Afternoon everyone and welcome back to
The Rec for 2013!
We have made progress since the last home
match against Langford, and have notched up useful
away wins at both Watchet Town and Ilminster
Town, which have elavated us to 4 th position.
Having said at the start of the season that
we would like to be in touch with the leaders at the
turn of the year, and to then push on, and lo and
behold that’s exactly where we are.
The hard work starts now if we are to
progress further, but everyone in the squad has
proved that individually and as a team we are
certainly capable, and having now seemed to have
overcome the inconsistencies which had held us
back for the past two seasons, we can look forward
to an exciting New Year.
Newy and I, along with the players, would
really like to thank the travelling supporters who
Companies
helped vocally during our win at Watchet. Our away
support has started to really grow, and if anyone
wishes to travel we are confident we can find seats
for you, particularly with plenty of away games
coming up - it makes all the difference to the
lads..Please contact the chairman if you want to
find out more.
We welcome Street Reserves to the Rec this
afternoon, who have had a momentary blip in what
they will I’m sure be looking upon as a largely
successful first half to the season. In recent weeks
however they have let in quite a few goals, and we
have managed to nudge ahead of them in the table
for the first time this season..
They are sure to be smarting from last
weeks’ 4-0 defeat at Watchet, so we will need to
be on top form to claim all three points today.
Enjoy the game - Robbie and Newy
Good afternoon
to you all as we welcome
Street Reserves to The
Rec for our first home match of 2013.
It was great to see the blues win
the local derby at Watchet on Boxing Day,
when a fiesty game was eventually settled
by a Stefan Phillips penalty 12 minutes from
the end. A large party of 60-70 travelling
Minehead supporters helped swell the gate
to an estimated 180, which was obviously
hampered by a storm starting less than an
hour before kick off. But well done to the
lads for overcoming the pitch, opposition
and dare I say the officials, to win the game
despite having two sent off before half time.
Promotion out of the County
League and into the Toolstation Western
League is a long process whereby any clubs
wishing to go up have to apply to the FA
before 31 st December 2012. Strict ground
grading criteria is involved, which this year
is being completed by the full FA themselves
and NOT by the relevant leagues. We have
a few things to do facilities wise, some
difficult some straight forward, but the most
important issues now lie firmly in the hands
of our landlords Minehead Town Council
and include a long term lease on the ground,
Minehead AFC - (Errea Somerset County Premier League) Page 4
(Rants no longer being allowed)
which still did not go through the “final”
meeting earlier in December and has been
puck back for further discussion in January.
Supporters will be pleased to know that we
have applied to the FA in the hope that our
ground grading can be delayed until nearer
to the 31 st March deadline. Only one team
from each division will be considered for
promotion, which will effectively be the
highest placed club who has applied,
providing they finish within the top five. To
our knowledge, the only other club to apply
this season is Ashton & Backwell United, so
we will need to finish above them to be
considered. Unfortunately we have already
lost to them twice this season, and
therefore no longer have an opportunity to
take points off of them. We also have far
more away games remaining than we do
home, but the way the side has played on
many occasions this season should give us
a fighting chance.
All that remains for me to say is
from everyone at the club, and in particular
the players, is to thank all of you most
sincerely for your support thoughout 2012
and we look forward to a hopefully
prosperous 2013 at Irnham Road.
Let’s get this party started!
The Gerry Hatrick Man of the
Match Trophy, is awarded to the Minehead
player whose performance most catches
the eye at each home match. Adjudicated
by the mysterious Gerry Hatrick (pronounced “geriatric”), the player winning
the accolade on the most occasions will be presented with the prestigious
Gerry Hatrick trophy at the end of the season. The Star Ratings, give a more
detailed insight into each player’s individual form fluctuations throughout the
length of the season, but should be largely taken as a bit of fun.
