Comments: Yes, finding myself in haplogroup U6a1 is a huge surprise. All of my
known ancestors are from Scotland, Wales, Ireland, England and a few from
Germany. My yDNa haplogroup is R1b. I know only the name and possible birth
place of my earliest known female ancestor. Her name was Mariah Williams, b.
1835 in Alabama, according to one census - or Kentucky or Tennessee according to
statements of some of her children. She married Hosea White in 1851 in Johnson
Co. Illinois. She died prior to 1892 - no death date on the headstone - and is buried
in Johnson Co. Illinois. She and Hosea White lived in Massac and Johnson Counties,
Illinois. Of their children they had 4 daughters: Nancy, Sarah Albertine, Martha S.
and Mary Isobel. Sarah and Mary married Dunn brothers and their descendants
are known. Sarah had 6 daughters and Mary had 2 daughters. I was told by
FTDNA that U6a1 is an old and rare haplogroup, originating in the Near East
maybe 50,000 years ago. Apparently, most people belonging to that haplogroup are
causasion Berbers living in north western Africa and the Canary Islands - and
maybe Portugal. I have searched the web and did manage to find connections of this
group to the Basque population. Also a very interesting article said that the U6
population might have arrived in Britain prior to the Celts as there are some
language links between the Berbers, Basque and Celts. Still, there is very little
information about U6a1. At Mitosearch I did not match anyone. Since no one can
tell me much I am going to write my own story about a woman thousands of years
ago who travelled from Northern Africa to Iberia and then to Ireland before any
other race was there.

She is the mother of Carrie Crawford Smith who was my great grandmother.
Carrie was a graduate of Fisk University of Nashville Tenn. in 1897. She was sent to
Fisk by Caroline and her husband, I believe his name was John. They were
probably abou 10 years old when slavery ended. They may have been part of the
Crawford family. Carrie married Edward Alexander Smith. Her dauther, Edna
married a man of mixed ancestry. My mother remembers him as a light skinned
man of African descent. Edna was my grandmother. No haplogroup has been
assigned to my DNA results.
Berkeley County, West Virginia. Mary Etta's mother was Mary A. Piper Harper
from Jefferson County (West) Virginia. Mary's mother and my earliest known
maternal ancestor was Susan NEER born about 1800 and married in Jefferson
County to George Piper in 1825. The Neer family were of German origin but some
of the early generations (1700s) had married into the Potts family who were English
Quakers. I was not suprised to be Group H. The HVR2 mutation of 173C is very
rare, I believe.
Comments: The oldest know direct female ancestor of my mother's was Elizabeth
(Betsy) Burke. She was born in VA about 1790 and moved with her family to Cocke
Co. Tennessee about 1800. There is a possibility that several other families made
that move with the Burkes. They could have been the Pharris, Fraser/Frasure and
Mantooth/Monteith/Menteith families. The Fraser/Frasures and
Mantooth/Monteith/Menteith families were suppose to have had a large percentage
of American Indian blood that was acquired in VA. My Y-DNA Haplogroup is E3a
P1+. My male ancestor migrated from Lothringen (Lorraine, FR) where he was
born in 1820 to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1849. This family had absolutely no knowledge
of their African heritage, nor was there ever any indication in there background of
it existing. My DNAprint test showed 93% Indo-European, 7% East Asian, O%
Native American and 0% African. I'll let you figure that out, I can't.
Comments: My earliest known ancestor is Martha Strode, born in France, daughter
of an Englishman who fled England to Holland in 1692, later returning to France
before immigrating to America. She was listed as an orphan on her arrival in
Pennsylvania in 1696-97. She married Morgan Bryan, ca 1719 and they were the
parents of Rebecca Bryan who married Daniel Boone. Martha Strode was the 25th
generation of Strodes who date back to Warin the "Angle-Breton Arbaletrier" who

