Ruffian 2.0 / Arena 1.0
Handbuch

In
7. ELOstat / Axon Bench: ELOstat von Dr. Frank Schubert ist ein professionelles
Programm für ELO Berechnungen, Auswertungen und Analysen. Als eine Art
PlugIn nutzt Arena die Möglichkeiten von ELOstat. Der Axon Bench ermittelt
anhand einer Schachstellung einen Benchmark. Die Programmierer Vladan
Vuckovic und Prof. Dr. Djordje Vidanovic (Serbien und Montenegro) stellten
dieses nützliche Tool zur Verfügung. Auch der Axon Bench arbeitet unter der
Arena Chess GUI als eine Art PlugIn.
8. Übersetzungen: Arena steht derzeit in 17 Sprachen (Stand: November 2003)
Hilfsbereitschaft bekunden!
Sprachen: Schwedisch, Deutsch, English, Französisch, Italienisch, Spanisch,
Portugiesisch, Katalanisch, Holländisch, Russisch, Tschechisch, Slowakisch, Ungarisch,
12. Tournament options: One can witness a very interesting development on the
Internet. Arena users (or „Gladiators“) can load many different engines and organise
engine vs. engine tournaments. Gladiators can publish their own, private results
either on the Arena web pages or elsewhere on the Internet. The Arena GUI itself
keeps protocol of all events played under the GUI,handles cross-tables either as a
text file or a html file, updating the tournament results with the Sonneborn-Berger /
Buchholz coefficients. You are welcome to organize a tournament and have your PC
run until it is finished or watch the games live. In this particular respect Arena has
not only set standards but has also revolutionized various aspects of engine
research. The tournament options are an essential hallmark of the Arena Chess GUI.
13. Graphical Presentation: You can mould Arena according to your own wishes
and preferences and experiment to your heart's content. Make your own Arena
graphical presentation: change colors, background, board colors, types of chess
pieces,as well as fonts,flags,logos,national anthems,etc.
Among the number of important features let us highlight only a few:
Special board for variants,,constant comprehensive print options
update of the available RAM
and CPU engine usage, information about engine matches, network play, simple position setup,
many analysis options,EPD and PGN loader, percentages obtained by engines, diagrammatic
presentation of games,etc.
We would like you to enjoy our Ruffian 2.0 / Arena 1.0 CD-ROM. We will be trying to develop this
piece of software even further thus trying to fulfill your wishes and suggestions. Thanks to the
Internet and the interaction with our users, during the past two years Arena has turned into a cult of
a sort, mostly due to its permanent change and tendency to reflect users' preferences. On the
other hand, together with Arena and its analysis features,Ruffian will take off and soon reach
celestial computer chess heights.
1) About Ruffian:
Text by Ruffian programmer Per-Ola Valfridsson, English
Ruffian 2.0 is a state of the art chess engine written by Per-Ola Valfridsson. It has been actively
developed since 1998,the
first version (1.0.0) was released in September 2002. Ruffian is
Winboard and UCI compatible and can be used in any interface that supports these two protocols.
Ruffian 2.0 is a much improved engine that is considerably stronger than version 1.0.1 / 1.0.5.
More chess knowledge has been added and many other areas have been enhanced and improved.
Piece mobility has been completely rewritten and the new version has a more active positional
playing style.
The engine is written in portable ANSI C and has been tested on a number of platforms such as
Windows,,,, Mac OSX Linux Solaris Pocket PC and PalmOS.
Ruffian is a fast program that reaches high search depth very quickly, and this gives it excellent
tactical abilities. Extensions, pruning and evaluation have been carefully tuned to maximize
Ruffian's playing strength. Mobility is based on precalculated tables that can recognize special
patterns; this is one of the major evaluation terms. Ruffian has a lot of endgame knowledge and can
play endgames fairly well. With the combination of endgame tables,Ruffian knows when to convert
to a winning endgame.
