Freemasons promoted to the 18 th degree in the Grand Orient are<br />

admitted into the Alliance Israelite Universelle as corresponding<br />

members.<br />

According to the Austrian masonic calendar, Vienna had 13 lodges<br />

in 1916. 12 <strong>of</strong> these had Jewish grand masters.<br />

In 1923, there were 300 000 freemasons in England, among them<br />

43 000 Jews. <strong>The</strong> Shelby lodge had 75% Jews. <strong>The</strong> Hiram lodge<br />

consisted entirely <strong>of</strong> Jews. This was the cause <strong>of</strong> such a scandal that<br />

the grand master, Prince Edward, was forced to break it up.<br />

One <strong>of</strong> the great unknown <strong>of</strong>ficials in the EU is Jacques Attali, who<br />

has been labelled the Lord <strong>of</strong> Europe. He belongs to B'nai B'rith. He<br />

was a moving force behind the French president Francois Mitterrand,<br />

a freemason whose brother, Air Force General Jacques Mitterrand,<br />

grand master <strong>of</strong> the Grand Orient in 1962-63 and 1969-70 (the<br />

masonic magazine Humanisme, No. 235, September 1997, p. 12).<br />

Some freemasons collaborated with the Vichy regime. One <strong>of</strong> these<br />

collaborators was Francois Mitterrand (Josiah E. DuBois Jr, "Generals<br />

in Grey Suits", London, 1953). He was never prosecuted for his col-<br />

laboration with the occupation regime. Mitterrand met with Marshal<br />

Petain in October 1942. It was not known what they talked about.<br />

Until 1986 Mitterrand associated with the chief <strong>of</strong> police under the<br />

Vichy regime, another freemason.<br />

Mitterrand's predecessor, Valery Giscard d'Estaing, was not a maso-<br />

nic brother, when he began his election campaign in 1974, but was<br />

persuaded by party members to join, as he would otherwise not have<br />

stood a chance against Mitterrand. He therefore joined the Grand<br />

Orient lodge Franklin Roosevelt (named after the American masonic<br />

president).<br />

<strong>The</strong> Grand Orient was also behind the campaign directed against<br />

Augusto Pinochet, the military leader <strong>of</strong> Chile, since he had caused<br />

the death <strong>of</strong> the masonic brother Salvador Allende. Allende became a<br />

freemason in 1935, in the lodge Progreso No. 4 in Valparaiso. Before<br />

he was elected president, his grandfather was masonic. <strong>The</strong> Grand<br />

Orient <strong>of</strong> France on 3 November 1998 demanded justice concerning<br />
