Advancing the missionof Hospice 

This report focuses on our dedicated staff and 

volunteers. They are our greatest asset, and we’re truly 

blessed to have them. As leaders guiding Hospice 

into its next chapter, we’re humbled by their trust. 

We also feel great responsibility. Providing end-of-life 

care is a demanding calling. This past year was an 

opportunity to sharpen our focus on the work 

environment. Thanks to your generosity, we reinvested 

resources to expand our clinical staff, assure equitable 

compensation and make needed facility improvements. We’re working hard to assure 

an atmosphere that’s supportive, empowering and team-oriented – where our people 

can not only survive, but thrive. They have responded with great energy and enthusiasm. 

Our next goal is to deepen community partnerships and align ourselves with health 

care providers who appreciate the true value we can bring to their patients. It’s an exciting 

time, and we expect the market will evolve quickly as implementation of the Affordable 

Care Act for health care reform approaches.

Our community is fortunate to have a gem such as Hospice in our 

midst, and we are not the only ones to see its true value. The Center for 

Hospice & Palliative Care recently received the American Hospital 

Association’s prestigious National Circle of Life Award, which honors 

clinical excellence, innovation and ability to work with other organizations 

across the continuum of care. We are very proud of our clinical leadership and all 

of our committed employees. Our region deserves to be proud that Hospice has earned 

national recognition as a center of excellence in palliative and end-of-life care.

Helping youngsters through trying times 

Essential Care for Children 

Serious illness is especially devastating when children 

are involved. That’s why the mission of Essential Care 

is so critical and so valued. Pain and symptom relief are 

just the beginning. Our goal is to keep family life as 

normal as it can be. 

A whole team eases the burden at home. Music therapists 

and child life specialists help worried patients – and their brothers and sisters – 

express what they feel. Social workers handle issues and paperwork. 

Nurses answer calls at all hours, and when routine check-ups 

take place at home, sick kids need fewer trips to the doctor. 

Essential Care is one of few programs in the country 

to offer such comprehensive support. Our allencompassing 

care allows kids to be kids, 

parents to be parents, and families not only 

to function but also to enjoy their time 

together. We hope to expand Essential 

Care since, with limited resources, we 

are able to serve only about half of the 

families in our community who need 

this unique care.

Offering comfort in creative ways 

Expressive Therapies 

A song that comforts, a touch that relaxes, a 

painting that captures … these are a few of the 

unique ways in which the expressive therapies 

provide support. Established in November 

2010, Hospice’s Expressive Therapies Team 

is integral in providing a collaborative presence, 

supporting our clinical mission and its goals for patients and 

families through creative interventions. 

Evidence-based research recognizes the significance and impact of the 

expressive therapies. For patients and families nearing the end of life, 

these therapies offer opportunities to actively process their experience 

and benefit from the services of an interdisciplinary team. 

Our board-certified and licensed clinicians address physical, emotional 

and psychosocial needs through music, art, theater, massage, reiki and 

pet therapies. A unique dynamic develops as patients derive comfort 

from these arts while discovering themselves engaged in creative and 

meaningful outlets. These therapies support their quality of and 

participation in life, enable them to connect in the moment, 

and offer opportunities to share and create an artistic legacy.

lingers on.”

Working together to soothe body and soul 

The Hospice Medical Team 

Hospice Buffalo’s ratio of physicians to patients ranks among the highest in the United 

States. As experts, our doctors use innovative methods not only to treat but also to 

prevent symptoms that cause discomfort – anxiety, confusion, nausea, gastro-intestinal 

problems and insomnia, as well as intractable pain. Our team also includes a 

physician assistant, plus five nurse practitioners who care for Hospice patients 

in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. With cell phones and laptop 

computers, our nurses are available for home care patients at any time 

of the day or night. 

We Honor Veterans 

Because they are often not enrolled in the Department 

of Veterans Affairs, many veterans don’t realize they are 

entitled to benefits that include end-of-life services. Hospice 

Buffalo has joined We Honor Veterans, an awareness and 

action initiative of the VA and the National Hospice & 

Palliative Care Organization. In addition to increasing 

our focus on veterans’ needs, preferences and treatment, 

we are partnering with the VA on outreach efforts and 

staff training. Veterans who have benefited from 

Hospice care are profiled 

on our website. 

Seeking less costly, more comfortable transport for patients, Hospice now 

operates its own “ambulette.” Specially trained aides and EMTs assure sensitive 

treatment and smooth transfers. In 2010, we added pharmacy and durable 

medical equipment services, and also use similar vans for timely, reliable 

delivery of medications and supplies to patient homes.

New West Herr Guest House 

Now when friends and family come from afar to visit a loved one at Hospice, they have a welcoming – and 

free – place to stay. Adjacent to the Mitchell Campus, the West Herr Guest House feels like home with a big 

kitchen, comfortable living room, three bedrooms, two and one-half baths, a 

backyard deck ... even a washer/dryer. Our thanks to the West Herr Automotive 

Group, whose generosity also supports our West Herr Comfort Café. 

Hospice Welcomes Gilda’s Club 

In the fall of 2010, The Center for Hospice & Palliative 

Care welcomed Gilda’s Club Western New York to its 

continuum of programs and services through a new 

corporate partnership. Gilda’s Club WNY offers a 

welcoming environment of free support for everyone 

living with cancer – men, women, teens and children – 

along with their families and friends. Gilda’s innovative 

program is an essential complement to medical care, 

providing networking and support groups, workshops, 

education and social activities.

Mitchell Campus to raise 

funds for holiday gifts and 

food for current Hospice 

patients and their families. 

We established the Family 

Care Fund in 2009 to help 

families in need with such 

basics as food, clothing, 

shelter and utilities. Bake 

sales, cook-outs, basket raffles 

and more brought in more 

than $22,000 in 2010.
