routine dishes in a<br />
commercial kitchen. We cover general foundation cookery methods and preparation<br />
techniques.<br />
Learn about diverse workplaces and how to: participate in a team; prepare fruit and<br />
vegetables, sandwiches and salads; clean food production areas and equipment;<br />
handle knives; food and workplace safety; perform calculations; as well as frying,<br />
baking, boiling, poaching, steaming and grilling food.<br />
Future Opportunities<br />
Aspiring chefs and restaurateurs can enjoy further training with options like the<br />

Education & Care<br />
The National Certificate in Early Childhood Education & Care will provide you with a<br />
base knowledge in all areas of early childhood education.<br />
Course Content<br />
Our theory and practice in early childhood education uses Te Whariki - The Early<br />
Childhood Curriculum to study development patterns in young children and how to<br />
recognise milestones in a child’s development. You will understand the uniqueness<br />
of each child and an appreciation and respect for the children you are in a position<br />
to influence. Learn about the importance of communication between family, whanau,<br />
community and society and the role of other organisations within the early childhood<br />
service. You will also be required to complete 80 hours of professional practice in an<br />
early childhood environment as part of this course.<br />

You can further your training by completing a National Certificate in ECE Level 5<br />
(centre-based training), a Bachelor of Teaching & Learning (Early Childhood) or<br />

Electrical Engineering Level 2<br />
Trained by our expert professionals in safe and specialised facilities, you will work in<br />
small groups to learn basic skills in electrical practices.<br />
Course Content<br />
You will focus on the use of electrical diagrams, instruments and mechanics as well<br />
as simple mathematics and measurements. We teach you the best way to solder<br />
wires and components, how to install flexible cords and the use of safeguards with<br />
portable appliances.<br />
Part of our course includes work experience and we also teach safe working practices<br />
and safety testing, first-aid and CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), and basic<br />
employment rights and workplace responsibilities.<br />
Future Opportunities<br />
On successful completion of our course you can move on to the National Certificate<br />
in Electrical Engineering Level 3 or take on an apprenticeship completing your<br />
studies at night school.<br />
Electrical Engineering Level 3<br />
Learn more advanced skills to help start your career in the electrical industry once<br />
you have successfully completed the National Certificate in Electrical Engineering<br />
Level 2.<br />
Course Content<br />
Following from your Level 2 studies, our expert professionals will guide you through<br />
a course of key electrical practices including: drawing and interpreting electrical<br />
diagrams; computer applications for electrical engineers; AC motors, power and<br />
power factor theory; earthing, single phase and three phase; and power supplies,<br />
cables and accessories. Other aspects include work experience with a reputable<br />
company, trade and safety standards, report writing and employee rights and<br />
responsibilities. <strong>CTC</strong> only delivers the off-job component of the National Certificate.<br />
To complete the on-job requirements of this qualification you will be required to<br />
enter a training agreement with the ETITO.<br />
Future Opportunities<br />
Once you have completed 80% or more of the National Certificate in Electrical<br />
Engineering Level 3 (153 credits) you can move on to the National Certificate in<br />
Electrical Engineering Level 4.<br />
Furniture & Joinery<br />
Expert tutors will introduce you to the tools, materials and processes common to<br />
the Furniture and Joinery industries.<br />
Course Content<br />
During this course you will learn about using hand and power tools and fixed<br />
machinery under supervision. You will be able to hand turn wood to produce<br />
furniture articles and understand the differences between timber and manufactured<br />
boards. Measuring and calculating on freehand, isometric and oblique drawing<br />
desks are also developed. Learn how to use adhesives and sealants, mechanical<br />
fixings and methods of attachment. Safe practices and documents used to order,<br />
receive, handle and store joinery materials are studied, as well as the safe working<br />
practices required in joinery workplaces. Completion of this course fulfils the entry<br />
requirements for the Certificate in Furniture & Joinery Level 3.<br />

Course Content<br />

as the most popular products and technologies. Our facilities mirror those of a real<br />
salon and we invite clients in for you to practise your styling skills on. We also cover<br />
salon administration and communication details like managing bookings, looking after<br />

Course Content<br />
In our pre trade course you will learn everything from sketching, calculations and<br />
measurements to maintenance and safe work practice. Key subjects are:<br />
• fitting, turning, toolmaking<br />
• maintenance, fabrication and diagnostics<br />
• machining and precision machining<br />
• use of power tools and welding techniques.<br />
During this year you will also complete 40 hours of work experience.<br />
Future Opportunities<br />
You may choose to continue your studies as an apprentice or take the full time study<br />
option and gain higher qualifications such as: National Certificate in Mechanical<br />
Engineering Level 4 (Part Time) in a training agreement with Competenz; New Zealand<br />
Diploma in Engineering (Full Time).<br />
Plasterboard, Painting & Decorating<br />
Develop a keen eye for detail and all the professional methods you need to<br />
gain employment, apply for an apprenticeship or work as an assistant.<br />
Course Content<br />
The course has been designed to give you all the fundamental skills to gain work as a<br />
plasterer or painter. These include skills in industrial safety, basic scaffolding, surface<br />
preparation and application techniques. Practical skills, training, theory, industry visits,<br />
guest speakers and work experience are involved.<br />
Future Opportunities<br />
If you obtain employment as a painter you can then enrol in the Certificate in Painting<br />
& Decorating Practicum (Part B) Level 3 and receive additional credits towards your<br />
painting apprenticeship.<br />

Course Content<br />
The Drainlaying Introduction Module (RCDL20) has been designed to give you all the<br />
fundamental skills you need to gain employment as an apprentice drainlayer. These<br />
include industrial safety, tools, materials and basic processes and one or a combination<br />
of the following activities: work observation, industry visits, guest speakers or work<br />
experience. Completion of this module will put you in a strong position when applying<br />
for an apprenticeship in the industry and during the course you will do up to 100 hours<br />
of work experience.<br />
Future Opportunities<br />
You can further your training with the next level by completing the Pre Trade Plumbing<br />
Module (RCPG20), apply for an apprenticeship or start work in the Drainlaying, Plumbing<br />
