<strong>Judy</strong> <strong>Karwacki</strong> is a sustainable tourism consultant, with more than 20 years of industry experience. She<br />
now has an independent practice but has held senior consulting positions with Deloitte & Touche, ARA<br />
<strong>Consulting</strong> and KPMG <strong>Consulting</strong>/Bearing Point. She has also owned a retail travel agency for more than<br />
20 years. Her project portfolio reaches from North America to the <strong>Caribbean</strong>, Central America, South<br />
America and Asia. Among others, <strong>Judy</strong> has worked on projects for USAID, CIDA, OAS, British High<br />
Commission, The International Ecotourism Society and International Institute for Peace through Tourism.<br />
<strong>Judy</strong> is a sustainable niche tourism expert, and has worked throughout the world in the development of<br />
nature/eco-tourism, birding tourism, birding tourism, agri-tourism, horticultural tourism, community<br />
tourism, and culture and heritage tourism. She also specializes in indigenous tourism, and has extensive<br />
experience in this unique market. Her key interest is tourism that provides communities with sustainable<br />
long-term economic, social and cultural benefits while protecting in their natural and cultural heritage.<br />
<strong>Judy</strong> brings strong understanding and experience in working with tourism SMEs and micro-enterprises on<br />
sustainable niche tourism development and marketing. Not only does she own and manage two tourism<br />
micro-enterprises, but the vast majority of her projects have involved working closely with tourism SMEs<br />
and micro-enterprises.<br />
At the moment <strong>Judy</strong> is working on several projects in Guyana, South America. Since January 2006, she<br />
has been the Tourism Director for a multi-faceted USAID-funded project to develop bird watching tourism,<br />
which has recently been expanded to include other nature tourism niche markets and is being extended<br />
for five more years. <strong>Judy</strong>’s other current projects in Guyana are an indigenous tourism development<br />
initiative funded by CIDA, a good practices for ecotourism initiative for the British High Commission, and a<br />
nature tourism product development project for Conservation International. Other recent international<br />
assignments have taken <strong>Judy</strong> to Jamaica, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Barbados, Guatemala and Fiji.<br />
She has also participated in several multi-year projects that spanned most countries in the <strong>Caribbean</strong>.<br />
<strong>Judy</strong>’s expertise includes tourism strategic planning, policy development, value chain analysis, product<br />
development, international market assessment, international marketing and packaging training,<br />
stakeholder consultation; sustainable tourism best practices, and, developing and implementing<br />
strategies for product development and marketing related to partnering with the international niche<br />
tourism travel trade.<br />
<strong>Judy</strong> has excellent English language skills, and basic skills in French and Spanish. She accepts both<br />

r Initiated in January 2006, a three year project to lead development and implementation of Guyana<br />
birding tourism marketing action plan that has been so successful that it is being extended for five<br />
years. Activities to date include product assessment and packaging, development of birding<br />
tourism marketing materials and a website www.guyanabirding.com, media and PR activities,<br />
product familiarization tours, birding and tourism event attendance (e.g., American Birding<br />
Association Annual Convention, British Birdwatching Fair, World Travel Market), partnership<br />
development with tour operators and media, and coordination of birding guide training. Successes<br />
have included: over 35 tour operators now selling or designing new Guyana tour itineraries;<br />
numerous newspaper and magazines articles have appeared in North America and Europe; and,<br />

occurred in 2007, and involved a field trip to in Guyana and community meetings to define training<br />