Saturday 15th December 2012
Though Minehead took the match to their
hosts, a golden chance to elevate themselves fur-
ther up the league table was essentially lost at 5 th
placed Ashton & Backwell on Saturday, when
Minehead’s forwards repeatedly drew blanks.
In another entertaining game in which for
long periods Minehead outplayed their hosts, the
blues should have fired themselves into a two goal
lead in the first ten minutes but firstly, with just 2
minutes on the clock Guy Burns threaded the ball
through to Luke Freeman who beat his defender
but slotted his angled shot from 10 yards out a
foot wide of the far post. Eight minutes later from
a short corner, Mike Mullen floated a perfect cross
over the last defender to Freeman whose first time
side-footed volley from the same position as earlier
again ended up inches wide of the goal frame.
Guy Burns’ trickery was causing the home
defence all sorts of problems and on 18 minutes
after the striker had been felled on the edge of the
box, makeshift defender Lee Smyth smashed the
free kick goalwards, bringing a superb save out of
Gary Clarke in the home goal, who tipped the ball
around the post for a corner.
A good run from Damion Redman resulted
in his cut back cross for Chris Yeates, but the industrious
midfielder’s shot from the edge of the box
went inches wide Next the agile Clarke parried
away Guy Burns’ right food shot for another corner,
but against the run of play a dubiously awarded
free kick on the edge of the box found it’s way
through to Lee Delaney who beat Minehead’s 16
year old keeper Kyran Wilkins from 6 yards out.
The second half started with Minehead
playing up the slope, and again they took the game
to their hosts, and straight after the restart Chris
Yeates met Lee Smyth’s cross but as he proved
during the first half, keeper Gary Clarke was proving
a tough figure to beat. On the hour another
foul on Guy Burns saw a free kick in a dangerous
position curled just over by Lee Smyth.
Minehead were not always having things
completely their own way, and with an incisive
move showing why they seem permanently in the
top quarter of the table the Lee Delaney almost
Minehead AFC - (Errea Somerset County Premier League) Page 7
ASHTON & BACKWELL UNITED (1)1 MINEHEAD (0) 0
doubled his tally but shot wide when well placed.
In another attack the ball travelled across the
blues six yard box with no striker able to deflect
the ball goalwards and shortly afterwards a clever
lob from Delany bounced off the top of the crossbar.
But it was Minehead who did by far the
most pressing and after bringing on Aaron Deeks,
Jack Groves-Furse and Martyn Phillips it looked
increasingly possible that all three points could
still be won. Another free kick from Lee Smyth
went over the bar, and after cutting in from the
left Jack Groves-Furse’s shot from eight yards was
parried away for a corner by Clarke.
Luke Webber then burst passed two defenders
and after his run had taken him to eight
yards out his shot at goal was too weak and
straight at Clarke. Shortly afterwards, with the
blues attack becoming desperate, comments
made to the referee by Webber were strong
enough to earn him a yellow card.
In the closing minutes with Minehead
seemingly camped in the home half, another
breakaway from the hosts resulted in a desperate
challenge from Lee Smyth upending a marauding
striker, earning the defender a yellow card which
was also shown to Martyn Phillips for his over
zealous remonstrating that the challenge was two
yards outside of the penalty area.
The eventual penalty kick, taken by Delaney,
was expertly saved by Wilkins in the Minehead
goal, but there was not enough time to
mount another attack and the points stayed with
the home side.
Minehead’s strike force will be ruing the
chances spurned over the last two highly important
games, in which their play would ordinarily
have been enough to have claimed all six points
and pushed them up into the top three. However
they remain in sixth position and gladly there are
many more points to be played for in the next 20
plus weeks of the season.
Wednesday 26th December 2012
Minehead’s refusal to roll over to Watchet,
even with two players sent off after 40 minutes,
saw them take all three points from this
explosive local derby, with a Stefan Phillips penalty
12 minutes from time separating the two
teams.
