Farmers’ Market
Season Starts May 30!
Mother Nature
made us wait
for it this
year, but it’s safe to say
that spring has finally
arrived! And with it, we
prepare for another busy
Southwest Edmonton
Farmers’ Market season!
All over the province,
hardworking Albertans are
busy working the earth,
milling their grains, baking
their breads, putting the
finishing touches on their
pieces of art, and getting
their products ready for
showcase. Each of these
vendors plays a vital role,
not only in building
our wonderful market,
but also in creating a
strong economy! Their
products, over 80% of
which are produced in the
immediate Edmontonarea,
offer the very finest
in produce, meats, baked
goods, handcrafted
jewelry, unique art,
specialty and gift items in
our community.
Shopping at your
local Farmers’ Markets
is an excellent way of
supporting your local
businesses and of doing your part to build a more sustainable local economy. By
choosing to purchase from local farmers and manufacturers, we keep the cycle of
money within our city and communities.
Beyond the economic advantages, farmers’ markets have set a new standard in
food quality. Without having to contend with the long transportation times and
costs associated with grocery store sales, your farmers’ market products are both
fresher and healthier than those you can purchase in the aisles. Moreover, with the
growers being directly on site, customers can interact directly with them to ask
questions about farming practices, pesticides, production, distribution, and quality
control.
Like many other
Edmonton farmers’
markets, the Southwest
Edmonton Farmers’
Market is a not-for-profit
organization, sponsored by
the Terwillegar Riverbend
Advisory Council (TRAC)
and approved by the
Alberta Government’s
Ministry of Agriculture.
We view our market as
being so much more than
a place to shop; it is a
dynamic hub in which
people from all walks of life
come together to celebrate
our local culture. From
watching young buskers
as they learn their craft,
discussing art trends with
local artisans, chatting
about upcoming events
with your local community
league members all while
enjoying a meal at your
favourite concession,
the SWEFM provides
a rare opportunity for
neighbours to come
together and celebrate the
achievements happening
within our own backyard!
Whether you’re there to
pick up your weekly fruits
and vegetables, to stock
up on locally produced fertilizer, to purchase your steaks for an upcoming BBQ,
to pick up a unique gift for mom or dad, or simply to enjoy the entertainment,
the Southwest Edmonton Farmers’ Market has something for everyone! With
something new every week, make sure to come often and watch as this community’s
dream continues to grow!
The Southwest Edmonton Farmers’ Market will be holding its Grand Opening
Event on May 30 at 4:30 pm. The market runs every Wednesday from 4:30 to 7:30
pm until October 3. For more information, please see our website at www.swefm.ca
coyotes Thriving in Our Riverbend/Terwillegar
Neighbourhoods
By: Carol Kaiser, Neighbourhood Watch District Representative, Riverbend and TRAC Security Chair
Since my last article on coyotes,
I have been informed that once
again our neighbourhoods are
being inundated with these unwanted
visitors. With the onset of warmer
weather, coyotes are more visible
when hunting for food and have
more opportunities to eat their prey,
- bunnies, rabbits, squirrels, mice,
and other small animals. Please
refrain from feeding any wild animals
as this disrupts the natural behavior, leading to
dependency on humans for food which is crucial
for their survival. This can potentially cause a
chain of events that may effect others around you,
for example; feeding wild rabbits that frequent
our neighbourhoods entices coyotes to come
closer to our homes to eat their prey, posing a
dangerous risk to both humans and pets. Coyotes
really don’t know the social implications of eating
someones pet, it’s all food to them! This also puts
people at risk when out walking their pets on a
leash, the coyote may stalk them to attack their
pets.
The coyote is the most wide-ranging wild
canine in North America. They can live in many
different areas because they are generalists. Due
to this they are able to change what they eat
and where they live more easily than any other
species. This versatility allows them to move into
our urban areas to benefit from the dense source
of food and lack of predators.
Please be watchful and “NEVER” feed wildlife.
edmonton Police Services Report community
involvement Results in arrest
By: Edmonton Police Services Southwest Division Newsletter District C2, April 5, 2012.
On March 27, police received two calls of a
suspicious man in the Windsor Park area; the
description of the male matched that of the
suspect believed to be involved in a series of
daytime residential break and enters that spanned
multiple southwest Edmonton neighbourhoods.
Residents reported seeing a male acting
suspiciously. Upon police arrival in the area, the
male was located. The alleged suspect was arrested
on outstanding warrants. Further investigations
led to the male being linked to six residential
If you have witnessed a recent interaction
with coyotes that could potentially
endager anyone in your neighbourhood,
please report it to the City by calling 311.
Coyotes have a natural fear of
humans, so attacks are very rare, but
may be provoked when protecting
their food or den. To avoid
human-coyote conflict with these
urbanized animals, follow these steps
imemediately:
•Respond aggressively at the first sight of
coyotes by making yourself appear larger,
waiving your arms over your head.
•Make noise, blow a whistle, or shout in a
deep voice while maintaining eye contact,
to startle coyote away.
•Throw objects (rocks, or sticks) to ward
off animal.
•“NEVER” turn and run, this causes a
natural prey/predator instinct, enticing the
coyote to chase after you!
•Carry dog spray in areas highly frequented
by coyotes.
•Should a coyote continue to approach
you, slowly back away and find refuge in a
building or where there is human activity.
•If you are in danger call Emergency 9-1-1.
RIVERBEND NEWS
Rabbit hill Road Transformation
is Underway
By: Councillor Bryan Anderson
Summer is upon us, road construction season is here, and the City of
Edmonton’s plan to transform Rabbit Hill Road is well underway.
Last year, the two-year project to improve Rabbit Hill Road
between Riverbend Road and Magrath Boulevard started with widening and
resurfacing Riverbend Road to Hodgson Boulevard. This year, the project
will continue from Hodgson to Magrath Boulevard. In addition to widening
the road, rehabilitation of the existing lanes and the 23 Avenue intersection
will also take place.
A wider road will help ease increased traffic volumes and the focus of the
design will take Rabbit Hill Road from two to four lanes. The existing two
lanes will become southbound lanes and the proposed northbound lanes will
be constructed on the east side of the existing lanes.
Construction entails the following:
• Installing new full traffic signals at the intersections of Rabbit Hill
Road and Riverbend Road, MacTaggart Drive/Terwillegar Boulevard
and Oakes Gate/Carter Crest Road was completed in 2011.
• Installing a new bus-pedestrian signal at the intersection of Rabbit
Hill Road and Carter Crest Road was completed in 2011.
• Installing new pedestrian crossing amber flashers at the intersections
of Rabbit Hill Road and south of Ogilvie Boulevard as well as Magrath
Boulevard was completed in 2011.
• Installing new full traffic signals at the intersections of Rabbit Hill
Road and the commercial access north of 23 Avenue as well as South
Terwillegar Drive (south access)/Mullen Road will take place in 2012.
• Installing a new bus-pedestrian signal at the intersection of Rabbit
Hill Road and South Terwillegar Drive (north access)/Mullen Way
will take place in 2012.
• Rebuilding existing traffic signals at the intersections of Rabbit Hill
Road and Terwillegar Drive and 23 Avenue will take place in 2012.
• New sidewalk will be constructed on the east side of Rabbit Hill
Road from Hodgson Boulevard to MacTaggart Drive/Terwillegar response.
Boulevard to continue the new sidewalk that was installed to the
north last year. The existing shared use path on the west side from
Hodgson to Magrath will remain as it is today.
