Day Two – Brezovica Ski Center and Gadime Cave<br />

Depart Prizren in the morning for Brezovica, <strong>Kosovo</strong>’s most popular mountain tourist resort,<br />

with peaks up to 2,500 meters. Enjoy a c<strong>of</strong>fee on one <strong>of</strong> the highest peaks <strong>of</strong> the country.<br />

Descend to the valley for lunch, followed by a drive to the town <strong>of</strong> Donje Gadime, where<br />

Deçan<br />

After lunch, head west to Deçan, a small town located in the stunning Deçan gorge and visit<br />

the Deçan monastery, located alongside the Lumbardhi river at the mouth <strong>of</strong> the gorge.<br />

The monastery was built between 1327 and 1335 by the Serbian king St. Stephen <strong>of</strong> Deçan.<br />

Although the buildings suffered damage during the Turkish occupation, the beautiful 14th-century<br />

frescoes were completely preserved. Today, 30 monks live in the monastery,<br />

continuing centuries <strong>of</strong> traditions.<br />

Rugova Experience will transport you and your bike from Pristina to Kuqisht in the heart <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Rugova Valley. We will then ride by bike to the village <strong>of</strong> Boge, where we will have a traditional<br />

lunch at the Rudi Group restaurant. Following lunch, we will first walk and then ride up the hill<br />

from Boge towards Shkrel and onward to Koshutan. En route, we will have c<strong>of</strong>fee at a local<br />

family’s house in the countryside and then continue to the headwaters <strong>of</strong> the Lumbardhi<br />

river. From there, we will continue riding downhill through a beautiful gorge to the<br />

Rugova water plant for a refreshing break before the final 14 kilometers,<br />

Depart Pristina early morning for the two-hour drive to the village <strong>of</strong> Isniq, where you will<br />

visit the Osdautaj kulla, a unique four-story version <strong>of</strong> the traditional stone tower. On the ground<br />

floor, a small Ethnological Museum presents an exhibit from the village <strong>of</strong> Isniq, including an<br />

authentic “oda,” or traditional men’s meeting room. We then continue to the historic,<br />

functioning water mill in Isniq and the 14th-century Serbian Orthodox Monastery in<br />

Deçan. The monastery <strong>of</strong>fers the chance to experience the “Palaiologos renaissance”<br />

<strong>of</strong> Byzantine-style painting. A guide is provided by the monastery in visiting the original<br />

frescoes in this unique church, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.<br />

The mountainous environment <strong>of</strong> Deçan adds to the pleasure <strong>of</strong> this experience.<br />

We then drive to Dranoc and stop en route at the “Souvenir Shop Jeta.”<br />

In Dranoc, we will visit a uniquely protected collection <strong>of</strong> kullas.<br />

The traditional stone tower homes <strong>of</strong>fer insights into the traditional<br />

living <strong>of</strong> the region – the men’s “oda”,” the “s<strong>of</strong>ra” (a shared table<br />

for meals), the “ahuri” (ground floor space for storage and livestock),<br />

“lama” (an area for preparing wheat). Traditional c<strong>of</strong>fee will<br />

be served in the “oda” <strong>of</strong> the Mazrekaj kulla.


After c<strong>of</strong>fee, we will visit the Rame Zymeri kulla for a traditional lunch, followed<br />

by a walk through Junik, which is the hometown to former heavyweight European<br />

boxing champion Luan Krasniqi, artist and writer Rexhep Goci, politician and writer<br />

Haxhi Kraki, and poet Din Mehmeti, among others. The tour continues to Helveti<br />

Tekke, an important spiritual place for the religious Tarikat sect in western<br />

<strong>Kosovo</strong>. Religious ceremonies in the Tekke express a long tradition <strong>of</strong> faith.<br />

This is the only kulla renovation initiated and financed by private investment. This kulla was<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficially inaugurated during the 2007 celebration <strong>of</strong> European Heritage Days in <strong>Kosovo</strong>.<br />

Mazrekaj kulla / Dranoc village, Deçan<br />

SSupported by the Swedish Government, this kulla was restored in 2004 and today has been<br />

transformed into a cultural center. It <strong>of</strong>fers an ideal venue for youth camps, seminars and<br />

family-style dinners, as well as for bed-and-breakfast stays. ORTA also recommends this<br />

kulla for filming, photography, product advertising and international presentations.<br />