Minehead should have taken the lead in
the first minute, when captain Mike Mullen misskicked
from 6 yards out in a crowded goalmouth.
A long throw caused Minehead problems shortly
afterwards but after blocking a few shots the ball
was eventually cleared.
Then Minehead drew first blood, when a
sweeping incisive move from deep in their own
half exposed Watchet. Matt Cracknell found Lee
Smyth who in turn released Luke Webber on the
left flank and his inch perfect cross was buried
expertly by Minehead’s inform goalscorer Guy
Burns, to put the visitors one up with 19 minutes
played.
With tackles getting stronger and more
reckless by the minute the referee lost any control
on the match that he may have initially had
and Watchet got back into the match on 35 minutes.
Minehead captain Mike Mullen was booked
for remonstrating about the referee’s failure to
spot repeated breaches of the laws, and from the
indirect free kick well inside the penalty box, the
ball was passed sideways to Lee Nunn who fired
home strongly from 10 yards, whilst the Minehead
keeper was unable to attempt a save having
been blocked out of the action by a home player.
Minehead’s tempers now regrettably
snapped, and within a few minutes a high challenge
by Chris Yeates which felled two Watchet
players, ignited a 20 man mass brawl on the
touchline in front of the majority of the large
crowd. Fortunately a punch did not appear to be
thrown by either team, though with so much
going on one could easily have been missed.
When sensibility returned some minutes later
both Chris Yeates and Minehead substitute Martyn
Phillips had both been sent off.
Minehead AFC - (Errea Somerset County Premier League) Page 8
WATCHET TOWN (1) 1 MINEHEAD (1)2
Fortunately half time soon came and the
10 minute break seemed to calm things down,
and the second half became a dour struggle with
neither side seeming capable of getting the ball
out onto the wings where the heavy conditions
were less restrictive. Minehead’s defence, in
particular central defenders Mike Mullen and
Paul Smyth stood firm. Tayler Maddock was restricted
to long shots, of varying quality, and Tom
Sparks only broke clear once but the opening
came to nothing.
The final twist of the dice came a few
minutes after Minehead brought on their second
substitute Aaron Deeks, a former Watchet favourite.
Having been put through by a fine Damion
Redman pass, Deeks pushed the ball passed
the keeper, only to be unceremoniously brought
down by Adam Bishop, whose momentum
caused the collision. Being the last player, a red
card was likely, but a yellow was shown allowing
Bishop to remain on the pitch for the penalty
kick. However blues top scorer Stefan Phillips
confidently slotted home to give Minehead their
first victory over the red and blacks since August
2010.
It was hard to tell how many players had
been booked, as the referee only appeared to
show cards twice through the whole of the
match, however to add to the two sent off Minehead
are likely to have had four other players
booked, with Watchet’s players faring somewhat
better. Had a stronger referee been officiating
things may have been quite different. Whilst you
cannot condone players’ tempers, this was a
feisty local derby and it was always going to need
a strong referee.
Minehead moved into the top four with
this workmanlike win
over Ilminster Town on
Saturday, with both
goals and a missed
penalty coming in the
last 12 minutes of the
match.
On a heavy
pitch both sides did
well to play the
amounts of
constructive football
that they did, but it was
Minehead who looked
likeliest to score during a first half
when they created considerably
more goalscoring opportunities.
However much like the match at
Minehead in December, anything
that was on target was dealt with
admirably by Wayne Lewis in the
home goal, including a fine diving
save from a Deeks piledriver.
The first close call for the
Ilminster rearguard was a perfect
corner by Lee Smyth which Matt
Cracknell met at pace but his firm
header went inches over the bar
from 6 yards. Two minutes later
after a flowing move on the left a
through ball found Guy Burns on
Minehead AFC - (Errea Somerset County Premier League) Page 11
ILMINSTER TOWN (0) 0 MINEHEAD (0)2
the right but his left footed effort curled just over
the bar. A stong run
from Deeks who cut in
from the left touchline
saw him beat two
defenders but his crisp
shot from an angle
also went wide.