• New street lighting will be installed in the grassed boulevard between
the curb and the sidewalk.
South Edmonton is made up of vibrant communities which continue to
experience significant growth. This road construction project will greatly
benefit the area by improving safety for drivers, passengers, and pedestrians. It
will also allow easier and more convenient access to nearby neighbourhoods,
schools, and businesses. The main project will be completed this fall. 2012
landscaping includes topsoil and seeding and final touches will be completed
in 2013.
Transportation Update
By: Tim Cartmell
The following is an outline of the status of several transportation
projects concerning the Riverbend/Terwillegar area. Most of this
information can also be found at the City of Edmonton website
www.edmonton.ca.
Ramsay Heights Neighbourhood Renewal
Ramsay Heights is scheduled for neighbourhood overlay renewal, which
includes repaving (not complete reconstruction) of roads and repair of
sidewalk panels to eliminate trip hazards. Ramsay Heights is also scheduled
for street lighting replacement, during which existing poles are replaced with
new galvanized poles, concrete pole bases are replaced, underground wiring
is upgraded to meet new electrical codes, and new light fixtures are installed.
Brander Gardens is scheduled for similar work in 2013.
Other Miscellaneous Projects
Other projects that will be undertaken in 2012 include the repaving of
Carter Crest Road; new signal lights at the South Terwillegar Drive / Mullen
Road intersection on Rabbit Hill Road (south access); new pedestrian
lights at the South Terwillegar Drive/Mullen Way intersection on Rabbit
Hill Road (north access); and realignment and reconstruction of Ellerslie
Road and 170 Street.
Project Notice
170 Street Planning Study
2012 Work VEGETATION continues MAINTENANCE on a planning study of 170 Street from Anthony Henday
Drive south to 41 Avenue SW (the south City boundary). The intent is that
Terwillegar Drive will extend south along the present 170 Street alignment
as an urban freeway to accommodate anticipated regional and local long
term traffic demand, with interchanges at Windermere Road, Ellerslie Road,
25 Avenue SW, 41 Avenue SW, and two other development access crossings.
Ultimately 170 Street would connect to a new provincial highway that would
run west of Edmonton International Airport and connect to Highway 2 just
south of the airport. This project remains unfunded and unscheduled.
as quickly as possible.
Vegetation Maintenance
Reminder
A pipeline right-of-way is a strip of land typically 18 metres wide containing one or more buried
pipelines. To ensure safe and reliable pipeline operations and to comply with regulations, KMC maintains
a clearly marked right-of-way, free of trees and tall growing vegetation. These measures help KMC protect
the pipeline, ensure public safety, and provide access for maintenance, inspections, and emergency
A
great big thank
you to Dr.
Robert Agostinis
for an excellent job well
done as TRAC Past-
President! Rob has done
an immense amount of
volunteer work for the
past eighteen years and
has really brought this
community together as
a whole as one of the founders of TRAC. On behalf
of the communities of Riverbend, Terwillegar,
and Greater Windermere and essentially the City
of Edmonton, we thank him for the hard work it
took for him and fellow volunteers to build the
Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre for all
to enjoy!
It is with great pleasure to introduce Sherri
Jaillet-Martinez as our new TRAC President,
Steve Sedgwick as Vice President, Char Bowman
as Secretary, and Barry Davis as Treasurer.
There was a great turnout for the TRAC
Annual General Meeting, which was held on
April 18 at Lillian Osborne High School. We
again thank Janet Hancock (Principal) and Janet
Bell (Curriculum Coordinator, Technology and
Literacy) for allowing us to use the school for our
meetings; a great joint partnership.
Special attention was given to the Community
Spirit Awards issued to:
Harold Hornig: One of the
founding members of TRAC.
Harold was previously an
Ambassador, Secretary, and
helped fundraise for the
TCRC. Harold is currently
the IT guy who communicates
notices and emails to fellow
volunteers.
Joe Yurkovich: Helped with the
TRAC bylaws and incorporating
TRAC. He served as an Ambassador
and Vice President. He is our
current Advocacy Chair and is very
instrumental in our
discussions with all
levels of government.
Tim Cartmell: Was the Design
& Development Chairperson
for the TCRC. He spent many
hours at meetings representing
TRAC for the planning of the rec
centre. He was also the TRAC
Transportation Chair and again spent many
hours representing TRAC for the
projects in our area.
Dave Rumbold: Was the
Fundraising Chair who was
involved with all the fundraising
ventures including the Race
Director for the TRAC 10K for
six years.
All founding individuals
mentioned have put a tremendous amount of
time in helping build our community and the
was issued to Dr.
TRAC Community Adcocate Rob Agostinis for his
abundant knowledge
of, “making things happen,” from
sitting on various boards (EFCL District H
Director, TRSA, Oak Hills Community League),
building parks and planning road ways, bringing
communities together to fundraise for wonderful
projects such as the Terwillegar Community
Recreation Centre, the Edmonton SouthWest
Farmers’ Market (SWEFM), the TRAC 10K
Run’s, bringing Seniors together to establish
the Southwest Seniors Steering Committee and
many more to add to the multitude of projects.
Rob’s vision, advocacy, community engagement
strategies, and communication skills, has
definitely had a hand in, “Making it Happen!”
President’s Report – Sherri Jaillet-Martinez
Sherri welcomed everyone to the meeting.
She announced that Barry Davis, our current
Treasurer, is also the new EFCL – District H
Director.
She introduced Brander Gardens Rocks, which
will be instated as a new program under TRAC
at the June meeting. She also announced the
Edmonton Youth Talent Show, which was held on
April 28, as a possible annual event and program
that will partially fulfill the youth niche. TRAC
is finally establishing their programs: SWEFM,
Seniors, Youth, and the Community Office.
In terms of fundraising, TRAC will be holding
its 7th Annual TRAC 10K event. See the next
page for more information.
There are plans to have a ‘Spring Fling’ event
(silent auction, fashion show, and wine tasting)
next year to raise more funds for all the new
programming.
TRAC is also launching its own signature
WINE! With the help of Vines Wine Merchants
Riverbend, TRAC will obtain wine from a
reputable vineyard complete with a funky
community label. A certain percentage of sales
will go to TRAC and the Terwillegar/Riverbend/
Windermere communities. Stay tuned this fall!
TRAC is still planning for future initiatives
such as an auditorium, flexihall (Phase 2 TCRC)
and setting up a TRAC Foundation.
TRAC made a Bylaw change. The change is the
addition of a SWEFM and Seniors Ambassador
as voting members on the TRAC board. Future
programs will have the same status. Currently,
only Ambassadors have voting status.
Terwillegar Community Recreation Centre
(TCRC)
Mark Dafoe, Supervisor of TCRC is very
happy with how busy the recreation centre was
over the past few months. Memberships are
high and community rooms and flexihalls are
consistently booked. There are still minor issues
to be sorted out and they appreciate your feedback
and suggestions.
A new shorter sign has been built by the inner
road in front of the TCRC. A larger and taller
sign will be built near 23 Avenue.
If you have any concerns or suggestions for the
TCRC, please contact Mark Dafoe, Supervisor,
or send an email to the TRAC President or Vice-
a spring fair!
Terwillegar Riverbend Advisory
Council (TRAC), along with
the Running Room, will be
hosting the 7th Annual TRAC 10K
5K 3K Run/Walk on Sunday, May
27, and it promises to be another
fantastic event.
We are excited this year to have
the event start from a new venue: the
Mother Margaret Mary High School
(not far from Archbishop Joseph
MacNeil Junior High School).
