Identifying a range of Plants, Weeds,<br />

Pests and Diseases and <strong>the</strong> Care and<br />

Pruning of Plants<br />

Friday 16 November 10.15am to 4pm<br />

Tutor: Ray Broughton<br />

This session will give you an understanding of how plants are<br />

botanically named and will cover <strong>the</strong> identification of a range of<br />

plants, seeds and weeds, plant health, <strong>the</strong> identification of common<br />

pests, diseases, disorders and beneficial animals and insects.<br />

The care and pruning of plants will include potting on your plants<br />

and providing aftercare and understanding pruning principles<br />

including <strong>the</strong> ‘3 Ds’, formative and maintenance pruning.<br />

Skill level: Intermediate (level two) refreshments<br />

Soil testing and management of<br />

green spaces<br />

Thursday 29 November 10.15am to 4pm<br />

Tutor: Ray Broughton<br />

This session will look at collecting and preparing soil samples for<br />

testing, analysing samples, pH testing, adjusting pH, identifying<br />

nutrient deficiencies and taking appropriate remedial action.<br />

Management of green spaces will cover landscaped areas and<br />

ornamental gardens including carrying out site surveys, assessing<br />

<strong>the</strong> management requirements of an area, producing management<br />

and maintenance plans for an area, understanding biosecurity and<br />

monitoring and maintaining health and safety.<br />