A four man
move again carved
through the Ilminster
defence but having
beaten a defender
Guy Burns shot wide.
Then another run with
the ball seemingly tied to his
boots enabled Aaron Deeks to
create a shooting opportunity,
but his shot from just inside
the box that was destined for
the top corner was brilliantly
saved at full length by Lewis.
Ten miuntes before the break
Luke Webber beat a defender
and showed another a clean
pair of heels and though his
shot beat Lewis’ dive it too
went the wrong side of the
post with a desperate attempt
by Lee Smyth to divert it inside
the post being a split second
too late.
The second half saw Minehead needing
to defend far more than the first, with play
territorially becoming more even, but the blues
still managed to create serious chances. A Lee
Smyth centre evaded both Mike Mullen and Chris
Yeates by inches at the far post, and a superb
turn by Aaron Deeks inside the box created an
opening for Lee Smyth but his effort also went
just wide.
Making two substitutions in the 70 th
minute Minehead continued to take the game
to their hosts, with strikers Martyn Phillips and
Luke Freeman replacing Guy Burns and Chris
Yeates, and after Matt Crackenll had been hashly
booked for a trip,
the blues finally got
the break through
with 12 minutes
remaining when
Luke Freeman had
been fouled on the
edge of box and Lee
Smyth’s awkward
curling free kick
from an angle
evaded everybody
and crept in at the
far post.
A slick 1-2
between Lee Smyth and Martyn Phillips gave
Minehead AFC - (Errea Somerset County Premier League) Page 12
Smyth another shooting opportunity but again
Lewis was good enough in the Ilminster goal to
push it around
the post for a
corner, then a
hand off by
Jonathan Manley
which felled
Aaron Deeks
resulted in the
defender’s
second yellow
card and a
penalty for the
blues. Top scorer
Stefan Phillips
put his spot kick
wide of the goalframe, but the away side were
now well in control and in the 90 th minute
a powerful close range shot from Deeks
cannoned off Lewis’ body but fell kindly to
Martyn Phillips who finished the scoring
from a few yards out.
CARDIFF WATCH
BRIAN DURBIN
(Bristol Evening Post Saturday 29th October 76)
Brian Durbin is the latest Minehead player
to attract the attention of a league club. Several
have been checking on in form striker Jimmy
Jenkins, but this week Cardiff City made an inquiry
about Durbin after seeing him play against Merthyr.
They were planning to watch him again today in
the FA Trophy game with Bridgwater Town .
The 22 year old midfield player was signed
from Taunton Town at the start of the season for
£1000. He lives in Bristol and was formerly on City’s
books.
“I’m not surprised at Cardiff’s initerest”
said Minehead’s player manager Bob Boyd. “His
distribution is immaculate and he can always be
relied upon to get 10 goals a season from midfield.
Minehead face Geoff Hurst’s formidable
Telford United side on Monday evening in a home
Southern League Premier Division match. Telford
go into top position if they can win at Irnham Road.
I REMEMBER WHEN........
A “Down Memory Lane” feature which will run for the next 2 home
programmes at least, detailing a short part of the club’s history during November
and December 1976 (just over 36 years ago), which I hope will be of interest to
home supporters and of course the players. Having become members of the
Southern League at the start of the 1972-73 season, Minehead made steady progress in their four
seasons in the higher grade, finishing 5th in 1972-73, followed by fourth in 1973-74 and narrowly
missing being promoted in 1974-75 when they finished third. The 1975-76 season proved to be the
most successful season in the club’s history so far when as well as being particularly successful in
the FA Trophy, the blues won the Southern League Merit Cup by scoring the highest number of goals
throughout the three divisions. The icing on the cake was in winning the Championship of the First
Division South, gaining promotion to the highest position outside of the football league, the Southern
League Premier Division.