was a crossbowman in the army of William the Conqueror in 1066. Feel my
Comments: Maternal grandmothers: My Y-DNA haplogroup was found to be R1b,
so both my direct paternal and direct maternal DNA link me to the most common
European haplogroups for each. I subscribe to Rootsweb's GENEALOGY-DNA
mailing list, and have read Bryan Sykes' book "The Seven Daughters of Eve", but
I'm still a relative novice regarding the the various aspects of DNA and its
implications for genealogy. I would welcome any further suggested reading to
enhance my understanding of this interesting field.
Comments: I never knew my mother (Anderson) but pictures of her show her to be
dark and petite. Her mother was said to be dark and said to speak another language
besides English. She may have used the name Williams and was educated although
she was apparrently born in early Wyoming. (Pre 1900.) On the paternal side of of
the women of my family all is in order and confirms German, Prussian. Irish and
English. I should also have a good bit of Swedish, but so far that hasn't shown up. I
would be especially keen to better understand these mutations that to me seem to
indicate Native American possibly from the Rockey Mountain or Great Basin areas.
I can provide an extensive genealogy for the European ancestors that goes back to
the earliest settlement of America.
grandmother's maiden name-Thompson born in West Central Lousiana maternal
great-grandmother's name-????? born in West Central Louisiana or Eastern Texas
of the Caddo Indian Tribe. Additional notes regarding family background. Both my
maternal grandmother and grandfather's families imigrated from England,
Scotland, and Ireland in the late 1700's. The family has lived in North Carolina,
South Carolina, before moving to Eastern Texas and West Central Louisiana. There
is a very strong family background of Caddo Indian on my great grandmother's
family. She attended Caddo annual gatherings around the East Texas, Nagidoches
area as a child. My mother's father last name isAshmore and his mother's name was
Mary Self. Spencer Ashmore's family moved to East Texas from Greenville County
South Carolina sometime betweeb in the 1840-1860's. He was a buggy maker. I have
several male members from the 1700's named Spencer, James, William, and
Lemual. I have been able to trace my grandfather's family back through his
mother's family to Dorset County in England into the early 1600's.
ancestry, which I expected based upon suspected Native American ancestry. Further
evaluation of the data revealed sequences related to the peoples of the SW United
States. As a result, I was not surprised upon discovering that I belong to
Haplogroup B. I have only just begun tracing my maternal ancestry. So far, I am at
Mattie, born in the late 1860s, early 1870s in Alabama. She married a man by the
name of Jack Williams (also from Alabama) and moved to Louisiana where their
children and subsequent generations were born.
Comments: My great great grandmother was Katherine McCarty, and the
McCarty's came from Scotland and Ireland. There is an interesting study completed
by the University of Padua, in Italy, which studied the mtDNA of the Apostle Luke
extracted from 2 teeth provided them from Luke's lead coffin in an ancient Basilica.
The test was conducted to put to rest an old theory that the Holy relic was replaced
centuries ago by a dead Greek soldier. Many articles are found online, one entitled,
"Genetic Characteristics of Evangelist Luke . . ." His mtDNA is exactly the same
Haplogroup and sequence as my own: H 16235 16291. Luke's mother was a 'pagan
slave.'
Comments: The list of things that I don't know about her is much longer longer

than the list of things that I do know. Her first name is Jemima/Gemima. She was
married to Nimrod Shepherd and is listed in the Whitley County, KY Census for
1850-1870. She is supposed to have died in 1876. According to the Census, she was
born in NC anywhere from 1782-1788. I have always been told that her maiden
name was Smith. More recently, some research indicated that she was the sister of
Elizabeth Smith (who married Uriah Shepherd, a likely brother of Nimrod
Shepherd) and a daughter of James Smith and Nancy Mulkey. Nancy Mulkey was
supposed to be of Cherokee descent. This mtDNA test appears to rule out that
theory. Either Jemima was not the daugther of Nancy Mulkey or Nancy Mulkey was
not of Cherokee descent on her mother's side.
Comments: My earliest known direct line maternal ancestor is Anna Maria Barbara
Koger, who according to my records was born about 1701 in Augen, Baden-
Durlach, Germany. She was the first wife of a person who is listed as Adam Miller
in my file, but was most likely Johann Adam Mueller back then. Anna Maria
Barbara (Koger) Miller died in 1794 in Rockingham County, Virginia. Adam and
his wife were the first permanent white settlers in the Shenandoah Valley. They
passed through Pennsylvania on their way to Virginia. I am descended from their
daughter Anna Barbara Miller who married Jacob Baer. According to the
certificate, I am in Haplogroup H which is very prevalent in Europe, which fits with
my knowledge of my ancestry. According to what I have heard elsewhere, my
mutation at 16318T puts me into Haplogroup U7 (though ftDNA didn't indicate this
in my results). Haplogroup U7 is found in the more easterly portion of Eurasia, like
India, Iran, Iraq, and other parts of Asia, which yes, I do indeed find to be quite
surprising as I have no known links to that part of the world. Perhaps this means
that collectively my ancestors were not only some of the earliest immigrants to
America (connections to both Jamestown and the Mayflower), but also some of the
earliest immigrants to Europe from Asia, but this is just a guess... I really haven't
looked into my other mutations very much, so I don't know what surprises they may
hold for me.
Comments: In addition to the MtDNA, I had ethnicity testing, which showed 92%
European and 8% Native American. While I have always suspected some small
ethnic variation in my mother's family, the reality is a surprise. This is an old
Mormon family, most of them arriving in the early 1850's. We have an extensive
genealogy with not a hint of Native American anywhere. The most likely candidate
would be my great-great grandparents, I guess. My g-g grandmother was Margaret
Ross, born in Scotland in 1840, married to Royal James Cutler, born in New York
uin 1828 and of English descent. However, since my MtDNA is This is all so
not something I expected to find in my own family tree--although there have been
weirder results reported.

