Step 1:
The front base of the claw mount is removed and
replaced by a suitable pivot mount front base. Just as
the claw mount base, the new base has to be fitted
into place and inserted – soldering or the like is not
required.
Step 2:
First of all, the slides of the claw mount rear base are
removed. After that, the prism plate is installed onto
the rear base casing.
Two types of prism plates are available:
Mod. 3114/6040
The claws underneath the prism
plate are roughly adapted to
the old rear base, then the prism
plate is glued on. In most cases,
the open sights may still be used.
Mod. 4014/12
First of all, the casing of the old
rear base is cut down by approx.
4 mm. After that, the new plate
is glued on to be flush with the
surface of the rib, and secured
additionally with a screw. The
plate fits perfectly in the old rear
base.
Many hunters have bought a drilling at a good price or inherited one. Although the weapon
has an excellent shooting performance, the new owner would like to use a modern scope
on it. But the question is:
Is it worth it to fit a rifle, that has been equipped with a claw mount, with a
new scope?
What is crucial is not only the cost but also the technical practicability.
The new scope may generally be fitted by means of a claw mount of Suhler type, too.
However, there are some reasons not to do it:
The necessary adaptation work is very complex and requires highest professionalism. Since
in most cases the new scope has other dimensions than the old one, normally a second front
base has to be installed, which inevitably leads to modifications on the rifle. But even if the
existing front base can be used, about 6 – 8 hours of adaptation work become necessary.
Easy conversion into an EAW pivot mount with lever
EAW do now offer mounting parts that make it possible to easily convert a claw mount into
an EAW pivot mount with lever at low cost – without modifications on the rifle and complex
gunsmithing work.
Thanks to the great variety of available EAW top parts, the pivot mount with lever allows
the shooter to use any kinds of aiming devices alternately on only one pair of mounting
bases, without having to zero in the rifle again.
Small effort
Expenditure of work: approx. 1.5 to 2 hours plus material. Saving of costs: several hundred
EUROs!
The conversion of a claw mount into a pivot mount with lever is also worthwhile for bolt
action rifles that are to be fitted with modern scopes.