In between all this excitement, the club had an “above average” FA Cup run, much documented
since. Having knocked out Bridport (away 4-2), Barnstaple Town (away 2-1) and neighbours Taunton
Town (home 2-1) the blues were drawn against fierce cornish rivals Falmouth in the FA Cup 4 th
Qualifying Round.
The feature starts the week before the game at Falmouth’s Bickland Park, November 1976…..
JENKINS TEASES
TELFORD
MINEHEAD 1 TELFORD UNITED 0
Minehead gained their second home
win in the Sourthern League’s Premier Division
when they beat second-placed Telford under
the Irnham Road floodlights on Monday night.
Minehead were always quicker to the ball and
it was not until the final 20 minutes that Telford
were able to produce something like their true
form.
Minehead, nevertheless, deserved
their narrow victory with a goal scored after 18
minutes when Derek Bryant crashed the ball
home from short range as he raced onto a low
cross from Jim Jenkins.
Indeed, Telford never really contained
Jenkins who had another outstanding match
and continued his form of causing havoc to
defences this season. A brilliant one-handed
save from Telford reserve keeper, Mick Bebb,
after seven minutes play also denied Bryant of
another goal. At the other end Minehead’s John
Macey also had a busy evening in goal and
produced two finger tip saves to keep out headers
from Jack Bentley and John Davies.
Too often the quick tackling of
Minehead’s midfield hustled Telford into errors
which took them out of their stride as a side which
seemingly needed more time to play their game.
The number of times that Telford’s Bentley and
World Cup star Geoff Hurst were caught off-side
underlined the home team’s sharper reading of
a fast match.
For Telford Fred Kemp was put through
by Hurst in the first half, but his shot cannoned
off Macey’s body as the home keeper came off
his line. Fifteen minutes from the end Telford’s
second half substitute Ken Draycott missed a
great chance for an equaliser when he ballooned
the ball over the Minehead crossbar with only
Macey to beat.
With this success which took Minehead
into the top half of the Southern League table it
was another good all round performance with the
quick-silver Jenkins again stealing the honours
with his devastating change of pace. Twice in the
final moments he went near to scoring from long
runs.
HOLD ON IN CUP
FALMOUTH TOWN 1 MINEHEAD 1
Minehead must tighten up at the back if
they are to win Monday evening’s replay and
march into the first round proper for the second
time in the club’s history.
Their defence crumbled in the last 25
minutes of Saturday’s tie and only poor finishing
let them off the hook. Until Stuart Brace scored
Falmouth’s spectacular equaliser in the 65th
minute Bob Boyd’s defence was cool and well
Minehead AFC - (Errea Somerset County Premier League) Page 25
Bobby Brown whose goal
opened the scoring in he FA Cup
4th Qual Round tie at Falmouth.
organised and looked capable of holding out
comfortably. Falmouth’s Joe Scott was then
off target with free headers and the same
player shot wide from a defence splitting
through ball from Paul Horrocks. Norman
Ashe and Richard Francis also found their way
through a hitherto solid Minehead rearguard
and suddenly goalkeeper John Macey was a
busy man.
The first half saw the same pattern
only in reverse with Minehead’s Andy Leitch
a tower of strength, causing Falmouth
enormous problems in the air. Jimmy Jenkins
complemented Leitch well on the ground, but
both faded from the game in the second half.
In midfield Bobby Brown, Brian Durbin and
Micky Burns played stylishly in the first half,
but they also surrendered their supremacy
later.
Minehead emphasised their early
supremacy with a goal by captain Bobby
Brown, who headed home a Derek Bryant
cross after 21 minutes. The winners of
Monday’s replay will play Fourth Division
Swansea in the First Round Proper.

The year 2012 ended
on a rather expected
soggy note with a host of
postponements on both Boxing Day and the
following Saturday 29 th December.
