MANAGED: The copy is made by a Managed
Copy Machine to an approved copy protection
– Requires Internet connection to authorize copy from a Managed
Copy Authorization Server (“MCAS”)
– Content owner sets price, number of copies
6

What is Managed Copy? (cont.)
All discs published under the Final Agreement
are obligated to allow a copy, but there are
exceptions
When IP rights are “at issue”
What is Managed Copy? (cont.)
Managed Copy Authorization Server
“MCAS” = Managed Copy Authorization Server
AACS LA will operate a Default MCAS enabling basic Managed
Copy offers, including basic pricing models and the ability to limit the
number of copies
Content owners and other Licensees may launch their own MCAS
that can provide additional functionality
– Requires execution of Online Service Provider Agreement (“OSPA”, available 2010)
On the Managed Copy Sunrise, the actual obligation to offer
Managed Copies commences, and all discs (subject to noted
exceptions) released under Final Agreement (including those produced
prior to Sunrise) must offer a Managed Copy
– Offer information must be populated on relevant server by this date.
Testing will be conducted with Content Participants and Managed
Copy Machine manufacturers prior to launch
Output Technologies Not Specifically
Described on AACS Table C1
Content Owner can construct offers for Output
Technologies not specifically listed on AACS Table C1 and
still satisfy the Managed Copy obligation.
– AACS Table C2 technologies
For technologies specifically registered/approved by AACS LA
– Bound Copy Method
For technologies specifically registered/approved by AACS LA
– CCI-enabled copies
– Blu-ray Digital Copies or other copy offers which meet the
requirements of an “Optional Offer” (defined in Final Agreements)
Content owner must also present full slate of Table C1
offers to the consumer, but then selection by the consumer of
any of these offers will satisfy the MC obligation
12

Serialization/Coupons
If desired, content owner can permit multiple
Managed Copies, and can differentiate between
the first and subsequent Managed Copies in two
ways:
– Serialization of the disc
– Serialized coupons/stickers
Only through serialization (on the disc or via
coupons/stickers) can the first and subsequent
MCs for a particular disk be differentiated.
13

Managed Copy Menuing & Messaging
MCMs will have default ability to contact MCAS to
initiate and process the Managed Copy transaction
No menuing is required on disc, because it can be
implemented at the MCAS
Must present reasonable opportunity to select and
receive Managed Copies even if other offers are
available (e.g., Digital Copy)
The Managed Copy obligations can be met via
optional offers.
– If consumer chooses qualifying optional offer, must inform
consumer the Managed Copy is no longer available
14

Managed Copy Labeling & Promotion
Managed Copy-capable discs must include labeling that clearly
indicates availability of Managed Copy
No negative notice required
Advertising of Managed Copy-capable titles must promote the
availability of Managed Copy as reasonably determined by content
owner
AACS LA anticipates endorsing content industry-developed logo(s)
for use as a “safe harbor” in satisfying labeling obligations
Labeling requirements temporarily deferred until Managed Copy
Server launch and availability of Managed Copy devices on a territoryby-territory
basis
– NOTE: As always, additional or different government
requirements may apply.
15

Device Manufacturer Responsibilities
“MCM” = Managed Copy Machine
– a.k.a “Licensed Copier”
Device manufacturers are not required to provide
MC functionality in their devices
If manufacturer does incorporate MC functionality,
then must follow the AACS specs/rules
Must have appropriate licenses for the authorized
outputs they support
ALL players, regardless of MC functionality, must
incorporate watermark detection
16

AACS Default MCAS Fees
AACS LA has conducted market research for use
in projecting Default MCAS usage
As “cost recovery” organization, AACS LA needs
to ensure Default MCAS contributes to an overall
self-sufficient business
AACS LA is committed to making use of the
Default MCAS affordable and flexible for all
Content Participants & Content Providers (“CPs”)
– Ability to customize offers based on differentiation
between first MC and subsequent MCs
– Ability to offer fee-free MCs
17

Going Forward
Preparation for consumer press PR to be
timed around MC Sunrise
AACS LA looks forward to providing further
updates to the Media-Tech Association
AACS is doing Outreach to other industry
groups/events
The following is a preview of on-line key
order entry that AACS hopes to have
available by year-end
18

AACS On-Line Demo
Screenshots

AACS On-line Demo
Since inception, AACS has made continual improvements in the
order process for keys and certificates
AACS has also made several reductions in fees and streamlined the
fee collection process
In order to further streamline the key order and fulfillment process,
AACS is looking at an on-line key order process
Do not consider this presentation a commitment from AACS to
implement on-line key order entry
Any changes to the AACS key generation process must be done in
a careful manner that maintains:
– Interoperability of discs and devices
– Security of the keys and key generation process
Since this meeting includes many replicators, this topic is being
presented here to solicit your feedback

Key Delivery
Delivery will be by existing processes:
– For AACS content Certificates, delivery will be
by email, with physical delivery optional
– For other AACS key orders, delivery will
normally be on physical media to support
existing manufacturing processes