Typhoid. My grandmother Luella D Walker was born in 1884 in Navarro Co.,
Texas, she died in 1982 in Louisiana. We have no proof but believed the family was
Northern European and mainly Celtic in origin. There were a couple of surprises in
the results of the test, not that I have complete understanding, in that I expected
some NA results. There is no genealogical proof for that expectation only that my
mother and several of her siblings looked like they had Indian ancestry and the
family was always told they were a 1/8th Indian, but perhaps that will be on the
paternal side. The other surprise was the Ashkenazi matches, several in the low
resolution matches and 1 in the high resolution matches. Hopefully someone can
explain those to me. My son also had the Y DNA Print and the results came back

with an estimate of 100 % European.
Comments: Earliest proven maternal ancestor is my great-grandmother, Sarah
Frances (Pierce) Sisk, born 1881, in Alabama, probably in Jackson County; father
James Pierce, born Alabama; mother's maiden name was Tipton, also born
Alabama. Family legend has it that she was part Indian, perhaps Cherokee or
Choctaw. A tri-racial background is also a possibility. A picture of her and her
husband is available at: http://www.daver.info/pix/album1/sisk_cs.htm I was
expecting a haplotype that would have supported a non-Caucasian heritage, so
ending up with J1b1 (plus 16392T) that is most common in Iceland, and is likely
indicative of a deep ancestry in Great Britain was a bit surprising.
Comments: FTDNA and the people who log onto Genealogy-DNA-list have been
unable to even suggest what mtdna haplogroup this person is in. The ethnic origin of
the maternal line is English or possibly German. The paternal Y-DNA indicates a
probable I1b, based on matches in the FTDNA greater database, which is consistent
with a paternal line that goes back to southeastern England in the late 16th-early
17th centuries. Ancestors emigrated to the Boston area in the 1640s. The Ydna was
not a surprise. The mtdna was. We expected H or some other basic western
European haplogroup.
4, 1840-died May 30, 1907. I know her mother's name (Eleanor Smaw) but I don't
know her birth or death dates. I believe the family was from the British Isles. I wish
somebody would explain the meaning of my genetic mutations? Does it specify a
specific geographic location where the change took place. FamilytreeDNA is great
about explaining surname studies, but Oxford Ancestry is better at explaining
mitochodria DNA, but you have to take their tests before they'll explain a lot to you.
I could not find anyone in their free message board that had the same mutations. All
I'm sure of is that I'm a member of the Helen clan, and I had to learn that from
Oxford Ancestry. FamilytreeDNA just gives you a generic migration chart and a
general explanation of mtDNA. So, does anyone know and will anyone out there
explain the meaning of my genetic mutations? Did we all start out as L's and turn
into other haplogroups as we migrated. Help!
Comments: My g-grandmother was a Mantak who immigrated to Pittsburgh in
1881. Many other Mantaks also came to Pgh, but many more went to Cleveland.
The Mantaks are a small ethnic groups that only in recent generations had begun to
call itself "German." They live in far eastern Slovakia, in the town of Metzenseifen
(Medzev in Slovak). There is Niedermetzensiefen (Nizny Medzev)down in the valley
and a village up on the hill called Obermetzenseifen (Visny Medzev). In the past two
centuries, these two locals have vacillated between being two municipalities and one
municipality. Metzenseifen was founded by the Mantaks in the 1300's. Before that,
they were somewhere within a hundred mile radius of the French town of Metz.
They could have been right in Metz, in the Alsace region surronding it, or in the
nearby Pfalz (Palantine - includes cities of Saarbrucken and Trier and
Kaiserslautern) regions of Germany, or in Belgium or Luxembourg or the
Netherlands. The Nantaks founders were a small group of people, but they and their
descendents have been marrying only among themselves from the 1300's till the