This year we are adding a
southwest mini Farmers’ Market, a
jumpy house and other sponsored
vendor booths. With the usual
setup of tables with food and drinks,
the pre-run/walk warm-up and lots
of door prizes, this event is sure to
make you feel like you have gone to
This years GRAND Door Prize is a third generation iPad from WestWorld
Computers Ltd.
Sponsorship so far has been great and by the time we host the event, we
will have a lot of financial support. See poster.
All proceeds from this years event will go towards TRAC and Community
Leagues of Area H (Riverbend/Terwillegar/Windermere) for programming
and projects.
TRAC will also support ‘Kickstart for Kids’ – a non-profit association
that provides students with multi-faceted health education programs in the
areas of nutrition, self-esteem, hygiene, and physical activity. We are asking
people to bring a non-perishable food item for kids to bring to school as
their lunch or to bring home as one of their meals (ie. juice boxes, cheese
and cracker snacks, cup of soup, granola bars, etc.)
In terms of volunteers, we are asking each community league to send
a dozen or so people to help with the race. Lillian Osborne High School
students (who will earn community credits) and Brander Gardens Rocks
will help volunteer as well. Of course, anybody can volunteer. If you are
interested please give us a call at the contact information below.
Front yards in Bloom
By: Megan Rogers, City of Edmonton, Communities in Bloom Coordinator
The largest program of its kind in Canada,
Front Yards in Bloom asks neighbours to
recognize neighbours for their attractive
front yards. Front Yards in Bloom started in 1999
and received 150 nominations in its first year. Last
year, we got 1500 and this year we need your help
to get 2000. The deadline for nominations is June
30.
There are three yard categories that someone
can nominate. A ‘Front Yard in Bloom’ has an
aesthetic front yard designed with colour and
character. A ‘Natural Front Yard in Bloom’ is a
yard with a “natural” aesthetic, using native plants,
and limited pesticides and herbicides. An ‘Edible Front Yard in Bloom’ is
a yard incorporating edible fruits and plants into the landscape design.
After the deadline, volunteers will deliver a sign and certificate to
each nominated yard. Volunteers will also choose some top yards for
recognition. The top Natural Front Yard is selected by the Edmonton
Naturalization Group and the top Edible Front Yard is selected by
Sustainable Food Edmonton. Results will be announced during the
Edmonton in Bloom Awards on August 9 at City Hall. Everyone is
invited!
It’s easy to nominate! Anyone can submit a nomination (no selfnominations,
please.) Nominations must be for a front yard or a yard
visible by everyone.
Submit nominations:
• Online: www.frontyardsinbloom.ca
• E-mail: front.yards@edmonton.ca
• Phone: 311
• Fax: 780-423-2883, Attention: Front Yards in Bloom
‘Keep it Light’ on Garbage Day
Heavy Bags Unsafe for You and Your Collector By: City of Edmonton
Many of us complain about taking out the garbage, but imagine
doing it 600 times in one day.
For City garbage and recycling collectors, it’s all part of
a day’s job. They pick up between 7,000 to 11,000 kilograms of waste
every day – about the weight of 10 sub compact cars.
To give collectors and yourself a break, the City of Edmonton is
encouraging you to ‘Keep It Light’ when you bag your garbage.
A good rule of thumb is that if you find it difficult to pick up, or have
to drag it to the curb, it’s probably too heavy.
City bylaw states your garbage bag or can must weigh less than 20
kilograms (44 pounds) or collectors will not pick it up. Garbage cans
must be less than 100 litres in size, with fixed handles, no wheels and a
tight-fitting, removable lid.
This one easy step can help your collectors do their job better and
prevent you and your collector from injury.
Partnership. Planning. Patience.
Three Steps for Maximizing Investment Performance By: Greg Mailo
There is nothing particularly difficult about building an investment
portfolio. But making that portfolio pay off is another story. There
are some key fundamentals to investment success: partnership,
planning and patience.
Partnership is about getting professional advice. Planning is about the
establishment of goals. Patience is about thinking long-term. Making
all three work together successfully is the key to consistent investment
success.
A good place to start is partnership, and that means getting some
professional advice. A reliable investment advisor, working in partnership
with you, can bring great value to both the basic construction and
subsequent performance of your portfolio. That professional partnership
can help you figure out the distribution of your assets, ensure proper
diversification and help you monitor performance.
Planning is next. Identifying goals. Factoring in your income level,
now and in the future. Taking account of lifestyle issues. Considering
how much money you have to invest and how frequently you are prepared
to invest it. The key is to think long and hard about your needs before
you just jump-in and buy an individual or group of investments, whether
they are stocks, bonds, mutual funds, GICs (Guaranteed Investment
Certificates) or another type of investment.
For example, it’s vital that your investment strategy matches your
personal situation. Equity and growth holdings are best suited for longterm
objectives because of the risk and volatility (their value will fluctuate,
depending on market conditions) of these types of assets. It’s also a good
idea to determine your risk tolerance. If you are risk-averse, then less
volatile holdings are likely to provide the answer, although returns tend
to be lower for this kind of investment. Your investment advisor, who is
skilled at listening and knowledgeable about your investment options,
will help you with this part of the process.
And that brings us to patience. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and no
investment is going to pay-off overnight. Steady long-term thinking is
the key. So try to invest regularly, not just once a year during RSP season,
as so many people do. Set up a schedule with your investment advisor.
Consider investing as a regular part of your monthly budget, just like
paying the rent or the mortgage.
A pre-authorized contribution plan is your easiest way to do this,
deciding on a regular amount of money to be deducted from your bank
account. This method gives your money more time to grow and, if your
focus is saving for your retirement and you are putting your money into
an RSP, it can grow tax-free. That tax-free growth can be remarkable.
Suppose you put $250 per month into an RSP over 25 years. If your
holdings grow 6%, you’d end up with $169,848 or $5,254 more than if
you made an investment of $3,000 at the end of each year.
Partnership with an investment advisor. Planning your portfolio
carefully. Patience and long-term thinking. These are the basics to success
for many investors, and with good reason. They pay off.
TRSa U-12 indoor Soccer Team
By: James Prevost
Congratulations to the TRSA U-12 boys (the Red Devils), who had a
great regular indoor soccer season and a fantastic post-season. They were
undefeated during regular season play, and only lost one game in the city
playoffs finishing with a silver medal. With this silver medal they qualified for the
Provincial playoffs, where the boys finished as the top team in community indoor
soccer U-12 age group in Alberta. Their efforts earned them a 5 th place finish out
of the 12 top teams in Alberta in Tier 4 Indoor Soccer which is competitive club
play. What an accomplishment! Big thanks to the coaches Juan Carlos Eguren,
Don Robinson, Victor Eguren-Echaiz, and our team manager Julie Boucher. A large
thank you to the parents for your support through out this season, bravo! Way to
Go Red Devils!

TRSa Jerseys Find Their Way to
Mexico By: Richard Bergeron and Jane Calvert
Jack and Daphne Bergeron have been traveling down to the area north
of Puerto Vallarta since the 1960’s. For the last eight years, they have
spent their winters in the village of Lo De Marcos, a sleepy, quiet village
of about 3,000 people.
When their grandchildren started playing soccer, they would take their
left over soccer jerseys along and found that the kids in Mexico loved them.
The Bergerons are part of a group called “Amigos De Lo De Marcos” (see
link: www.amigosdelodemarcos.org/SiteEnglish/indexEnglish.html) which was
formed to support the village and foster “friendship” with the towns people.