Search is based on iterative deepening, principal variation search algorithm (PVS),extension,
SEE,transposition tables,recursive null-move and forward pruning.
9. Debug Ausgaben / Log Ausgaben / Fehlersuchfenster: Arena bietet
Arena
protokolliert alles, zeigt Ausgaben systematisch und übersichtlich an. Sich stetig
aktualisierende Turnier-Tabellen mit Sonneborn-Berger / Buchholz Wertung lassen
Sie unfreiwillig mit Ihren favorisierten Programmen mitfiebern. Sie werden
gebannt vor Ihrem PC Nächte verbringen, um Engine-Engine Turnieren LIVE
beizuwohnen.
revolutioniert bisherige Versuche Engines vielseitiger einzusetzen.
zusammengestellt:
Einzigartiges Variantenbrett, umfangreiche Druckoptionen,
Stellungsaufbau, umfangreiche Analyseoptionen, Stellungen spiegeln, Nullzug einfügen,
Analysewaffe.
Ruffian 2.0 / Arena 1.0 Manual
Translated by Prof. Dr. Djordje Vidanovic, English
We congratulate you on buying the Ruffian 2.0 / Arena 1.0 CD-ROM.
With this product you have
purchased one of the strongest computer chess programs in the world. Ruffian's strength on today's
standard fast hardware (Intel Pentium / AMD Athlon 2.6 Ghz) should be around 2700 ELO at
tournament time controls and its excellent play is based on thoughtfully implemented strategic
knowledge, especially intended for deep analysis at long time controls. Such level of play has been
achieved by „only“ a select few, a group of about 20 human players, super GM's, on the current
FIDE rating list.
Arena is a Graphical User Interface (GUI) offered for free on the Internet. Thanks to different users'
help this freeware program has developed into a fast, efficient and friendly chess work-shop and an
almost irreplaceable chess tool. The Arena author, Martin Blume,
(Germany) has managed to perform
a little programming miracle in a comparatively short period of time. Owing to its features, Arena has set
high standards regarding general compatibility with different engine interface protocols and its
predominantly user-friendly profile. People from over 100 countries have helped in making Arena tick
the way it does, by their valuable testing, suggestions and ideas, thus making Arena their main chess
utility, and enabling more than 200 compatible chess engines to run under it. Thanks to the pioneering
work by Tim Mann (U.S.A.), (the creator of the world-famous Xboard and Winboard) we have come to a
point which only three years ago many of our customers could not even dream of.
*** Chess programs have become compatible with one another ***
Ruffian 2.0 by Per-Ola Valfridsson (Sweden) is the strongest Winboard compatible engine in the
world today. The freely available and downloadable version of Ruffian (ver. 1.0.5)
is placed first on the
Winboard Engines Rating List. Its successor, coming more than one year later, with improved features
and much higher playing strength, compared with 1.0.5, is now in your hands. Ruffian 2.0 is not only
capable of holding his own against the strongest commercial chess programs in the world, but also able
to compete successfully against any of them.
·
·
·
·
·
Ruffian 2.0 by Per-Ola Valfridsson
Ruffian is compatible with Winboard Protocols I and II as well as with the UCI
protocol.
On your CD you will find a Linux version of Ruffian. As a suitable GUI for Linux, we
recommend the widely spread Xboard by Tim Mann.
Hint:
the corresponding links pertaining to the Manual are listed in the Appendix.
On the CD-ROM you will also find different opening books for Ruffian. The opening book
author, Prof. Dr. Djordje Vidanovic (Serbia & Montenegro) has developed these books
especially for Ruffian by laboriously testing them to suit
Ruffian's playing style.
Hint:
If you wish to achieve the best possible results for your new Ruffian in longer matches against
other engines, then please set it up as a Winboard engine rather than as a UCI engine. You will then
enable your Ruffian to „learn“ facts about its opening book and to calculate the percentages of wins,
losses and draws internally! Naturally, for your greater comfort and more enhanced features, you may
wish to play with the UCI version of Ruffian, in a more comfortable environment and with more options.
