Entrance walls<br />

At the friezes <strong>of</strong> the entrance wall are murals th<strong>at</strong> are well preserved. Just <strong>at</strong>op the main door is a<br />

large mural entitled huli qiankun tu 壺裡乾坤圖 [Diagram <strong>of</strong> the universe inside the pot] (Fig.<br />

109a-c). To the left <strong>of</strong> the mural are two paintings and a piece <strong>of</strong> Chinese calligraphy. One <strong>of</strong> the<br />

paintings depicts idyllic landscape, while a paradise flyc<strong>at</strong>cher, emblem <strong>of</strong> longevity, is perching<br />

on a branch growing from a shoushi 壽石 [aged rock]. Close to these paintings is a poem in a<br />

roundel, which is known as Tang langzhong zhai yu zhugong tong yinjiu kan mudan 唐郎中宅與<br />

諸公同飲酒看牡丹 [Drinking wine and appreci<strong>at</strong>ing peony with <strong>of</strong>ficials in Doctor Tang’s<br />

mansion] written by Liu Yuxi 劉禹錫 (772-842). It reads,<br />

Jinri huaqianyin, ganxin zuishubei.<br />

Danchou huayouyu, buwei laorenkai<br />

今日花前飲,甘心醉數杯。<br />

但愁花有語,不為老人開。<br />
