Horticulture:<br />
Putting <strong>the</strong>ory into practice<br />
This set of courses is designed to provide experience of<br />
practical skills associated with <strong>the</strong> RHS level 2 and level 3<br />
qualifications giving concise and up-to-date information.<br />
However, you do not need to be studying for an RHS<br />
qualification in order to attend, <strong>the</strong>y are also ideal for<br />
keen gardeners who wish to develop <strong>the</strong>ir horticultural<br />
knowledge and practical skills on <strong>the</strong> subjects covered.<br />
The courses will cover important horticultural practices<br />
through hands on activities and associated <strong>the</strong>ory.<br />
Guidance will be provided to support those candidates<br />
who are learning and practising new horticultural skills.<br />
The courses involve various practical activities so please<br />
come prepared with suitable clothing, footwear and<br />
gardening gloves.<br />
Soil Testing and Safe Use of<br />
Garden Machinery<br />
Friday 24 Feb 10.15am to 4pm<br />
Tutor: Ray Broughton<br />
Includes collecting and preparing soil samples for testing,<br />
distinguishing between soil textural classes and performing pH<br />
tests. The session will also discuss <strong>the</strong> importance of plant nutrition<br />
and root environments. A look at <strong>the</strong> safe operation of powered<br />
garden machinery will include health and safety considerations,<br />
how to carry out pre-start checks, controlling and adjusting <strong>the</strong><br />
machines and general maintenance.<br />
