When <strong>The</strong>odore Roosevelt visited Italy in the summer <strong>of</strong> 1910, he<br />

was received by the Grande Oriente d'ltalia under great festivities. He<br />

also became a member <strong>of</strong> the lodge Rienzi in Rome. <strong>The</strong> city's mayor<br />

was the Jew Ernesto Nathan, who on two occasions was grand master<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Grande Oriente d'ltalia, according to "Rivista della massoneria<br />

italiana" (1910). Between the years 1917 and 1921 he was grand<br />

master also for the Grand Lodge <strong>of</strong> Italy. Nathan thanked Roosevelt<br />

for his favours to American <strong>freemasonry</strong>. He stressed the close con-<br />

tacts between the Italian masons and the Grand Orient <strong>of</strong> France. In<br />

his reply Roosevelt said that he was most pleased that the mayor <strong>of</strong><br />

the Eternal City these days was a freemason (ibid, p. 109).<br />

At the American military bases immediately after the Second World<br />

War, masonic lodges were opened such as Verona American, George<br />

Washington in Vicenza, Benjamin Franklin in Livorno (Leghorn), and<br />
