RUNNING CLEARANCES
The running clearance between the bearings and the shaft is one of the vital factors which decide oil film thickness
in hydro dynamically lubricated bearings. It is also responsible for building up the lub. oil pressure at the bearings.
Too less an oil clearance will break the oil film and too large a clearance will result in insufficient lub. oil pressure. It
is, therefore very essential to maintain the running clearance within the limits specified by the engine manufacturers.
The running clearance in controlled by the housing diameter, the bearing wall thickness and the shaft diameter. It is,
therefore, very essential to ensure that the bearings housing and the journal diameters are well within the specified
tolerance before assembling the bearings in the engine. The wall thickness of Hibond prefinished bearings is very
critically controlled so as to get the correct running clearance. Housing diameters and shaft diameters for standard
size are shown in this catalogue.
If the clearance recommended by engine manufacturers is not known the suggested clearance shown in the chart
below can be used, particularly when semifinished bearings are to be bored in position. The clearance should not be
less than the minimum shown in the chart. The maximum clearance is not so critical.
