BEARING SIZES & RESIZEABILITY Hibond manufacture bearings in prefinished as well as semifinished (unbored) condition. Prefinished bearings are supplied ready for immediate installation and do not require any further operation before use. But semifinished (unbored) should be bored to the final size after fitment. 1. Half Bearings : Prefinished half bearings are usually supplied in std. size and 0.010”, 0.020”, 0.030”, 0.040”, 0.050”, and 0.060” (0.25 mm, 0.50 mm, 0.75 mm, 1.0 mm, 1.25 mm, and 1.50 mm) undersizes. In certain cases this range is increased upto 0.100” , (2.5 mm) undersize and some intermediate sizes viz. 0.005” &0.015” are added. Half bearings are also available in semifinished i.e. unbored condition and in various sizes such as STD U/B, 040” U/B and 060” U/B. These bearings should be resized in position to the required size upto lowest size specified by line-boring. It is not advisible to resize or scrape white metal bearings of micro variety and overlay plated copper-lead bearings. 2. Bushes : Bushes are supplied in standard size and various undersizes and oversizes, in both prefinished and unbored conditions. Only main bearing bushed are supplied in usual undersizes of .010”, .020” etc. upto 0.150” max. The other bushes are usually supplied in the sizes specified by the original equipment manufacturer. Oversize bushes are supplied to suit the oversize housing i.e. parent bore of size more than the standard size. Worn out parent bores are first reamed or bored to the next oversize specified by the engine manufacturer and appropriate oversize bush is used for assembly. To suit such oversize parent bores outside diameter of STD bush is also increased correspondingly and such bushes are called “Oversize – bushes” (O/S). Unbored bushes can be finished to the final size after fitting into the housing by any one of the machining poperations such as boring, reaming, broaching or burnishing. The normal machining allowances recommended for the above operation are as follows: (Diametrical nominal machine allowances are specified) Boring : 0.012” or 0.30 mm Reaming : 0.006” or 0.15 mm Broaching : 0.010” or 0.25 mm Burnishing : 0.002” or 0.05 mm For Private Circulation :- OE Reference No. And Other Reference No. Are Only For Cross Reference 4
3. Thrust Washers : Thrust Washers are generally supplied in standard size and 0.005” , 0.010”, 0.015”, 0.020” (0.1, 0.25, 0.4, 0.5 mm) oversizes. When the thrust surface of the crankshaft is ground at the time of journal grinding the wall thickness of replacement thrust washers is required to be more than standard size to maintain the correct end float or thrust clearance.In such cases oversize thrust washers are used. These thrust washers can either be used as supplied or can be maintained to any required size upto next lower oversize. 4. Thrust Main Bearings (Flanged) : For the reason explained above, the overall length of the prefinished and semifinished undersize flanged bearings is kept more by providing additional bearing material on the flanges. These bearings are made to the same precise tolerance on length as bearings with standard length. Therefore, bearings plus on length can be used as supplied or can be machined upto next undersize width to obtain the correct end float. In most of the Hibond replacement undersize flanged bearings the overall length is kept oversize in steps of 0.010” (0.25 mm), 0.020” (0.5 mm) and 0.040” (1 mm) than standard size for different undersize ranges.
