President’s Message
Can you believe another year is coming to an end? Welcome to December.
Please join us for our annual New Year’s Eve Party. Tickets are currently on sale
at the Community Centre offi ce. Please call 403-248-1775 to book your tickets and
table. Bring your friends and relatives as we welcome in the year 2013.
Please be conscious of the 72 hour snow route parking ban throughout the winter
months. My understanding is the ban would pertain to the bus route roadways which
would be Madigan Drive and 4th Avenue. Calgarians are expected to move their
vehicles from snow routes immediately after a snow event has been declared. If there
is a chance of heavy snow, the City will issue a “snow event advisory” to warn the
public that snow is expected and snow route parking bans are pending. Calgarians
are urged to be proactive and remove their vehicles from the street in advance of a
parking ban being declared.
In closing, the Board of Directors of Marlborough Park Community
Association would like to wish you and your family’s good health and happiness

Jelly Bean Dance - February 1st
The Marlborough Park Community Association hosts “JELLY
BEAN” dances throughout the year. This is an opportunity for the
younger residents of Marlborough Park and area to come together for
an evening of fun and interaction with others of the same age group.
The dances are restricted to kids aged 6 to 12 years old and are
fully chaperoned by parents who volunteer their time to organize and
oversee the evening. There is a new DJ, canteen facilities and plenty of
fun. The kids get to experience an adventure in a social setting with the
comfort of the parent chaperones watching over the proceedings.
All tickets (only $3.00) must be purchased by a parent and the
parents must provide names and contact numbers. Dances run from
7 to 10pm; parents must pick the kids up, no children are allowed to
exit the building without a parental escort.
These evenings are a lot of fun for the kids, but can only happen
with parental support and volunteers are always appreciated so if this is
something you would like to help out with and your child might enjoy
please stop in to the Community Center office or call 403-248 -1775.
Block Watch Program
Our up coming meeting dates are January 9th and March 13th at
7:00pm in the lounge at the hall.
Drop-in Tai Chi
Drop-in Tai chi is held every Tuesday from 9:15 to 10:15am.
Board Meetings
Marlborough Park Community Association Board Meetings are
held in the community boardroom the second Wednesday of the
month. Everyone is welcome. Next Board Meeting is Dec 12th.
Drop-in Crib
Join us at the hall for adult drop-in crib every Monday night at
7pm. Everyone welcome.
Adult Drop-in Volleyball
Drop in Volleyball is held every Wednesday night from 8:30 to
10:30pm. Join us in the gym at the Marlborough Park Community
Centre for fitness and fun!
Seniors Crib Club
The Friday Seniors Crib Club meets every Friday at 1pm in the
Activity Room, Marlborough Park Community Centre.
There is good payout each week, and special prizes through the year.

Bingos are a major fundraiser for Marlborough Park Community
Association, if you can volunteer with any of these upcoming bingos,

Th e Good Food Box is a program whereby families in need can
purchase fresh fruit and vegetables for a very low cost. In a box you
receive items such as apples, bananas, broccoli, carrots, corn, caulifl
ower etc. Th ere are three box sizes to choose from: 20lb ($20), 30lb
($25), 40lb ($30).

Snow Removal
As a Community Association we endeavor to reach out to all our
seniors, and those with disabilities, whatever their needs might be.
As winter is approaching, we are again planning to provide a SNOW
REMOVAL program.
Th e City of Calgary promotes the SNOW ANGEL program,
which encourages “Neighbours Helping Neighbours”. We believe
this should be the natural thing to do. If you have a neighbour that is
unable to do their sidewalk, be a GOOD NEIGHBOUR, and do it
for them. It only takes a few minutes, and makes it safe for everyone.
It also keeps the Bylaw Offi cer away!
We, as a Community Association, encourage residents to get involved,
what better way than to help a neighbour clear their sidewalk?
Are you a SENIOR needing help? Are you a NEIGHBOUR willing
to help? Are you a STUDENT willing to help, and perhaps
earn some spending money?

Mow/Snow Co-ordinator Needed
Th e Mow/Snow Committee is looking for a co-ordinator to run
the program, as I am stepping aside at the end of the year, after nine
years. I have enjoyed the time , but feel it is time for someone else
to pick up the “shovel”! We could also use a representative from each
community to help promote the program.
If no one replaces me, the program will cease to exist.

LOMA Seniors
Th is group meets to play cards, enjoy the occasional celebration,
and participate in a group meal at one of several favorite restaurants
a few times each year. Th e companionship and long-lasting relationships
that have developed over the years are an important part of
many of the member’s lives. If you are an active senior and would be
interested in joining the LOMA Seniors come out and join them on
any Wednesday afternoon at 1pm, or call Ilene at 403-450-9827 or

3rd Annual Femme Fatale Fair
Shopping Event! Tuesday, March 19th. 5pm-9pm. Admission: $3
Femme Fatale is a unique trade show/shopping event for women
located in the Marlborough Park Community Association. We are always
looking for exciting new product and vendors that are specially
suited to all women. Not only does our show provide you with the
opportunity to enjoy a great shopping experience, but we also off er a
free light snack and our cash bar, with $3.00 drinks, is open during
the event so you can sit down for a drink with friends after you have
shopped till you dropped!
Our 40+ vendors will display a large variety of products from
Health and Beauty, Cooking, to Home Décor and Gifts and everything
in between!
All proceeds from vendor table rentals and admissions will support
our eff orts to build an elevator in the facility for our elderly
and disabled members. So come on down to the Heart of Marlborough
Park for an evening of fun, friends, and, of course, prizes!