Most of the members of the group are Canadians and Americans that live
year round or spend the winter in Lo De Marcos. Many of the folks involved
in the group are retired experts in various fields and do all kinds of things to
help out the community, including renovating the Seniors Centre, fixing up
the school, providing books, supplies and computers to the school, support
recycling, free veterinarian clinics, water quality monitoring, providing
scholarships for high school students, helping teach English in the schools,
and building garbage collection stations.
And of course, supporting the local sports teams. Everyone plays soccer
and there are boys and girls teams of all ages in every little village around.
TRSA soccer jerseys have become a popular fashion item in Lo de Marcos.
TRSA players: If you would like to donate your old jerseys to children of
Lo de Marcos, simply give them back to your coach at the end of the season.
You can donate jerseys from other seasons as well. TRSA will collect them
and give them to the Bergerons to take to Mexico in the fall.
Subject: Thank You TRSA From the Kids of Lo de Marcos
To: Jessica
The kids from the village of Lo de Marcos would like to send out a
big Thank You to TRSA for the soccer jerseys.
I have attached some pictures for you.
From the pile of jerseys that my folks took down to Mexico they
were able to piece together enough common colors to outfit a number
of teams. For many it was the first time ever to have a team jersey.
The kids are very proud of their new colors and truly treasure these
jerseys.
Anyone that visits the area 45 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta will
likely see TRSA jerseys on clothes lines throughout the little towns.
Soccer coaches from all around keep visiting my parents and asking if
they have any more jerseys to give out. All winter long they would get
surprise gifts from the people in town, little things like a watermelon,
or flowers, with a note saying thank you.
As things gear up for the new outdoor season, if you come across
any jerseys that you don’t know what to do with - I will gratefully take
them off your hands.
My folks will be heading back down to Mexico again in October and
can take a truck full.
Please feel free to share this. It would be wonderful to get some full
team sets at the end of the season.
Thank you, Richard
ask the cheesemonger By: Tania Hrebicek
Q: What causes the “blue” in blue cheese?
A: To create a blue cheese, it’s necessary for blue mold spores
to be present in the cheesemaking environment and/or for
them to be introduced into the milk during the early stages of
production.
In commercial cheesemaking these spores are in the mixture of
bacteriological starter cultures that help give the cheese its identity as
it matures. There are two molds used in the making of blue cheese: the
best-known and the more piquant version is Penicillium roqueforti, which
originated in the caves at Roquefort, France, thereby giving the famous
cheese its name. This mold is also used in cheeses such as Ireland’s Cashel
Blue and British Stilton. A milder version of blue mold called Penicillium
glaucum is found in Bleu d’Auvergne (France) and Gorgonzola Dolce
(Italy). Amazingly, it takes only one teaspoon of blue mold to inoculate a
1,500 gallon (5,600 litre) vat of milk!
At a certain point during aging, the cheese is usually pierced with needles
to add in the “bluing”. This allows air to enter the cheese where it reacts
with the enzymes and spores, activating the blue mold in the pierced area
and along any naturally occurring fissures in the paste. The mold continues
to develop as the cheese matures, helping to break down the paste until
it reaches the desired consistency and potency. The extent to which the
blue mold and “veining” are present in the cheese is controlled by the
cheesemaker and, in the case of name-protected cheese, governed by its
traditional recipe.
Sometimes customers will tell us that they don’t like blue cheese, and
we are quick to explain that there are many different flavour characteristics
within the blue family. If you do not like sharp or spicy blue cheeses such as
Stilton, then try a milder one such as Bleu de Bresse. We also recommend
pairing blues with a fruit condiment or artisanal honey; the sweetness curbs
the sharpness of the blue and adds more flavour dimension to the cheese.
it’s Beer Time! By: Stephen Richmond
BBQ’s are being swept off. Propane tanks are being re-filled. Red
meat is being marinated as we speak. Ah yes... it must be beer time
in Edmonton. Is it just me or is almost impossible to fire up the
‘barbie’ without a beer in hand? It never ceases to amaze me how three
such pure and simple ingredients, water, barley and yeast can produce such
a dazzling array of different flavours of the amber nectar. The next time
you’re in your favourite beer store take a look at the selection of beers now
available in Alberta. From the four corners of the globe they come… pretty
much anywhere in Europe, North and South America, Australia and Asia.
An increasing trend in the beer market in the last couple of years is for
breweries to produce limited edition and seasonal beers. Good news and
bad news…just as you find a great new beer you can hang your hat on
it’s gone only to be replaced by another favourite. The endless search for
beer nirvana continues. In no particular order here are my three favourite
recommendations for a deck or patio near you. These are all limited or
seasonal beers so grab them while you can.
Anchor Brewing Bock Beer, San Francisco
“Bock” beer, released in celebration of the arrival
of spring, is an ancient and mysterious part of the
brewing tradition. Over time, the term “bock” has
come to mean a beer darker and stronger than the
brewery’s “regular” brew. The dark satiny texture
of Anchor Bock, with its rich hints of chocolate,
caramel and roasted barley make this one of the
finest examples of this style of beer. (Tasting note
courtesy of Anchor Steam Brewery.)
Phillips Brewing Amnesiac Double IPA, Victoria
Mind blowing amounts of hops give this beer
tons of flavour and aroma. Not for the faint of
heart. Pair with: smoked brisket, grilled lamb,
Gorgonzola or Cambozola cheeses. (Tasting note
courtesy of Phillips Brewing.)
Rogue Voodoo Donut
Bacon Maple Ale,
Oregon
The name of this beer
just about says it all and
yes guys it does contain
bacon and maple syrup! A monster of a beer not to
be taken lightly and at seven percent alcohol needs
to be treated with the utmost respect. With it’s
shocking pink bottle colour they’ll be no losing this
one in the fridge. You’ll need a couple of friends
and some hearty foods on the BBQ to see the end
of this one.
The Rotary Club of Edmonton Strathcona are continuing
with their fundraising project, the Canadian Flag Project
in 2012.
For a $50 donation, which all goes to local charitable needs,
the club’s way of saying “thanks for the help” is to offer to plant
a Canadian Flag on your yard on each of the long weekends this
summer: May 24, July 1, and September’s Labour Day. We have some
families that give $100 and we plant two fl ags for them, while others
don’t take a fl ag at all, but still make their donation to help. However
you view it, we would really appreciate your help and participation.
There are many needs that we as a group can help.
Can you believe we have given about $70,000 to local charities in
the past two years? A few of the donations were as follows: $50,000
to the Autism Society to aid in the development of their new facility,
plus funding for the Zebra Foundation who helps abused children.
We have also helped the Rainbow Society, Lung Association, and
numerous others.
I am Ken, the old fl ag boy on 43 Avenue and I would love to talk
with you about a fl ag for your place. Call me on my cell 780-668-
9932, or email me at kenhaverland@telus.net.
Testimonial:
We are proud to support the Rotary Flag project. Not only does
it allow us to show our Canadian pride, but all the money we give,
goes to help a real need in our city. Two of the charities they have
helped are the Autism Society with their new facility and the Zebra
Foundation who assist abused children. For this reason, we would
love to see Rotary fl ags in everyone’s yard.
Seniors Focus
By: Glenn Kissick, Seniors Rep for TRAC and Riverbend Community League
Some of us have put on many miles as we traveled down south to
Arizona, California and back again since my last column that I wrote
back in January. I thank David Faber, Richard Perry, and Sherri
Henderson for filling in for me in my absence.