Minehead’s 2-1 win at rivals Watchet was
one of the few matches surviving the
weather on Boxing Day. Guy Burns gave the
Blues a 19 th minute lead before former
Minehead defender Lee Nunn drew Watchet
level from 10 yards on 35 minutes. Minehead
sealed victory in an explosive game which
saw both Chris Yeates and substitute Martyn
Philips sent off in the first half, when Stefan
Philips slotted home from the penalty spot
with just twelve minutes remaining.
Bridgwater Town were left counting
the cost of their home Boxing Day postponement
against neighbours Taunton Town.
Bridgwater secretary Roger Palmer said: “It
will cost us thousands of pounds. The game
has now been pencilled in for a midweek in
February but we won’t get anywhere near
the crowd we were expecting. Both sides
have been playing well so there was more
than the usual interest in the game.” This
was the third successive postponement of a
home game at Bridgwater through bad
weather.
Thankfully football resumed on New
Years’ Day following the wet weather that
has played havoc recently. The big Evo-Stik
Southern League Division One South and
West match at Wordsworth Drive between
Taunton Town and Tiverton Town ended
goalless in front of a decent crowd of 390.
Nat Pepperell, on his debut for Taunton
having rejoined from Weston-Super-Mare,
came closest in the opening half-hour,
forcing Chris Wright to race off his line and
Minehead AFC - (Errea Somerset County Premier League) Page 34
save. Former Tiverton striker Carl Cliff-
Brown then came even closer for Taunton
when he beat the offside trap and blasted an
angled drive which the visitors keeper Wright
tipped brilliantly onto the crossbar. Simon
Ingram, Owen Irish, Craig Herrod and
Pepperell all had further chances as Taunton
finished the half in total control. After the
interval Tiverton rallied and had efforts from
Josh Searle and Owen Howe but the match
petered out into a goalless draw. This was
Taunton’s first point and clean sheet at
Wordsworth Drive against their Devon rivals
since October 1998 when Antony Lynch gave
the Peacocks a 1-0 win in front of a bumper
crowd of 1,065. Bridgwater Town continued
their fine recent run by gaining a point in a
1-1 draw at neighbours Clevedon Town. A
crowd of 154 saw Aaron Robins give the
home side the lead on 43 minutes but Tim
Legg equalised for Bridgwater ten minutes
after the interval.
On the first Saturday of the New Year,
action resumed in the Somerset County
Premier League with Berrow strengthening
their grip on top spot with an important 3-1
win at second placed Cutters Friday. This
result saw Berrow open up a significant nine
point gap on their nearest challengers. Third
placed Ashton and Backwell United stayed in
touch with the leaders thanks to a 2-0 victory
at mid-table Nailsea Town. Whilst Minehead
enjoyed a comfortable 2-0 win at Ilminster
Town courtesy of strikes from Lee Smythe
and Martyn Philips, our neighbours Watchet
Town did us a favour by winning 4-0 at home
against high-riding Street Reserves. Goals
from Jamie Milton, Chris Sully, Dominic
Richards and a Tayler Maddock penalty gave
Watchet a boost ahead of today’s clash at
home against league
leaders Berrow. There
was also a surprise
defeat for Nailsea United as they
went down 3-1 at lowly Stockwood Green. All
of this meant that Minehead elevated up to
fourth place just two points behind Ashton
and Backwell United. Shirehampton enjoyed
a goal glut as they thumped struggling visitors
Weston St Johns 7-1. Amazingly Shirehamp-
ton only had a Scott Bamford 25 th minute
strike to show for their efforts before the
interval. The visitors equalised on the hour
through Ben Price but the floodgates opened
shortly afterwards. Kyle Donovan fired in a
hat-trick, together with a further effort from
Bamford and a brace from substitute Rob
Sage completed the rout. However, there
was no joy for bottom club St George Easton
in Gordano after they slipped to a 3-1 defeat
at Bishops Lydeard. Second from bottom club
Clevedon United gained an unexpected but
welcome point in a 3-3 draw at Langford
Rovers 2000. The home side went ahead
after eleven minutes when Levi Marlowe
headed in Ryan Havard’s free-kick. Clevedon
were quick to reply ten minutes later through
a Nick Lee penalty but Langford regained the
lead just before the interval as Aaron
Blakemore headed past keeper Sam
Hemmingsley to make it 2-1. The scoring
continued ten minutes after the break as
Chris Greenslade beat the offside trap to
equalise for Clevedon only for Ryan Havard to
scramble the ball home after 75 minutes to
make it 3-2 to Langford. Havard shortly
afterwards received a yellow card and with
time running out Clevedon snatched a
dramatic point when Lee latched onto a Mark
Harris flick to score.