started up a monthly social club for adults only in
our on-site lounge! There will be different activities
each month, such as games, karaoke, group dinners,
as well as a cash bar available at each gathering.
This is a great way to get out and meet new
people from your community in a fun and relaxed
atmosphere!
Social Club is free for MPCA members and there
will be a small $3.00 drop-in fee for non-members.
(please note that memberships can be purchased
at the MPCA office for $20 per year) Our next

L.E.A.D is coming to Highland Park!
Develop and practice your leadership skills with us and open doors to
more success in your future. Participants are required to complete a
minimum of 20 hours of practical volunteer experience. Dates and times

Bunbukan Karate: This non-competitive program focusses on
providing practical defensive strategies against habitual acts of violence
within the tradition of old style karate. Two classes are being off ered:
1) A child class for children 6 – 13 years of age. Parent participation
is strongly encouraged and 2) A second class for teens and adults
with higher intensity and complexity. Additional information about

Christmas Lights Tour, Monday, December 17, 2012 - Enjoy a
stress-free tour of the Airdrie “Festival of Lights” Christmas light display
and some of the best decorated homes in Calgary. Join us for the bus
ride to Airdrie, spend 30 to 60 minutes walking through the display
there, then return to Calgary for a bus tour of selected home displays
in the south Calgary.
All this for just $25 per person, including motor coach transportation,
cookies and hot chocolate on the bus, and GST. Not included are dinner,
optional donation at the Airdrie lights ($2-$5 suggested), and optional
tip for the driver. We’ll leave at 6pm from the MPCA hall, 602 22 Ave.
NW and plan to be back by approximately 9pm.

Help stop graffiti vandalism
Graffiti vandalism can take many forms, but it’s essentially words,
figures, letters or drawings that are scribbled,
scratched or sprayed on a surface without the consent
of the property owner. And it’s a serious problem.
It causes property damage, encourages more
graffiti vandalism and other crime, and creates an
often expensive clean-up problem for the property
owner. That’s why the Calgary Police Service and the
City of Calgary Animal & Bylaw Services offer these
tips for dealing with graffiti vandalism:
Record
• If you see graffiti vandalism, record its exact location, colour(s),
type of property, conveyed message, date it was first seen, and identifiable
markings. If possible, take a digital photograph of the vandalism.
This assists in investigations to identify and hold offenders
accountable.
Report
• Report the graffiti vandalism online at www.calgarypolice.ca
(click on “online reporting”), or to the City of Calgary by calling
3-1-1. All reports will be investigated to verify whether the graffiti is
vandalism (illegal) or urban art (with permission).
• If you see graffiti vandalism in progress, call 9-1-1.
• You can also report tips anonymously through Calgary Crime
Stoppers by phone at 403-262-8477 or 1-800-222-8477, or online
at www.ttttips.com (“submit a tip”).
• All photos or questions may be directed to the Graffiti Vandalism
Unit by email to cpsgraffiti@calgarypolice.ca or by calling 403-206-
8324.
Remove
• The City of Calgary requires that graffiti vandalism be removed
within 72 hours. This reduces the chance of more vandalism, sends
a message to offenders that defacing property is not acceptable, and
takes away the recognition that vandals seek.
• Painting over graffiti is often the easiest and most cost-effective
way to remove it. ICI Paints and Cloverdale, in partnership with the
City of Calgary, offer discounts on graffiti/paint remover and paintover
products through the Graffiti Abatement Program. Check the
City of Calgary’s website at www.calgary.ca/animalservices or call
3-1-1 for details on these and other programs
to assist graffiti removal. Be sure to follow all
product safety and use instructions, and wear
rubber gloves.
• Block the graffiti vandalism from view until
it can be cleaned up.

PRESCHOOL NEWS
Ahhh...the holidays are upon us soon. In mid October our
classroom was invaded by Angry Birds! Th e children had fun playing
with Angry Birds plushies.
In November, we had our fi rst Movie and Pajama Day. It was a
treat for everyone including the teachers! We also continued our
Music Box program with Courtney Wright. Th e children really
enjoyed moving and jumping to the music beat. Plus, they’ve learned
new songs!
Th e preschool children will be performing their fi rst play on
December 19th and 20th evenings along with few songs. We are so
proud what they have accomplished in class but once they are on the
stage in front of their families and friends...well, the look of “death”.
Never less, the children will do fabulous!
Th e preschool is closed from December 21, 2012 to January 7,
2013. Classes resume on January 8, 2013. Happy Holidays!

may not have received this issue.
Many, many thanks to all the local area

Association partners and, in particular, the

your communities. Thank you for reaching

As a publisher of community newsletters
I feel I must have the best job in the world!
I have the good fortune of working with the
community volunteers, community liaisons
from the City of Calgary and Calgary Police
Services, area churches and temples, schools
and, of course, area businesses both large
and small. Everywhere I go I meet sincere
and honest people who want to help their
communities thrive. Publishing, like any other
business, has its challenges but the experience
of working with these people makes it all
worth it.
As the year draws to a close it’s natural
to look back and review our successes and
disappointments - smiles and frowns. A
realistic review will help us face the challenges
of the new year.
In the new year I hope to be making some
computer software upgrades that should help
the production flow of the newsletters.
Better response time to potential customers
and community inquires is always on the top
of our list of priorities.
A while back we ran a community photo
contest with got good participation by most
communities. I will be consulting with your
community associations in the new year to
see if we can repeat this contest.
At this time of year I remember to give
thanks for all my blessings and be grateful
that I live in a country full of freedom and
opportunity. I must also remember that
some people in our communities still struggle
to share in these blessing and opportunities.
Please make an effort this holiday season to
be helpful to those who are in need of our
generosity and understanding.