Many things have happened at the Southwest Edmonton Seniors
Association Steering Committee since January. We now have a website
at www.SWEdmontonSeniors.ca and an email address: swedmontonseniors@
gmail.com. These two new communication tools can be used by ALL seniors
or seniors groups to pass on information about their activities, events, or
club information to other seniors and groups in southwest Edmonton. The
way it will work is very easy - just send a email with all the information
(event/group/meeting, date, time, place, etc.) to the email address and we
will in turn put it up on the website. Please note that this site will be up
and running after the first week of June.
The Southwest Steering Committee members are as follows:
Chairman - David Faber
Vice-Chairman – Richard Perry
Secretary – Bruce Duncan
Treasury – Glen Wong
Communications – Joe Roberts
TRAC Seniors Rep – Glenn Kissick
This is the steering committee that will work for the next two year
term, which will then be handed over to the newly constituted Southwest
Edmonton Seniors Association. As mentioned in the article in the
last issue, the committee has defined the “Terms of Reference” for the
committee and had it passed at an open meeting made up of seniors from
many of the community leagues that expressed an interest in working on
behalf of the Southwest Seniors Association. The next order of business
will be to have the Bylaws for this committee passed at the next open
meeting for all seniors in the area at the Lillan Osborne High School. We
expect this meeting to occur in the last part of May so watch for signs on
23 Avenue by the TCRC entrance or keep an eye on the new website for
dates and times.
Also, the following committees have been formed:
Research: Will visit all of the seniors facilities in the southwest area
of Edmonton to determine what is here now, what is lacking, and
what will be required in the future.
Bylaws: Will devise the responsibilities of each person on the
committees and the way in which the committees will work.
Grants and Fundraising: Will apply for grants or fundraise for the
operation of the steering committee and events.
Events: Promotion of the Southwest Seniors Association.
Communications: Writing articles for the website and local
newsletters. Receiving and sending information pertaining to seniors
and/or seniors groups in the southwest area of Edmonton.
Pickleball Courts on the two south end tennis courts which were previously
damaged due to the large tree roots. The league is currently in the process
of having the surface redone and lines painted to allow the courts to be
used for Pickleball. Pickleball is a great game! For more information on
how to play this game go to the Pickleball website www.USAPA.org to
Encaustics is the art of painting with coloured wax using traditional
heat implements, annealing tools, fryers and torches. This art form
has been around for thousands of years. An example is the Fayum
Paintings (wax tomb paintings of Egyptian Pharaohs). These fine
contemporary artists, using coloured beeswax have put together a
very interesting and unusual cross section of works. Don’t miss this
The Riverbend Community League Board has agreed to be a “Supporter’
of the wonderful Southwest Edmonton Farmers’ Market this summer,
and we will also be sponsoring the Snow Valley Ski’s and Tees Charity
Golf Tournament on May 25 (see page 10). Riverbend has also voted to
support the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues’ upcoming 100th Anniversary Project, which is a fi ve year fi nancial commitment, and is well
within our ability to support.
Volunteers are needed for the 7th Annual TRAC 10K community
fundraiser on May 27. Riverbend and the other area community leagues are
supplying the volunteers for this event, so have a look at the details on page 5,
and please consider what you can do to help. I urge you also to check out and
support the Win4Skin 3-on-3 Street Hockey fundraiser at Brookside Hall on
June 2 (see page 11). This event was started two years ago by a remarkable
group of young people from our community as a tribute to a friend lost to
malignant melanoma. Information on both the TRAC 10K and Win4Skin is
available on our website: www.riverbendonline.ca.
The Board has discussed creating a community history document, notably
focusing on our original Brookside and Brander Gardens neighbourhoods
with input from the many original residents that are still in these communities.
We are looking into what resources and grants are available, and also looking
at what other neighbourhoods have done. This project will probably take
the form of a new committee or working group. If you are interested in
being involved, please contact Dave at: 780-440-8340. I’ve spoken to a few
people about this already and I think this could be a wonderful experience for
everyone.
Last but not least, please be careful on our roads this spring and summer,
as our kids are now getting out on their bikes. Thanks!
The board
of The
R i d g e
C o m m u n i t y
League wants
a time out on
the planned
construction
of new town
homes in
Haddow Park.
At their April 25 board meeting,
the board voted to ask the City
for a moratorium on the proposed
“First Place” home buyers
program.
The move comes after
residents of the community
expressed concern over the
proposed development that is
expected to begin construction
in 2016. Some of the discussions
included the implications to the
limited number of soccer fi elds
in the southwest part of the city,
retaining perceived and limited
parkland, and the desire to have
an overall plan for the parks
instead of breaking them into
disjointed pieces.
The town homes will be built
on the parcel of land that was
“FiRST PLace” hOMe BUyeRS PROGRaM
turned over to the City from the
Edmonton Catholic School Board
which was declared surplus land
in 2006.
“A committee for Haddow
and Henderson Park areas has
been proposed,” said David
Faber, the president of The Ridge
Community League.
Faber explains that opposition
is growing over the need for town
homes to be built on existing
green space.
The “First Place Program” was
set up in 2006 during a housing
boom, and was created to assist
entry level home buyers. The
program is designed to allow the
buyer to put off the land costs
until the fi fth year of owning the
home so they don’t have to face
as expensive of a mortgage in the
fi rst year.
“Market conditions have
changed since the ‘First Place
Program’ was introduced six
years ago,” said Faber.
“We don’t see the urgency
to add more town homes, when
developers are building other less
expensive units as close as three
blocks away.”
“So far we already have at
least fi ve volunteers that want
to be part of the committee, and
we’re expecting that now that
word is spreading about what the
City is planning, we’ll fi nd other
concerned volunteers who want
to take part.”
“We’re looking for volunteers
to help while we do a review with
City planners to see what impact
the housing project will have on
Haddow Park.”
Faber says he’s received initial
interest through emails, and
people stopping him in the street.
The City has set up a web link
to explain the First Place Program.
www.edmonton.ca/for_residents/
NPDP_Community_Manual.pdf
While the green space in the
park will be smaller, it’ll still be
the originally planned size as the
town homes will take over the
foot print that was meant for the
school.
The board of The Ridge
Community League has also
asked another branch of the City
to formally defi ne the land area
in Haddow Park that will be the
League’s licensed boundary.
It’s there that a new rink, and
adjacent building is proposed.
The board wants to see how the
League’s plot and the former
Catholic School site line up.
Haddow Park is part of phase
three of the “First Place” project
that will see housing created on
more than twenty parcels of land
city wide.
“Any problems in the design
and development of the town
homes should be worked out in
phase one over the next twelve
months,” said Councillor Bryan
Anderson. “By the time phase
three rolls around in 2016 those
wrinkles should be smoothed
over.”
Potential developers will
be asked to agree to meet the
community’s needs in building
the town homes including having
them match the style of homes in
the immediate surrounding area.
Spirit of riverbend
As I write this, Alberta is getting ready for an April election, central
Canada is experiencing an influx of butterflies that has not been
experienced in decades, and other Canadians are looking forward to
warmer days, getting outdoors, gardening, cycling, hiking, and much more
that come with the advent of the warmer weather and the promise of spring.
One of the joys of living where we get four seasons is the anticipation that
comes from each new season—and sometimes, here in Alberta it seems that
we can experience all four in one day!
