of Health & Human Services.
TAPP provides a unique blend of
medical care, social work, counseling and
hands-on education in both parenting
and essential life skills. The program’s
central focus is medical treatment for
expecting mothers and newborn children,
and also the empowerment of those
involved in the program. All services
provided by TAPP are free
to participants, and are
The AFL grant is providing educational
Adolescent Family Life Grant
TAPP Receives $3 Million Federal
Grant to Address Teen Pregnancy
Prevention
funded entirely through grants and individual
donations.
This grant will not only expand
services to allow a broader reach to the
number of teens in need, but it will also
provide funding for research to improve
outcomes of participants. One program
goal is to enhance parent-child connectedness.
Other goals include initiatives
such as decreasing subsequent pregnancy
rates, providing infant immunizations,
increasing completion rates for continued
education and strengthening ties to supportive
family environments.
“We focus on building open, honest
relationships with young people so they
may access services through reliable relationships
with caring adults,” explains
Loral Patchen, CNM, director, TAPP. “It
is a powerful way to address teen ambivalence
about reproduction and sexuality,
while encouraging them to continue their
education, develop core life management
skills and learn to parent their own children
with purpose and direction.” ✹
Center Foundation
Announces
New Partnership
with Southwest
Airlines
Philanthropy Responds
The Dekelboum Family Foundation’s
gift of $1.5 million to renovate and expand
the Medical Oncology/ Hematology Center
at Washington Cancer Institute will add
six new patient exam rooms, resulting
in a total of 15 patient rooms. A larger,
more comfortable patient waiting area
will be constructed and the nursing station
renovated to enable a more efficient
patient registration process. This capital
expansion improvement will allow 30
additional patients to be seen daily and will
also reduce patient waiting times. Once
the project is completed, the facility will
be named The Dekelboum Family Medical
Oncology/Hematology Center.
“The Dekelboum Family Foundation
and its directors are proud this donation
will make such a positive impact on patient
The Dr. John J. Lynch Moral Courage Award
Recognizing the highest standard of clinical ethics
Established in 2009, the Dr. John J. Lynch Moral
Courage Award annually recognizes those who
exemplify the highest standard of medical and
moral ethics. A deep ethical standard is a cornerstone
of any professional in the field of medicine. The Moral
Courage Award exemplifies the highest standard above
and beyond such industry norms.
The award was established in honor of John J. Lynch,
MD, medical director of the Center for Ethics, to recognize
important contributions to the field of clinical ethics.
“We felt a great need to honor the many years in which
Dr. Lynch has championed ethics and personified moral
courage at Washington Hospital Center,” says Nneka
Mokwunwe, PhD, director of the bioethics and spiritual
care departments at Washington Hospital Center.
Dr. Lynch began his long and distinguished career at
the Hospital Center in the summer of 1964. He was a key
figure in establishing Washington Cancer Institute, which
has since become a national leader in cancer research,
treatment and patient care.
This year’s recipients of The Dr. John J. Lynch Moral Courage Award include:
Jimmy Light, MD, FACS, Transplant Surgery; Matthew Schreiber, MD,
Critical Care fellow; Peggy Liggett, RN, CNP. Women’s Services; Joan Nurse,
RN, BSN, OCN, director, 3NE; Yolanda King, MSW, Women’s Services; and
Tasha McKenzie, Graduate Medical Education.
In 1982 he founded the Center for Ethics, the first of
its kind in the country. It was created with the specific
mission: to meet a standard of excellence in the care of our
patients through education, training, consultation, policy
development, and research in clinical bioethics. In 2004,
Dr. Lynch retired from his daily medical practice, but
remained involved as a consultant for the center. Today,
he continues his dedication to the Center for Ethics as
medical director.
The Moral Courage Award carries his namesake
to exemplify his deep dedication to the virtues of a
morally dedicated physician. Representing an expansive
knowledge of ethical standing, living with virtue for
those we serve, and holding the strength to stand for
what is right, should adversity strike, are all the
cornerstones upon which the award is based.
For the first hospital-wide award, peer nominations
were received and evaluated by a committee. Selected
individuals encompass several areas of specialty and professional
focus within the Hospital Center. ✹
Ethics, please contact Kily Battista at 202-877-3269 or
After a
Life-Threatening
Heart Attack,
Jennifer Donelan
is on the Road
to Recovery
Many women see heart
disease as a man’s disease.
However, it is the #1 killer
among women. Causing more than
267,000 deaths each year, it claims
six times as many lives as breast
cancer—a vivid reality for ABC7/
WJLA-TV News Reporter Jennifer
Donelan.
