General information<br />
According to the building regulations of<br />
the states, structures may only be erected,<br />
if the waste water disposal is properly<br />
and permanently secured . Property areas,<br />
on which waste water accumulates, must<br />
be connected to the public sewer system,<br />
if it is operational . Only by this connection<br />
enforcement, meaning through the<br />
direct connection of the property drainage<br />
with the public sewage system, does<br />
the backflow problem also develop in<br />
this area . Depending on the sewer type,<br />
separate or combined sewage system, a<br />
variance in the frequency of the backflow<br />
can be anticipated . Grey and rain water<br />
is discharged in separate pipe systems<br />
in a separate sewage system . Backflow<br />
thereby occurs less frequently in grey<br />
water drains due to a prohibited discharge<br />
of waste material, pipe clogging as well as<br />
through operation based measures in the<br />
sewer system, however, basically cannot<br />
be excluded .<br />
The physical effect of a sewer backflow is<br />
based on the principle of the communicating<br />
pipes . Since the pipe systems of the<br />
property drainage are directly connected<br />
with the public sewer, the waste water<br />
enters the area of the property drainage<br />
via these pipes in the event of a backflow .<br />
The same water level develops here as<br />
in the public sewer . This means that the<br />
waste water leaks from all unsecured<br />

openings, such as floor drains, toilets,<br />
etc . until the water levels are balanced .<br />
This results in a certain height for the<br />
backflow risk in property areas, for which<br />
special measures must be made against<br />
backflow within the property drainage .<br />
This height is called backflow level . The<br />
decisive backflow level is defined by the<br />
local authorities (local statutes) . If such<br />
a definition is missing, the height of the<br />
edge of the road above the connecting<br />
point of the property drainage pipe to the<br />
public sewage system applies as backflow<br />
level according to EN 12056-4 and<br />
DIN 1986-100 . Despite this, a backflow<br />
cannot be ruled out above this level, for<br />
example, due to a pipe obstruction .<br />
If a waste water backflow can penetrate<br />
into unprotected rooms within buildings,<br />
masonry and foundations are soaked .<br />
Water damages occur on furnishings .<br />
Health impairments via infectious diseases<br />
cannot be ruled out . Damages and the risk<br />
connected with a waste water backflow<br />
must therefore be kept as low as possible<br />
by a protection against backflow . The<br />
responsibility for this is generally that<br />
of the property owner according to the<br />
community waste water regulations . He<br />
can contract the proper experts, such as<br />
planners and installers for the planning<br />
and proper completion .<br />

The maximum protection against backflow<br />
can be achieved by a waste water lifting<br />
plant by guiding its pressure line via the<br />
backflow level (image 1 and 2).<br />
The planning and dimensioning of waste<br />
water lifting plants is accomplished<br />
according to EN 12056-4 (valid from<br />
01 .01 .2001) and the residual standard<br />
DIN 1986-100 (introduced in March 2002) .<br />
Since EN 12056 with residual standard<br />
DIN 1986-100 covers all waste water<br />
systems in the area including the building's<br />
outer cover and DIN 1986-100also<br />
the area of the property up to the property<br />
boundary (EN 752 applies here from<br />
the building's outer cover to the sewer<br />
connection in Europe), when granting the<br />
contract, the standard according to which<br />
the waste water system must be planned<br />
and laid out must be defined .<br />

Protection against backflow<br />
DIN 1986-100 'drainage systems for buildings<br />
and property" and EN 12056 "Gravity<br />
drainage systems inside buildings",<br />

waste, cleaning and washing agents,<br />
as well as various chemicals, paper,<br />
rags and sand (for example, in combined<br />
systems from rain water erosion .<br />
However, experience shows that all waste<br />
is initiated by ignorance or disregard,<br />
planning a drainage system . Accordingly,<br />
rain areas must be drained by separate<br />
pumping stations outside of the building .<br />
All drainage facilities located above the<br />
backflow level must be drained by natural<br />
drops (gravity principle); the waste water<br />
of these drainage facilities may not be<br />
drained via backflow stops and only via<br />
waste water lifting plants in exceptional<br />
cases (e .g . reconstruction) . If the respon-<br />

A buoyancy safeguard is an attachment<br />
of a system/ pump at the bottom (or at<br />
the pump shaft in the ground), in order<br />
to prevent floating during flooding (or an<br />
increased groundwater level) of the area ,<br />
since damages may develop on connec-<br />

pump pressure of the system, must be<br />

may not be structurally connected to the<br />

Surface water which accumulates outside<br />

Systems that prevent the penetration of<br />
materials and liquids into the waste water<br />
lifting plant, which extend hazardous or<br />
nuisance vapours or odours, which affect<br />
the materials in the waste water systems<br />
or interfere with the operation, must be<br />

include: Oil and gasoline according to EN<br />
858 /DIN 1999-100, light liquids closures<br />
dry, accessible location . The signalling<br />
system must also be attached at an easily<br />