Springtime offers us a chance for renewal and new life as so many of us
re-engage with outdoor activities. Gardeners head off to the greenhouses to
plan and even buy what they will soon be planting in their gardens. New
soccer players try on their shin pads and shorts in anticipation of getting
out onto the field and running around kicking and passing the ball all the
while contemplating how exactly do those players do a bicycle kick or a
header?! Many golfers look forward to playing on their favourite course at
home rather than far away in California or Arizona. Others look forward
to spending time with their children or grandchildren in the park or
playground In marvelling Stitches at the Quilt sounds Studio of children laughing, screaming with
glee, or inciting, “Push me higher”. Reconnecting with family and friends
outdoors help us to reconnect with nature.
Nature comes Longarm alive Quilting in new ways Services in the spring. When will the leaves on
scrapqwn@shaw.ca
Springtime institchesquiltstudio.blogspot.com
in Edmonton seems to come in fits and starts, much like real
life. Sometimes everything is coming up roses. Sometimes we are all but
overwhelmed by a dump of snow that bends our tulips. On certain days
we can feel a freshening breeze that reminds us of the summer ahead and
then with one In blasting Stitches gust we Quilt have remembrance Studio of the winter just past.
We can embrace the promise of what lies ahead or we can slip back into the
a Stellar Performance at
Riverbend United By: Chris Giffen
The Annual Youth Cantata (Musical Theatre Production) at Riverbend
United Church was on Saturday, May 5 and Sunday, May 6. The
Youth Group put together another completely original script and
score during the month of April.
This year’s production was called “An Abandoned Place” - a modern
interpretation of the story of the Israelites in the wilderness: where a group
of young adults decide to leave suburbia for the inner city ‘wilderness’
where they strive to build a community and sustain it in a poor forgotten
neighbourhood.
The script and score was created by Christopher Giffen, the youth and
family minister at Riverbend United, along with Jon Spaner, Ben Severson,
and young people from the congregation. The team of choreographers were
Laura Cox- a local dance instructor, and Raydel Martinez Portuondo- a
professional Cuban/Canadian dancer. The cast was stellar, and the show
was an incredible success for the whole congregation.
EYE ON REAL ESTATE
An Informative and Interactive look into the
Edmonton Real Estate Market by Darrell Cook -
Realty Executives Progressive.
Recently during an early morning workout at the Terwillegar Rec
Centre, Bill asked me a great question and I would like to share it as
well as my answer with you.
Question: Do Realtors use City of Edmonton Assessments when
preparing market evaluations for their clients?
My Answer: Although Realtor’s may refer to city assessments for
information purposes, generally they are not used in a Current Market
Evaluation. My market evaluations consist of active, pending, sold
and expired listings similar to my clients property, and if possible, I try
to stay within the borders of their community.
It is important to be as current as possible, usually drawing on
properties which have been on the market in the last few months. Also
taken into consideration are things like location, style of home, size,
condition, upgrades, parking, and basement development.
The City of Edmonton updates assessed property values to refl ect the
market value as of July 1 each year. Therefore, assessed property
values may not coincide with actual property values as determined by
a Current Market Evaluation.
If you have a question you would like addressed in the next issue of
The Ragg-Times, please send me an email.
Are you interested in a Current Market Evaluation of your property?
Send me an email or call me direct 780-915-8800 anytime, I would
be happy to assist!
Scona Lords a Leapin
By: Ron Nesbitt, Teacher, Strathcona High School
Springtime brings new life, changing seasons,
and a whirlwind of activity. Of course, Scona’s
busy hallways are always full of life all the time,
but here’s just a few of the highlights:
In Athletics, spring means track and field…so at
Strathcona, that means another championship season.
Well done, Lords! However, one of Scona’s newest
teams is also building a fantastic legacy, including a
successful trip to Hawaii. With great thanks to their corporate sponsors,
parents and teachers, Scona’s Women’s Rugby team played four games on a
successful April tour. The team’s 51 members, under the guidance of Scona
staff members Mark and Roberta Cannon had a great time and competed
well. The season will be wrapping up in late May, and Scona is expected to
challenge for yet another City Championship in both Men’s and Women’s
action.
In Arts news, the Drama department’s presentation of “Legally Blonde:
the Musical” was a smash hit, filling the Arts Barns with laughter and song.
Huge congratulations must be sent to the nearly fifty students making up
the cast and crew, led by the talented duo of Ms. Linette Smith and Mr.
Stephen Delano. In addition, Scona’s award winning Senior Band, under the
direction of Dr. Craig Brennan, will be performing their final concert of the
year at The University of Alberta’s Convocation Hall on Wednesday, May
23. Contact the office at 780-439-3957 for ticket information.
Of course, as we march toward June, final exams are never far from
anyone’s mind. May brings the challenge of Advanced Placement(AP) Exams
that give students the opportunity to gain University credit in core subjects,
art, and languages. In turn, the phenomenal results garnered by Scona
students have led to an exciting partnership with Cambridge University. The
Capstone Program, offered only at 15 schools worldwide, gives students the
opportunity to take on an independent, interdisciplinary research project—
and Scona was selected because of our outstanding level of AP achievement
and involvement. In fact Edmonton’s Global News was at the school in late
April to report on this exciting development for their NewsHour broadcast.
This kind of success both in and out of the classroom leads to recognition
at high levels—like for Grade 12 student Kaitlyn Melton, who was recently
awarded $30,000 in scholarships at UBC. Way to go, Kaitlyn!
In addition, all students and staff are gearing up for finals, including the
challenging Grade 12 Diploma Exams. EPSB offers a variety of Diploma
Review sessions offered at varying times for all subjects—check the District’s
website for more details. Also, every Scona student has their personal exam
schedule listed on SchoolZone—good luck to all!
educating @ home: Social contact By: Kathy Malkin, B.Ed., M.C
Home-educating kids and parents need to have regular social contact with
other home-educating kids and parents. Because of the demands of homeschooling
this can be challenging to organize but the reasons are important
to persevere. Connecting through organizations, yahoo groups, or neighbourhood
gatherings provide social opportunities.
Kids:
1. Kids and teens need to play with others, not particularly to be “socialized”
or learn rules of society, but rather to learn about themselves - their likes
and dislikes, their skills and values, and their interacting and adaptive styles
amongst a diversity of playmates. Parents can help with this - through
discussion, through redirection, and through direct intervention when
teachable moments present themselves. Kids need to be taught how to be
inclusive, how to have conversations with both girls and boys of all ages
and adults, and how to solve problems that may arise. This early social skills
teaching ensures kids can be comfortable and well-adapted now and later on.
2. Kids need to gather with other home-schooled kids and families so they
can feel part of a community, just like kids in brick schools have a builtin
community. The benefit of home-schooling is that it is a multi-aged
community of families.
Parents:
1. When home-educating parents gather, they learn by discussing
curriculums, teaching strategies, various subjects, how to organize the days
and year, meeting the needs of multiple ages, grades, skills, and learning
styles. They get tips about coordinating learning with field trips with kids’
daily activities and classes, home-educating events, volunteer and project
work, and community / social gatherings.
2. Talking about the drawbacks and benefits of home-schooling and
the community is also important since home education is choosing an
alternative way of delivering public education. It can be challenging simply
because it is not the mainstream choice. Home education can sometimes be
misunderstood and those families choosing it may not be seen as diverse a
group as those choosing more typical brick-school delivery. But accepting,
honouring, and celebrating the huge diversity of families’ and kids’ and their
choices, opportunities, and accomplishments is what home education is
about. Talking about policy, research, and issues that affect home-educators
and kids’ opportunities overall means home-educators stay well-informed
and involved.