A West Country Round-Up provided by Tim Rawlings
Last Saturday turned out to be a disappointing
one for our local teams in the Evo-
Stik Southern League Division One South and
West. Fifth placed Tiverton Town picked up
their fourth draw on the trot when they
shared the points in a 1-1 draw with Bishops
Cleeve at Ladysmead. It was substitute Jules
Emati-Emati that put Tiverton ahead after the
break when he let fly with a dipping shot that
eluded Bishops keeper Jimmy Nortei and into
the net. But the visitors did not give up and
were rewarded with an equaliser through
Sam Williams, who with space and time
drilled past the home custodian Chris Wright.
Play-off hopefuls Bridgwater Town suffered a
setback as they slumped to a 3-1 home defeat
against high riding Paulton Rovers. The
visitors struck first when Scott Brice headed
home a Ben Lacey cross after just five
minutes but Bridgwater replied six minutes
later through a Steve Fitzpatrick header.
Paulton continued to control the first-half
and were rewarded when James Billing swept
a low shot into the net on 31 minutes.
Bridgwater were unlucky not to equalise after
Tim Legg struck the underside of the bar, but
Paulton sealed the result with a crisp 25-yard
strike from Dan Cleverley on 73 minutes.
Taunton Town fared little better as they went
down 2-1 at Cinderford Town despite taking a
28 th minute lead through Craig Herrod from
15 yards. The home side fought back with a
41 st minute leveller when a Dale Evans effort
took a wicked deflection to deceive Taunton
keeper Conor Thompson. The points went
Cinderford’s way when Alex Evans headed
home a free-kick after 57 minutes and
Taunton were unable to force an equaliser
even after Matt Barnes was sent-off following
a second yellow card offence.
Minehead Football Club was originally
founded in 1889 and spent their early years in local
competitions. They entered the Western League
at the start of the 1924/25 season, but after
Division 2 had diminished to just 8 clubs returned
to the Somerset Senior League for 1928/29,
remaining in the league until WWII. After the
hostilities the club enjoyed success in firstly the
North Devon Senior League, followed by the East
Devon and Exeter League, returning to the
Western League ranks for the 1949/50 season. The
club turned semi-professional in 1950/51 under
former Exeter City captain Steve Walker, and in
the late fifties became one of the strongest forces
in the league under the guidance of Bristol based
Ron Gingell. Though they remained in the
Western League for 23 seasons, in spite of being
one of the most consistent teams in the league,
Minehead never actually won the Western League
Championship, although they finished as runnersup
twice (in 66/67 and 71/72).
They joined the Southern League in 1972,
finishing 5th in Division One (South). The following
season saw them improve slightly by finishing 4th,
followed by 3rd in 74/75. In the 75/76 season the
club improved yet again to carry off the league title
as champions, plus winning the Southern League
Merit Cup by scoring more goals than any other
club in the competition (all 3 divisions). Andy
Leitch lead the charge with 36 goals, (the highest
tally recorded while Minehead were a Southern
League side), closely followed by Jimmy Jenkins
and Derek Bryant who both managed 30. The next
season, the most successful in it's roller-coaster
history, saw Minehead finish as runners-up to
Wimbledon, as well as reaching the 2nd Round
Proper of the FA Cup for the first time, when they
were beaten 2-1 by Portsmouth at Fratten Park,
Minehead AFC - (Errea Somerset County Premier League) Page 36
MINEHEAD AFC
witnessed by more than 16,000 spectators. At this
stage the club were considered to be amongst the
top 6 non league clubs in the country, reflected by
being invited to represent England in the Non
League Anglo-Italian Cup competition during 1978.