On September 8, just moments
after a live broadcast, Jennifer began
complaining of pressure in her chest,
then numbness in her left arm,
followed by a sudden and sharp
shooting pain. With these symptoms,
taking no chances, Jennifer asked
her colleague to immediately call
9-1-1. Donelan was soon rushed
to the Cardiac Catheterization Lab
at Washington Hospital Center, a
renowned leader in cardiac care and
the busiest heart catheterization
center in the United States.
At the age of 36, her electrocardiogram
(commonly known as an EKG)
verified that Donelan was having a
Ushering in the Next
Generation of Quality Care:
The Center for Excellence in Nursing
Nurses are the front line for quality care, and Washington Hospital
Center is deeply committed to the professional advancement and
fundamental development of our nurses.
In coordination with grants provided by PNC Charitable Trust & The
James M. Johnston Trust, the Center for Excellence in Nursing provides
scholarships, specialized research opportunities, continuing education
and development programs created to advance the professional practice
and leadership of nurses.
The District of Columbia is projected to have a shortage of more than
3,000 practicing nurses by the end of the year. Washington Hospital
Center employs more than 1,600 nurses, and the need for retention and
development of qualified professionals is crucial.
The Hospital Center is grateful to have philanthropic partnerships
that support the critical issue of quality nursing care now and hopefully
in the future. Together, we are working to usher in a new generation of
professionals that will continue the tradition of skilled leadership and
quality care. ✹
Charitable IRA
Rollover Distribution
UPDATE
The tax law signed on December 17, 2010,
entitled “Tax Relief, Unemployment
Insurance Reauthorization, and Job
Creation Act,” has extended the opportunity
for persons 70 and a half years of age and older
to make Charitable IRA Rollover gifts for the
years 2010 and 2011.
The IRA Rollover allows these individuals
to make tax-free charitable transfers from
a traditional IRA or a Roth IRA to qualified
charities such as Washington Hospital Center.
For people required to take minimum withdrawals,
the IRA Rollover can be a great way to
make a significant gift to Washington Hospital
Center and satisfy one’s Minimum Required
Distribution (MRD).
It is important to note that the transfer must
be made directly from a traditional or Roth
IRA—funds that are first withdrawn and then
contributed do not qualify. The administrator
of the IRA plan makes the actual distribution.
The owner of a traditional or Roth IRA
may instruct the trustee of the IRA to distribute
up to $100,000 to Washington Hospital
Center Foundation. This distribution will
occur without the gift amount being included
as taxable income. The transfer does not generate
a charitable deduction, but the amount
will count toward the IRA owner’s mandatory
withdrawal amount.
Persons interested in making a charitable
distribution from an IRA to Washington
Hospital Center should contact their IRA
plan provider. ✹
Rollover or other planned giving options,
At a time when medical physics was in
its infancy, she became fascinated by
the fact that radiation physics could be
used in the treatment of cancer. Today,
she is the chief physicist of the Radiation
Oncology department at Washington
Cancer Institute.
In her role as chief physicist, Rosanna
is responsible for the safe and effective
delivery of therapeutic radiation as prescribed
by the medical team. Given the
scope of oncology services at the Cancer
Institute, this is no small task. Serving
more than 1,000 patients per year, the
Radiation Oncology department at the
Cancer Institute is the highest volume
radiation therapy center in the area.
Outside of the hospital, Rosanna likes
to stay active with fun activities such as
hiking and sculling. She says, “They’re
good exercise, not only for the body but
for the mind as well.”
Why does Rosanna give? “Donating
to the Foundation is a good way to give
back, especially during this economic
downturn when funding is tight. There
are just so many projects in the hospital
which need support.”
Rosanna’s long-standing support
for Washington Hospital Center
Foundation, dating back to 1995, is
deeply appreciated. Such donations play
a key role in helping to support many
of the hospital’s services. In 2010 alone,
more than $400,000 was donated by
associates for a variety of philanthropic
programs.
Donations can be designated to
specific areas that may be of personal
interest, or can be “unrestricted,” where
the donations will go to assist with
the greatest needs in patient care and
“I strongly believe that if we love
our work then we should give it the
needed support to help it grow.”
education at the hospital. When asked
about her relationship with the Hospital
Center Foundation, Rosanna says, “The
Foundation gives me the flexibility
of donating to the department of my
choice. I strongly believe that if we love
our work then we should give it the
needed support to help it grow.” ✹
