1.7 Key informant interviews analysis<br />

The key informant interviews were analyzed using a <strong>the</strong>me coding method. Common<br />

<strong>the</strong>mes were identified <strong>and</strong> codified under specific <strong>the</strong>mes that were later extracted <strong>and</strong> used<br />

within each research section as direct <strong>and</strong> indirect quotes. Key informants included policy<br />

makers with <strong>the</strong> CRD, store managers <strong>and</strong> food distributors in Victoria, non-governmental<br />

organization <strong>and</strong> community education centres. Interviews were recorded using a tape recorder<br />

<strong>and</strong> later transcribed. Interview transcriptions were analyzed using <strong>the</strong> aforementioned <strong>the</strong>me<br />

coding method <strong>and</strong> sent to each key informant for verification.<br />

1.8 Government document <strong>and</strong> policy analysis<br />

A number <strong>of</strong> government documents <strong>and</strong> policies were referred to <strong>and</strong> referenced through<br />

<strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> research. Every attempt was made to underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> nature <strong>and</strong> contexts <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>se documents in order to avoid misrepresenting or misinterpreting government institutions<br />

<strong>and</strong> policy-makers. Guided by examples from previous studies (McRae 1997, 1999; Lang 1997,<br />

1999), <strong>the</strong>se documents were examined with a mind to objectively report <strong>the</strong>ir policy<br />

implications <strong>and</strong> disseminate <strong>the</strong> facts, not opinions, regarding policy <strong>and</strong> legislation. The<br />

documents were accessed electronically through public government websites.<br />