1900's. So, it is presumed that all Mantaks are related. The current President of
Slovakia, Rudolf Schuster, is a Mantak. The Mantaks on the average are
entrepeneurial and place high value on education (compared both to their Slovak
neighbors and Germans in Germany). At one time, Cleveland's largest employer
was a Mantak. My maternal line goes like this: Cecelia Anne Clancy (me) b 1956 in
Pittsburgh Pennsylvania USA; Ruth Irene King b 1928 in Pittsburgh; Rose Barbara
Mueller/Miller b 1894 in Pittsburgh d circa 1986 in Pittsburgh; Maria Meder b Feb
2nd or 4th 1860 in Obermetzenseifen and died circa 1936 in Pittsburgh, Anna Maria
Schuster b circa 1829 in Metzenseifen probably Ober- and married to Franciscus
Meder on Oct 21, 1847) b circa 1829 and probably died in Metzenseifen; Elisabeth
Meder. Franciscus Meder's parents were Bartholomew Meder and Maria
Schmotzer both of Metzenseifen. Anna Maria Schuster's parents were Caspar
Schuster and Elizabeth Meder.
Comments: My earliest matrilineal ancestors were: Millie Fuqua Pool (b 1804 in
GA), Nancy Ann Chapman (b c1780 in NC), Millie Fuqua (b c 1755 in NC), possibly
a woman named Prudence (b c 1725 in VA?). The paternal lines for the spouses of
these women mostly went back into VA. Most of these people were of English
ancestry, except for the Fuqua family, which was French. I am collecting haplotypes
of Haplogroup V who have both HVR1 and HVR2 results available. Please e-mail
me if you have such a haplotype. Also, see my Haplogroup V web site, which should
be up by May, 2004.
Comments: This is an update to my entry from 2003. Originally tested by OA, and
had no mutations (CRS). New testing by FTDNA reveals one mutation at 16519C
(which OA doesn't test for). My mtDNA line traces back to Maria Margretta
POTTER (aka Margaret POTTER) b. 1752 of Franklin Co., PA (Cumberland
Comments: My grandmother claimed to be Polish, although in addition to Polish
her German was perfect; she also learned English quickly. Her surname was
something like Skurtowicz. She came to the U.S. around 1910 - 1915. According to
the results, I was surprised to find majority of the "hits" all over Frisia, Germany,
Saxony, Norway, and more. It seems I am more Germanic than Slavic, a lot more. I
am a historian by education and have been searching for my roots for decades, with
little to no success. I'm not certain what the dna results mean (I'm new to this), I
need to give myself a dna education, but I'm quite surprised. I'm very pleased I had
this done, and now that I have a lot of answers, I also have more questions than
ever!
Comments: The oldest known ancestor in my maternal line for whom I have a name
is my gg grandmother Martha Henson, b. 26 Apr 1806 in old Livingston County,
Kentucky. Interestingly, I know where Martha's mother lived, the name of her
husband, when she died, the names her other children, and what her mtDNA had to
have been, but I do not know her name. Other names in my maternal line are Hall,
Nelson, and Yates. European ancestry is no surprise. Haplogroup K restricts things
a bit it would seem, and 16320T refines it even more. I am still looking into this. My
Y-DNA haplogroup is R1b. Also no surprise, but DYS 426 = 13.
Comments: earliest maternal line known so far is Catherine Hamilton,b@1790 in
Greenock area of Scotland, followed by Agnes Young,b1825 in Greenock, Catherine
Broadfoot Love, b1867 also Greenock, Catherine Love Suttie, b 1901 in
Cambuslang, Lanarkshire Scotland, Catherine Love Suttie Smith, b 1920 in
Rutherglen, Lanarkshire, myself Catherine Murray b 1940 also in Rutherglen. My
father's known paternal line is equally prosaic, six generations of William Murray,
to @1803, all born in either Old Monklands, Lanarkshire or in Rutherglen. My
father only had daughters and I only have sons so we have broken our respective
chains in one sense. Most of the other branches in our family, hail from Midlothian,
Scotland, Antrim and 'King's County' in Northern Ireland, Staffordshire &
Worcestershire, England and Rathkeale, Limerick in Eire. Family tradition is that
we have Spanish or Italian forebears but no sign so far! I thought we would be Tara
because of this so maybe my grandmother was right. I certainly feel more at home
in the western reaches of Scotland than anywhere else I have travelled or lived. from

the description of the probable Etruscan environment of Tara, 17K years ago it
sounds just like western Scotland & Ireland are now. Other names in our tree are
Barrowman, Whitson, Breckenridge, Mathieson, Killen, McBride,Stewart,Layton,
Bullock, Marshall, Paterson,Craig, Green,Duncan, Shields, Davidson and Flighty -
all fairly British in origin but I am still looking!
Baltimore MD in the 18th century. My working hypothesis -- subject to rejection if
contradictory data should appear -- is that our "maternal line" immigrant ancestor
was among the Swedish or Finnish settlers of 17th century Delaware (about 60 miles
from Baltimore).
