Gable walls<br />

Murals are also found <strong>at</strong> the friezes <strong>of</strong> the gable walls in the entrance porch. However, the colour <strong>of</strong><br />

these two paintings fades. Figures in an idyllic landscape are depicted in both murals. A bo<strong>at</strong>man<br />

and probably a guest are found on the mural on the right gable wall while a fisherman across a<br />

bridge is depicted on the mural <strong>at</strong> the left side (Fig. 112 and Fig. 113).<br />

The gable walls <strong>of</strong> the entrance hall are decor<strong>at</strong>ed with plastered sculptures and relief<br />

bene<strong>at</strong>h the ro<strong>of</strong>. Below the hanging ridges <strong>at</strong> the front eave and the rear eave are plastered relieves<br />

depicting undul<strong>at</strong>ing foliage scrolls symbolizing wandai 萬代 [ten thousand gener<strong>at</strong>ions], which<br />

are found on the gable walls <strong>at</strong> two sides <strong>of</strong> the entrance hall (Fig. 114a-b).<br />