The learning obtained in the Winboard engine games will be preserved and used in the UCI mode.
As a UCI engine Ruffian offers 11 levels of play. Try to improve your chess playing
ability in a gradual way and challenge the program by playing on a higher level from
time to time!
Arena 1.0 by Martin Blume
The Arena GUI has numerous advantages over other similar GUI's. The most important one is its
compatibility with all generally accepted engine protocol standards. Its potential modularity enables it
to host different engines and appears to be almost limitless. You can read about its various features and
functions in the Arena help files in more detail. If you happen to have additional questions our Arena
Support Forum is the great place to ask! Our support and further development of the Arena GUI will
naturally be cost-free!
1. The first advantage is its compatibility with both Winboard protocol I and II.
Thus
you can use over 200 (!!!) freely available chess engines under Arena at the moment
(November 2003). These engines are alphabetically listed on the Arena Support web
pages. Tim Mann's contribution to this quickly developing computer chess area is
inestimable. Therefore, our teamfirmly believes that TimMann deserves the highest
praise for his development of Xboard / Winboard and for making today's
interconnectivity and modularity possible!
2. The second advantage that Arena has over other similar GUI's is perfect support for the
UCI protocol. UCI is yet another freely available method of hosting engines under a
modern graphical user interface such as Arena. One can find about 35 freely
downloadable UCI engines on the Internet today (November 2003). Both protocols are
absolutely compatible with Arena and need no adapters or converters for the engines to
run. This makes the configuration of an engine in Arena a matter of seconds!
3. FRC (Fischer Random Chess): Arena is currently the only existing GUI that supports
the option of Fischer Random Chess. This option has lately recruited many fans
worldwide. At this point there are five freely downloadable engines that have the FRC
options (November 2003).
4. ICS (Internet Chess Server): You can find chess friends from the whole world
on Internet chess servers, chat with them, observe games, current chess events,
and, of course, play chess yourself, or let your favourite engine play against
either humans or other engines.
5. Autoplayer: The autoplayer option by Dr. Chrilly Donninger offers a special
feature to connect two PC's and have different chess programs play against one
another.
6. DGT: The electronic DGT chess board has an elegant design, high quality craft
and is simple to use. You can connect the board to Arena and play a game
against an engine of your choice in conditions you are used to. Allow yourself to
be pulled into the Ruffian magic over the DGT board!
7. ELOstat / Axon Bench: ELOstat by Dr. Frank Schubert is a professional
program for calculating ELO, statistical estimates and score analysis. ELOstat is in
a manner of speaking a special Plug-In for Arena. Axon Bench by Vladan
Vuckovic and Prof. Dr. Djordje Vidanovic measures the chess speed of your
PC and serves as another Plug-In for Arena.
8. Translations: Arena has been translated into 17 languages so far (November
2003) with more to come! This by itself is a good example how help and
suggestions obtained in direct contact with users can enhance a program!
Languages: Swedish, German, English, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese,
Catalan, Dutch, Russian, Czech, Slovakian, Hungarian, Polish, Romanian,
Norwegian and Turkish.
9. Debug output / Debug Window: Arena offers a unique possibility to have
insight into the communication between engines and the GUI. This is important
especially when the user tries to track down an error or a bug; that is exactly
when this feature proves quite handy.
10. Opening books: Under the Arena GUI one can create one's own opening books.
There is Arena's main book that can be used by all engines, but the user may
create, change and edit other books for different engines. Respectively, of course,
the user may test Ruffian playing with books that its programmer uses (opening
books created by Prof. Dr. Djordje Vidanovic).
11. ASA = Arena Security Area: There are constant updates of Arena that can be
found in this area of the Arena Support web pages. Interested users have a
further possibility to log in and download the latest version or patch here.
