SMS Meer ranks as one of the pioneers in the

Maintenance audit at ChTPZ and PNTZ in Russia
SMS Meer customers ChTPZ and PNTZ are part of the ChTPZ Group
based in Russia and operate a seamless tube plant and a large-
diameter pipe plant supplied by SMS Meer. From the beginning of
December 2009 to the end of January 2010 SMS Meer carried out a
maintenance audit in both plants in conjunction with SMS Siemag.
The aim of the project was to highlight potential for improvement in
the existing maintenance processes. In order to be able to advise the
customers on maintenance and repair requirements we compiled a
detailed review of the maintenance processes and the equipment.
The strengths and weaknesses were identified, extensively analysed
and subsequently evaluated. Based on this, recommendations and
concrete proposals were made and documented in a concluding
report. Further measures can now be introduced.

Training for operators of tube plants
Keeping members of staff right up-to-date
We use individual training programmes to pass on our know-how to
plant operators. This includes extensive knowledge of the entire
tube plant and its functions as well as the causes and effects of
faults. Using this knowledge our customers can make full use of
their machinery’s potential in terms of productivity, flexibility and
quality.
As important as it is to bring plant and machinery up-to-date,
employees should also be equipped with the relevant know-how.
We provide individual training to support our customers in achieving
the greatest possible level of efficiency for their machines throughout
SMS Meer is to supply the complete technological line of a new
7“ PQF® plant to the world’s largest tube manufacturer, Tenaris, for
the Tamsa Works in Veracruz, Mexico. Our scope of supply also
includes the training of the operating personnel.

customer that started
in March 2010 while
assembly was still in
progress in the
workshop. Project

“One of the main
focal points of the
training was the assembly of the stands for the stretch-reducing mill.
SMS Meer is to deliver three different types of stand: Fixed stands,
stands with sliding
shaft for quick roll
changing and
adjustable stands for
the precise diameter
setting of the finished
tube. Extreme
precision is necessary
here in the last
forming step. The
Tenaris operating
personnel learned all the tricks for optimum assembly and adjustment
of the stands. That ensures maximum precision and durability of the
bearings and all the moving parts. In this way the technical relationships
can be learned far more clearly and the function can be more
easily understood.”

Individual training for Tenaris Tamsa, Mexico
Operator training for new 7" PQF ® plant
As Tenaris already operates a seamless tube plant built by us at the
same location in Veracruz, they were very keen to see the new
developments that SMS Meer offers today, and were highly
impressed with the high level of development, and at the same time
very satisfied as the new technology in conjunction with the detailed
training will pay off later in practice. Through the training of the
personnel and their understanding of the equipment and process,
the productivity of the plant and the quality of the products can be
improved. The training for the Tenaris personnel will be continued
with the following major focal points:
■ PQF ® technology
■ CARTA ® (Computer Aided Rolling Technology Application)
■ PQF ® hydraulic capsule control
■ QAS (Quality Assurance System)
■ CTP / SRM technology (Cone-type piercer / stretch-reducing mill)
We are convinced that our experts have prepared Tenaris ideally for
the commissioning and further operation of the plant.
2. PQF ® Symposium in Mönchengladbach
During their training, the Tenaris personnel were able to participate
directly in a second highlight on the subject of PQF ® . During the
same period, the 2nd PQF ® Seamless Tube Symposium was
staged at our works in Mönchengladbach, attended by numerous
customers and potential customers from around the world. They
learned about the latest PQF ® technology and were particularly
interested in the demonstration of the “roll stands with sliding
shafts” After completing the training, the Tenaris personnel were
able to present the stands themselves.

Pioneering measuring systems for large-diameter pipe plants
Optimising maintenance and repair work
We always rely on pioneering technologies and processes while focussing on
the needs of our customers. Using a special laser system, measurements can
be taken which allow the precise alignment of the cone-type piercer and roll
stands in the PQF ® plant.
Testing of the measuring device was carried out in close cooperation with our
customers and the Design and Technical Field Service teams. In this way we
were able to create a tailor-made solution for mill alignment, while simplifying
and optimising both the initial commissioning as well as the subsequent maintenance
and repair work at the same time. Measurements on-site can be carried
out flexibly and within extremely short timeframes and are provided immediately
at a precise resolution of 0.001 mm. The measuring results can be
logged and made available for further analysis.

Reduced need for maintenance at The Timken Co.
Modernisation of the run-out side of the rotating sizing mill
In February 2010 The Timken Co. commissioned SMS Meer Service
Inc. to replace the run-out side of the rotating sizing mill in its
seamless tube plant, built in 1976, which manufactures special
tubes for the production of roller bearings in the Gambrinus plant in
Ohio.
What is striking about the new run-out side is the improved tube
guidance system, thereby massively reducing maintenance costs
and labour for Timken. We were even able to fulfil the customer’s
specific desire to continue using the current lower guide shoe,
thereby allowing Timken to further use existing changeover sets.
The original design of the run-out side was based on 1970s’
technology with a purely electromechanical positioning system with
elements which were prone to malfunctioning.
The new design relies on positioning control using hydraulic
cylinders, which can infinitely adjust both the lateral guides
individually as well as the height setting of the run-out rollers. The
modernisation project was successfully completed within 24 weeks.
A particular highlight of the design is the fact that each lateral guide
can be set at a variable distance from the rolling line. Better guidance
is achieved thanks to the smaller clearance.
The modernisation of the run-out side also brings with it further
benefits for Timken: really quiet running of the rotating tube,
extremely easy dimensional adjustment from the control desk and a
considerable reduction in maintenance and repair labour and costs.

Our customer Vyksa Steel Works in Russia
recently received a new expander tool
for its tube welding plant. A particular
challenge was finding the heavy goods
vehicle needed for transporting it over land.
Due to its heavy weight, one HGV has to be
ordered for each of the expander tools. The
dimensions of the supplied tool were as
follows:

The expander is used for the internal
sizing and straightening of longitudinallywelded

What exactly is an expander ?
In addition to the forming process and tube
welding, the mechanical expander has a
decisive influence on the quality of the
tube. The mechanical expander serves to
straighten and size the tubes.
Through gradual cold-forming with an
expanding head inside the tube – with
plastic deformation to between 1.0% and
1.5% taking place here – the tubes are
sized internally and straightened across
their entire length after being finish-welded.
And what is the expander tool
used for ?
The expander tool is the centrepiece of the
mechanical expander and plays its part in
determining the tube diameters and wall
thicknesses which can be machined on the
expander.
Various expander tools are required
depending on the large-diameter pipe
requirements.
