Hanging Baskets and Container Gardening<br />

for <strong>the</strong> Summer<br />

Discover how to create a tremendous container display and<br />

transform your patio into an attractive and eye catching space with<br />

visual impact throughout <strong>the</strong> seasons. The session will cover how to<br />

choose <strong>the</strong> right containers, hanging baskets and compost as well<br />

as plants and <strong>the</strong>ir aftercare. An RHS expert will lead <strong>the</strong> workshop<br />

with a presentation followed by a practical demonstration. This<br />

session will involve practical activities, so please come prepared with<br />

suitable footwear, clothing and gardening gloves.<br />

The Rabbit’s Eye View:<br />

A Look at Long Term Plant Performance<br />

Sunday 29 April 10.30am to 4pm<br />

Tutor: Dr Noel Kingsbury<br />

This full-day garden-based workshop by renowned plantsman Noel<br />

Kingsbury aims at encouraging participants to observe garden and<br />

landscape plants, focussing on <strong>the</strong>ir growth through <strong>the</strong> year, looking<br />

at how <strong>the</strong>y compete with each o<strong>the</strong>r, how to assess prospects for<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir longevity and <strong>the</strong>ir suitability for a variety of garden locations.<br />

Gardeners and designers can <strong>the</strong>n use <strong>the</strong>ir experience and<br />

knowledge of plants to plan for <strong>the</strong> maximising of interest and <strong>the</strong><br />

minimising of maintenance at all seasons. Noel aims to get people<br />

thinking about how plants are linked to <strong>the</strong>ir natural habitats and<br />

ecology and how this connects to <strong>the</strong> way we use <strong>the</strong>m in gardens.<br />

The Vegetable Garden in Summer<br />

Wednesday 2 May 10.30am to 4pm<br />

Tutor: Hayley Young<br />

It’s not too late to get some vegetables growing for abundant crops<br />

this autumn and winter. This day will focus on what vegetables<br />

can be grown in summer months and how to sow and plant <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

Harvesting, using and storing crops from spring sowings will<br />

also be covered. A range of practical techniques will be covered<br />

including seed sowing, successional sowing; weed, pest and disease<br />

identification and control techniques. This is a practical day and<br />

attendees will have <strong>the</strong> chance to practise skills <strong>the</strong>y are shown,<br />

so please come prepared with suitable footwear, clothing and<br />

gardening gloves.<br />