3. Finally, parents (usually mothers) need social and emotional support about
how to coordinate and integrate learning with all the rest of family and
community life, while being both mother and teacher, wife and advocate,
and friend and helper.
Overall, social contact provides opportunity for support, fun, learning, and
growth - for kids, for parents, and for the community overall.
Our Kids are Totally Mad Over
Using their New iPads
Monsignor William irwin School
By: Reny L. Clericuzio and Denise D’Agostini
Technology plays a key role in 21st Century
learning. Through technology children not only
learn but also prepare themselves for the future.
Our parent community is very excited that children of all
ages in our school are using iPad’s as well as laptops and
netbooks to research and search for information that is
needed to enhance the program of studies.
Our Kindergarten classrooms, both English and
French, have been using their iPad’s to demonstrate learning and to document it
with the use of the camera features. Our school is moving toward a very Reggio
Emilia inspired learning approach. Documentation plays an important role in being
able to speak about your learning. The iPad has truly enhanced this process. Our
children are able to state the academic goals that they are working on, share them
with each other, the teachers on staff, and their parents.
The iPad applications that we are currently using assist students in everything
from print formation, math fact practice to social studies and science concepts and
projects. Recently the Grade 3 classes researched different models of robotics and
used the information to create robots that reflected the learning from their iPad’s.
Our Grade 6 students filmed project presentations, edited and shared them using the
SmartBoard. We have also noticed that many children also have their own personal
iPads at home. This truly helps the learning process in that they already are aware
of the process to be used and have great applications ideas to share with the school.
We purchased iPad’s not only for our students but for our staff as well. We had
an exciting and informative PD workshop looking at different aspects of iPad use
in education. Teachers need access to email, internet, and applications on the go
as they seldom are sitting at their desks. Being on the go, the iPad is an excellent
tool for teachers when the moment arises that they need new information, they can
quickly gather it or search during lessons making learning fun and exciting for their
students. Teachers are modeling how important and easy it is to get information
that can enhance learning.
This year Lillian Osborne High School expanded its fine arts department to include a creative writing and visual arts course. Each day, students meet in a workshop
environment writing and critiquing poetry and short fiction of all genres. The written texts are complimented by the creation of visual work that includes pencil
drawings, paintings, and a variety of mixed media. As a school with a twenty-first century focus, this cross-curricular program prepares our students for the widening
I can tell already that I’m in one of those moods.
Before I even watch the six o clock news
It’s one of those days where people persist
In speaking to me, and insist and insist
One of those mornings when I might guarantee
That the best things in life are not those that are free
I feel if I were a bird I’d most likely be flightless
An unsuccessful Ed Norton with no one to fight with
But fists that are curled and ready to punch
But a stomach unsettled after just a light lunch
My worrying mother of course thinks I’m depressed
But I’m just doing that teen thing and it’s all for the best
When the hallways are clogged with not students but thoughts
I have urges to toss out my mind on the spot
But I have to rethink and rethink yet again
But on a day like today I’m not really all sane
When I look in the mirror I can’t see past the spectacles
The pale skin, matted hair, the dusted on freckles
Yet I know that behind a face that blends in
Is a strange sort of being to whom I’ll give in
And of course I’ll give in because it’s that very thing
That allows me to write and allows me to sing
Tomorrow I know I’ll wake up with a smile
But today is a day that will drag on for miles
Kelly Chen
By: Rupinder Bains
There is no silence in an operating room.
She lies, stripped, the only covering her bare skin, and even that will be
taken from her soon enough when she is carefully and deliberately sliced
open. Tubes hang from her body, needles poking and prodding. She can’t feel.
There’s just her, and his memory. A doctor lifts his scalpel and nods to a nurse.
Miles away, he boards a plane.
There is no silence in an airport.
Beeping, yelling, tearful goodbyes are prominent. He checks in his bag,
passes through security under the scrutiny of tough, old enforcers. He flips
through a magazine. He can’t wait. He boards the plane and sits in his assigned
seat, waiting. There’s just him, and a picture. The pilot starts the engine and
nods to an attendant.
Miles away, she lies on a cold, steel table.
A machine is breathing for her.
The plane is moving.
She’s asleep.
He’s wide awake.
She doesn’t forget.
He hates to remember.
So what happens now?
Wellness
Well Now: Surf the Wellness Wave
By: Kathy Malkin M.C. (Counselling Psychology)
Early on in my career, I wanted to be a Wellness Coordinator, an
occupation which helps people working in companies to achieve
optimal health through information, programs, and counselling.
Although not officially, I did it anyway since I helped many people,
created and facilitated career and personal development workshops, was a
weight loss and stress reduction counsellor, a dating consultant, a fitness
instructor, a career counsellor, a biofeedback coach, a reiki, EFT, reflexology
practitioner, a yoga teacher, a business and executive coach, and a healthfocused
body-oriented psychotherapist.
There is more to do! The definition of a Wellness Coordinator also refers
to helping people in communities, towns, and cities to plan and implement
massive public health improvements.
Let’s work towards this goal by introducing you to something that helps
you become aware of, and responsible for, your own health and wellness.
Meet the Real Age Test, an online tool developed by a panel of broad-minded
integrative doctors, including Mehmet Oz (of Oprah fame) and Mike Roizen
(authors of the YOU series of health self-help books).
I like this tool because it is relatively quick and easy to do, while providing
a good overview of wellness areas and habits to consider and address. It is
based on the premise that knowledge is powerful and preventive and helps
people direct their own wellness and health care in order to maintain their
youngest health age. Increasing healthy behaviours while managing and/or
decreasing potential health risk factors improves wellness.
Once you have completed the series of button-click questions (plus your
age, height, weight, and waist measurement), you get a Real Age score -- your
functional age based on physical and emotional strengths and weaknesses.
The score may surprise you. It may mirror your actual age or it may be lower,
indicating a younger, healthier person, or it may be higher than your actual
age, in which case, there will be actions you can take to reclaim your health.
In addition to the score, there is a commentary detailing strengths and
suggesting corrective action. I even printed off a week-long eating plan
tailored to my result.
The Real Age site also has a wealth of information in sections titled
Assessments, Health Action Plans, Conditions, Living Healthy, Health
Guides, and Blogs. There are tips, recipes, and support galore.
Please remember though, as with any “test”, the results are a snapshot in
time only and do not define or limit you in any way. We are all dynamic,
creative, evolving individuals with strengths given us to make the lives of
our dreams.
So why not join the wellness journey and check your Real Age today?
Claim and shape your life today. Check out www.realage.com and then follow
the link to take the test.
If you would like to participate in the wellness movement, do the test
and email your name (first name only if you want), actual age, Real Age
score, and a comment if you wish to wellness.swell@gmail.com. Let’s make
Riverbend Sisters Pen children’s Novel By: Kari and Brit Trogen
Two former
R i v e r b e n d
r e s i d e n t s ,
Brit and Kari
Trogen, recently
celebrated the
launch of their
first children’s
novel Margaret
and the Moth Tree
with an Edmonton
homecoming.
Brit and Kari grew
up in Terwillegar
Park Estates in
Riverbend, just
steps away from the
river valley. They
both attended Earl
Buxton Elementary
School (where Kari
had the pleasure of
returning recently
for a school
reading), and were
actively involved
in dance and musical theatre. Later at the University of Alberta, Brit got
a degree in molecular genetics while Kari studied English, going to grad
school for Creative Writing in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Currently, Kari
lives in Toronto where she works as a freelance writer, while Brit is in New
York working as a video producer and writer.