Having won both matches at home, Minehead lost
both return matches in Italy, one of which was
against Udinese. Within a few short years Udinese
had progressed through to the Italian 1st Division,
with their ground being chosen as a venue for the
World Cup finals in 1990.
More history was created the following
season when striker Andy Leitch found his name in
the record books by scoring in 6 consecutive FA
Cup matches, equalling Jeff Astle's record. Leitch
had a scorching header hooked off the line with
the keeper beaten during Minehead's 2nd Round
Proper tie at home to Exeter City, which would
have given him the record outright. Minehead
were beaten 3-0 by the Devon club, a tie which
attracted the club's second highest home
attendance of 3,050.
Though the club were still a cup force to be
reckoned with, their stunning strike partnership of
Leitch, Jenkins and Bryant parted company.
Struggling to score goals they were relegated from
the Southern League Premier Division, finishing
17th of 20, just one point from safety. However
the name had been put firmly on the non league
map. On the occasion of the Southern League's
centenary year (1994) manager Bob Boyd was
chosen as one of the top one hundred managers in
it's history, where his name stands proudly
alongside such names as Malcolm Allison, Ron
Atkinson and Barry Fry.
The 79/80 season saw a restructuring of
the non-league pyramid, with the “creation” of
the Alliance Premier League (now the Conference
League). The Southern
League, losing 13 clubs
in the switch, opted
for a
Midland/Southern
divide. Minehead competed in
the Midland Division, and after leading
the division from January, finally finished as
runners-up to Bridgend. Season 80/81 saw them
finish 12th, however the club were starting to
experience financial problems, and the decision
was made to withdraw from the Southern League
at the end of the 82/83 campaign.
Back in the Western League, the team were
brought back to reality with an 8-0 thrashing at
Frome Town on the opening Saturday of the new
season. Relegated to the First Division in 1989,
the following year saw things get progressively
worse, finishing bottom of the lower league.
With no relegation that season, the blues lived to
fight again, and the following season manager
Andy Hodgson led a locally based team to the
First Division Championship, gaining a record
number of points. Teenage striker Gareth
Morgan scoring 44 times in 40 appearances,
which remains a Western League record for the
club.
Further off the pitch problems soon hit
the club and in the 93/94 season with 6 points
Minehead AFC - (Errea Somerset County Premier League) Page 37
being deducted the side were relegated again,
staying in the First Division until 98/99 when
they won the championship. Their only league
defeat came in the final match, away to
neighbours Ilfracombe, having been presented
with the trophy several games earlier. The high
point of this season again being a lethal strike
partnership, this time between Nick Woon,
Gareth Morgan and Jason Charlesworth. All
three appearing in the Western League’s top six
scorers, with over 30 goals each.
On their arrival back in the Premier
Division finances had dried up, with many of the
successful team moving on. Woon stayed, and
was again amongst the top scorers in the league,
however his goals alone could not prevent the
side finishing bottom, avoiding relegation due to
a restructuring of the league. The club were
relegated the following season however, and
languished near the bottom of the First Division
ever since.
At the end of the 2009-10 season the
club finished ten points adrift at the bottom of the
table, and having flirted with relegation for several
seasons were relegated into the Errea Somerset
County League Premier Division. Robbie Hopkins
remains in charge with Paul Newbold as his
assistant as the club looks to re-establish itself and
to build again for the future.