Traditional music, dancing, “lahuta” demonstrations, singing, and “Kanun” storytelling can also<br />

be arranged. A “lahuta” is a traditional one-stringed instrument played throughout the Balkans.<br />

“Kanun” is a traditional set <strong>of</strong> laws existing throughout the region.<br />

Day One – Pristina and surroundings<br />

Enjoy a buffet breakfast at your hotel and begin with a tour <strong>of</strong> the historical sites in and<br />

around Pristina, such as the 15th-century “Great Mosque” <strong>of</strong> Sultan Mehmet Fatih; the middle<br />

Çarshisë mosque, built by Sultan Bajaziti in 1389; the Pristina Hamam (Turkish bath); the<br />

19th-century clock tower; and the Museum <strong>of</strong> <strong>Kosovo</strong>. The Museum is housed in an<br />

Austro-Hungarian-inspired building originally built for the regional Ottoman administration.<br />

From 1945 to 1975, the building served as headquarters for the Yugoslav National Army,<br />

although it has also hosted a Museum since 1963. You will also visit the Ethnographic<br />

Museum, Academy <strong>of</strong> Sciences and Arts <strong>of</strong> <strong>Kosovo</strong>, and the Ottoman Empire’s first<br />

administration for the province <strong>of</strong> <strong>Kosovo</strong>. From Pristina, we will drive to the<br />

Gazimestan monument commemorating the famous Ottoman victory <strong>of</strong><br />

June 15th, 1389. Visit Sultan Murat’s tomb in Tyrbe Mazgit, the beautiful<br />

Serbian Orthodox monastery <strong>of</strong> Graçanica, built around 1315 and the<br />

Roman ruins <strong>of</strong> Ulpiana – three <strong>of</strong> most important cultural heritage<br />

Day Two – Peja Cultural Tour<br />

We will continue to Peja in the morning for a city tour and visit to the 13th-century Peja<br />

patriarchate and the beautiful Rugova Valley. We will then visit Deçan Serbian Orthodox<br />

monastery, which was built by King Stefan, and continue to Radavc, source <strong>of</strong> the White<br />

Drin River. We then stop at Istok, home <strong>of</strong> the famous “Tr<strong>of</strong>ta” restaurant for a fresh<br />

trout lunch. Choose from any <strong>of</strong> the more than 20 ways the restaurant prepares<br />

Day Three – Gadime Cave<br />

After breakfast, we drive to the Paleozoic marble cave <strong>of</strong> Gadime, where the director will introduce<br />

us to the region and explain the ancient formation <strong>of</strong> the cave. Open since 1976, it is the only<br />

cave accessible by tourists in <strong>Kosovo</strong>. The cave has three natural entrances, situated at 576, 582<br />

and 584 meters above sea level, but less than 10 meters above the riverbed. Return to Pristina.<br />

Day One - Explore Pristina, a modern city with traces <strong>of</strong> ancient cultures – Illyrian, Roman,<br />

Byzantine and Ottoman<br />

We start at 10 am with visits to the Ethnographical Museum, Emin Gjiku’s House, the Imperial Mosque<br />

built in 1461 by the Turkish Sultan Mehmet II (known as the Conqueror), the Imperial Bath built in 1461<br />

and the Jashar Pasha Mosque, built between the 16th and 19th centuries but all in a similar architectural<br />

style. We continue to the clock tower (Sahat kulla) built in 1764, which contains is a bell brought from<br />

Romania; the Museum <strong>of</strong> <strong>Kosovo</strong>, which presents <strong>Kosovo</strong>’s cultural heritage since pre-historic times;<br />

the Kosova art gallery; and Albanian Catholic church. We will also see the Parliament building,<br />

statue <strong>of</strong> Mother Teresa, National Art Gallery, and statue <strong>of</strong> Zahir Pajaziti, a KLA commander<br />

during the <strong>Kosovo</strong> War.<br />

Day Two - Outskirts <strong>of</strong> Pristina and beyond<br />

We will visit the Sultan Murat Mausoleum, built by Sultan Pajaziti and located where the Turkish Sultan<br />