The sisters were inspired to write Margaret and the Moth Tree while
traveling through New Brunswick on a road trip. Kari had previously been
working on young adult fiction and on a play based on the life of L. M.
Montgomery for her master’s thesis, while Brit had published science fiction
short stories. But while listening to Kate DiCamillo’s The Tale of Despereaux
on audiobook during that trip, they began to think seriously about children’s
fiction. After a year and a half of collaborating on the manuscript via Skype
and Google Docs, their book was accepted for publication by Kids Can
Press.
Margaret and the Moth Tree is a story for readers eight to twelve, described
by the publisher as “a rich and imaginative story of plain-looking orphans,
small creatures with drab, gray wings and what it means to be truly beautiful.”
The novel tells the tale of Margaret Grey, a brave orphan trapped in the care
of Miss Switch, the beautiful but devious Matron of Hopeton Orphanage.
But there is something special about Margaret: her exceptional sense of
hearing, which leads her to a mysterious, thorny brush on the orphanage
grounds. With newfound courage and a secret friend, Margaret concocts a
plan to defeat Miss Switch once and for all.
Margaret and the Moth Tree is available at major bookstores across Canada,
and online at Amazon.ca. Edmontonians seeking signed copies can contact
Greenwoods’ Bookshoppe.
To arrange a school reading, please contact Kids Can Press or find Margaret and the Moth
Tree on Facebook.
Darryl and Jennifer Feist of
Port Moody, B.C., will be
forever and continuously
grateful to blood donors. That is
because their middle child and only
son, Luke, will need blood products
for the rest of his life.
At two years old, Luke was
diagnosed with Factor V deficiency
after a seemingly minor cut on his
lip would not stop bleeding. An
essential blood protein, Factor V
helps blood cells to clot in response to an injury.
Luke is one of just six patients across Canada reported to have severe
Factor V deficiency. Luke’s deficiency not only means that he will need to
be carefully monitored throughout his childhood (no team sports, limited
play outdoors, etc.), it also means he will likely rely on the generosity of
strangers for the rest of his life. He needs blood transfusions for treating
minor injuries such as a cut lip, bitten tongue or nose bleed, major injuries
such as internal bleeding, and as a preventative measure prior to operation,
such as dental surgery.
While Luke received red blood cell transfusions on his very first visit to
the BC Children’s emergency room, Luke most often receives FFP (fresh
frozen plasma), a product imported from Alberta to B.C. Luke most recently
received a plasma transfusion at B.C. Children’s before receiving dental work
on December 20, 2011.
“My husband Darryl and I are incredibly grateful that blood products
are available for our son when he needs them,” says Jennifer. “Blood was
the greatest gift we could have asked for this past Christmas season.”
Canadian Blood Services asks more NEW blood donors to step up and
save lives. If you’ve ever thought about giving blood, pick up the phone and
book your appointment today.
Archbishop Joseph MacNeil School, 750 Leger Boulevard
Saturday, May 19
9:00 am - 1:00 pm
Call 1-888-2-DONATE (1-888-236-6283) for more information or to
book an appointment to donate. Appointments are recommended to help
reduce clinic wait times. If you’ve already booked an appointment, please
honour it.
Healthy people can donate blood every 56 days, starting at age 17. Firsttime
donors after the age of 61, or regular donors who want to continue
donating after their 71st birthday will need to consult their doctor for
medical permission to donate. Donors must feel well and are required to
have their donor card or photo and signature I.D. at the time of donation.
For more info about donor eligibility, visit blood.ca/eligibility or call 1-888-
Mother’s Day
By: Sumeet Bhamra, age 14
Wherever you go the light shines bright.
You are the reason this family stays tight.
Everything you do and everything you say,
Is a symbol of life and the reason for day.
The shine in your eye sparkles like a star.
The way you help us will make us go far.
Every problem you solve with your might,
And every struggle is gone with a fight.
You keep the glowing sun up during the day,
To bring the beauty, with every shinning ray.
And every night the stars glow bright,
To show the world your beautiful sight.
You help us to sleep when we have bad dreams.
Your face is filled with beautiful gleams.
Many people say that life is God’s say,
So I say that you are God in every way.
These are some reasons yours I’ll forever stay,
Now have a nice, happy mother’s day.
Sumeet was part of the Riverbend Library’s teen writing group last summer where local author Natasha
Deen helped lead the young writers through the development of their stories with writing tips and techniques.
The Mystery of the Missing Dolls chapter 7: Before the Show By: Kira Malkin, age 10
Andrei’s mind rushed around his brain, looking for answers. He thought
“We could... Oh, that wouldn’t work. Maybe we could...”
“Hey! I’ve got an idea!” Anya said suddenly. “We can - or at least one
of us can - change the white mind-control light bulb to a normal white one.”
“Yes, it sounds good. But how do we change the light, and where do we get
a normal bulb?” Peter said reasonably.
“Spoilsport. Just when I come up with a great idea, Mr. Reasonable has to
find the faults,” Anya muttered under her breath.
“I knew you might be impatient, Anya, but remember that Anton knew that
I know too much because I also know all about the mind-control machine.
Here, let me tell you,” Andrei started. “The mind-control machine has two
main ideas. One is that the mind-control part comes from the light bulb’s
secret messages, which pretty much say ‘Listen to Anton... Do his bidding...’ in
a really strong way. Part two is getting people to look at the light, so it flashes,
or shows different pictures. So when Anton gets to the part in the show where
he says ‘Anton is here, Anton is me, do my bidding...’ - I was going to be in
the show, you know - everyone is apparently just going to stand up and say
‘Anton... We are ready to do your bidding.’ Not like I believed it, until he did
it on Mother. Then it was like she was his slave.” Andrei did not look happy
about this last part. “And he threatened to mind-control me next if I didn’t
stop being so nosy.”
“We have to stop them,” Anya said.
“So let’s go get that light bulb!” Irina responded enthusiastically.
“We’ll get it in the shed. There were a few spares there,” Andrei suggested.
As it turned out, there was a perfectly white light bulb just inside the door,
but it was cracked. So they scoured the shack until Peter finally found another
one in the corner.
“Found one!” Peter cried out. “Andrei, where is the show?” he added.
“Anton always called it the Old Theatre,” Andrei answered.
“There’s only one theatre in town, and that must be it,” Irina thought
aloud.
“Is it the one where you were caught?” Dmitri questioned.
“Yes, it is,” Irina replied.
“Is it a trap?” Peter wondered.
In the silence that followed, Anya heard something like a mutter. She
jumped. “Was that a mutter?” she asked.
“It sounds to be coming from that mouse-hole that we overlooked earlier,”
Peter said.
“Since when do mouse-holes have grating over them?” Andrei asked
skeptically.
“Is that you, Andrei?” a voice rasped from inside the hole.
“Father? Is that you?” Andrei replied disbelievingly.
“Yes, it is. Now can you please move that grate before I get any more
claustrophobic?”
So Peter moved the grating aside like it was a piece of paper.
“What were you doing in there, Papa?”Anya asked, throwing her arms
around him.
“Not my choice. Anton put me in there to keep us all separated,” said
Father.
“Where is the boy? And the doll?” called an outraged voice from the
direction of the house.
“We’d better go now,” Peter said.
“We’ll fill you in on the way, Papa,” Anya said to her confused looking
“So what are we waiting for?” Dmitri asked. “Let’s go!”
