Activities to date include product assessment and packaging, development of birding tourism marketing materials and a website www.guyanabirding.com, media and PR activities, product familiarization tours, birding and tourism event attendance (e.g., American Birding Association Annual Convention, British Birdwatching Fair, World Travel Market), partnership development with tour operators and media, and coordination of birding guide training. Successes have included: over 35 tour operators now selling or designing new Guyana tour itineraries; numerous newspaper and magazines articles have appeared in North America and Europe; and, 2
Resume of Judy Karwacki grants and other resources valued in excess of $300,000 secured from other partners (CARANA Corp; funded by US Agency for International Development) r Ktunaxa Nation of Canada and North Rupununi District Development Board partnership project for purpose of achieving development results through transfer of Canadian Aboriginal tourism knowledge and skills to indigenous tourism communities and other entities in Guyana. Phase One occurred in 2007, and involved a field trip to in Guyana and community meetings to define training program detailed concept and workplan. In 2008, Phase Two program includes tourism basics training workshops for 32 representatives from 10 North Rupununi Macushi villages, and product development assistance for six villages. (Canadian International Development Agency Indigenous Peoples Partnership Program) r Project to forward sustainable tourism development in Guyana through adoption of the proper planning, management, and promotion of environmental and social good practices. Included two main components: 2-day interactive workshops in four locations based on Conservation International’s A Practical Guide to Good Practice for Tropical Forest Based Tours; and, in collaboration with the project partners and the tourism sector, preparation of a draft code of conduct and good practices checklist for birding tourism in Guyana (British High Commission to Guyana). r Iwokrama International Centre for Rainforest Conservation training program to provide knowledge and skills to Guyana’s leading birding guides so they will be better equipped to provide international caliber birding guide services to the international and domestic tourism markets (IIC-European Union Guyana Micro-Projects Programme project). r One year post hurricane-Ivan tourism rebuilding project. Horticulture, agri-, nature, culture and community tourism product and market assessment; packaging and marketing training; business planning and marketing mentoring; and special interest tour operator familiarization tour planning and implementation for Grenada (CARANA Corp; funded by US Agency for International Development) r Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre, a Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games Shared Legacy project in Whistler, Canada. Six year project (2001 to 2008) includes development and implementation of marketing strategy, from branding to collateral development and acting as project manager for marketing and PR initiatives. In addition, cultural experiences and fundraising coordination assistance.