Murat was killed during 1389’s Battle <strong>of</strong> <strong>Kosovo</strong>. The “<strong>Kosovo</strong> Heroes” monument at the battlefield<br />

commemorates the event. We will then travel to the Graçanica Serbian Orthodox monastery, built<br />

in the 14th century on the ruins <strong>of</strong> a 6th century early Christian church. From there, we will continue<br />

to the ancient Roman ruins <strong>of</strong> Ulpiana, which dates to the 2nd century and was reputedly the<br />

most beautiful city <strong>of</strong> Illyrian Dardania. A variety <strong>of</strong> items were found on the site - coins,<br />

ceramic dishes, weapons, and jewelry - which are now displayed in the <strong>Kosovo</strong> Museum.<br />

We will also visit the 14th-15th century Artana castle and marble cave <strong>of</strong> Gadime, which<br />

contains stunning stalactites and stalagmites and layers <strong>of</strong> multicolored marble.<br />

We will then visit the Brezovica ski center, located in Sharri National Park, and<br />

continue to Prizren with an overnight stay at the Prevalla resort.


Day Three - Prizren – Gjakova – along the Middle Age era trade route to Dubrovnik<br />

We will visit Prizren’s stone bridge, built in 1534 by Ali Bag; the city hamam, also built in<br />

1534; the Sinan Pasha mosque; the museum house <strong>of</strong> Prizren’s Albanian League.<br />

On June 10, 1878, patriots and intellectuals from all over the Albanian lands established the<br />

League - a political, military and cultural program to protect Albanian territories. We will then visit<br />

the ruins <strong>of</strong> the Roman-era Prizren castle, the Serbian Orthodox church <strong>of</strong> the Virgin in Ljevish,<br />

and the monastery <strong>of</strong> Saint Archangel, built near the city between 1343 and 1352. We will spend<br />

some time in the Old Bazaar, which <strong>of</strong>fers famous handicrafts made from silver filigree. On the<br />

trip from Prizren to Gjakova, we will visit the Tailors’ Bridge, a grand stone bridge <strong>of</strong> eleven arches,<br />

which was reputedly built 300 years ago by the tailors <strong>of</strong> Gjakova and Prizren as an important link<br />

in the strategic trade route known as “Via Egnatia”, the Roman road that crossed Illyricum,<br />

Macedonia, Greece and European Turkey. In Gjakova, we will visit the bazaar area, which<br />

exemplifies <strong>Kosovo</strong> traditional architecture; the Hadum mosque; “Teqja e Bektashive,”<br />

a feudal house; and the Cathedral <strong>of</strong> Saints Peter and Paul.<br />

Day Four - Mirusha Waterfalls - Deçan - Peja<br />

We visit the waterfalls on the Mirusha river and continue towards Peja, stopping en route at the<br />

Serbian Orthodox Deçan monastery, and the patriarchate in Peja, both <strong>of</strong> which feature outstanding<br />

examples <strong>of</strong> paintings from the 13th to the 17th centuries. The Dukagjini region, which includes<br />

Prizren, Gjakova, Deçan and Peja, is well known for its large number <strong>of</strong> “kullas,” traditional<br />

Albanian stone houses dating from the last decades <strong>of</strong> the Ottoman Empire. We will visit Haxhi<br />

Zeka’s kulla at Isniq, situated at the foot <strong>of</strong> the Accursed Mountains, 12 kilometers from Peja.<br />

We will then drive through the Rugova Valley gorge, an excellent place for camping, fishing,<br />

skiing and climbing, and the Bogë Valley. Our day ends with lunch in Istog/Burim, at the<br />

restaurant “Tr<strong>of</strong>ta”, which has the biggest trout pool in <strong>Kosovo</strong>.<br />

Upon arrival, stroll through the Old Market (Çarshia e vjeter) <strong>of</strong> Prizren and enjoy a traditional<br />

Prizreni dinner at the “Sharri” Restaurant. Dinner includes an appetizer <strong>of</strong> peppers with cream<br />

and Sharri cheese, a main course <strong>of</strong> “Tava” (a stew <strong>of</strong> vegetables and meat cooked in<br />

a casserole) with veal and baked potatoes, and salad followed by a dessert <strong>of</strong> baklava<br />

and tullumba, an oriental version <strong>of</strong> the doughnut. Then set out to experience<br />

Saturday:<br />

River on the most beautiful bridge in <strong>Kosovo</strong> and check into the Hotel Palace. After breakfast<br />

at the hotel, begin your tour at the Mitrovica Museum and visit the site <strong>of</strong> an old Hamam<br />

(“krapi,” or carp) at the “Krapi Restaurant” with journalists from the southern and northern<br />
