H Prior to the start of the main conference yesterday, nine pre-conference tutorials updated attendees on important coatings technologies and applications. Offered for the third time, the workshops were once again a great success, with almost all of the nine sessions sold out. The tutorials on antimicrobial surfaces, easy-to-clean coatings, radiation curing, waterborne high-performance coatings, smart coatings, polyurethane, titanium dioxide, antifouling coatings and anticorrosive coatings were hosted by renowned experts from industry and academia. Jamil Baghdachi of Eastern Michigan University, who presented a tutorial on amart coatings was especially enthusiastic about the high level of interest in his workshop. “It is always a great feeling when a short course is sold out,” he said. He presented a brief discussion of smart polymers and coatings, governing principles, types and examples of smart coatings, necessary raw materials application and markets. The tutorial on titanium dioxide was led by Micheal Diebold of DuPont. Coatings formulators are increasingly interested in finding ways to use less titanium dioxide without compromising performance. Therefore, it was no surprise that this tutorial had been sold out weeks before the conference started. Melinda Wales of Texas A&M University presented a review of the different technologies in the field of antimicrobial surfaces, providing an outline of current state-ofthe-art applications. Mike Jeffries of Bayer MaterialScience led a tutorial on polyurethane coatings and their typical components. His presentation included a discussion of the various polyurethane coatings technologies in use and their advantages and limitations. W. Marshall Ming of The University of New Hampshire presented assorted easy-to-clean coatings concepts and reviewed these systems in practice. H H H 8 AC Conference Update on Latest Technologies Nine pre-conference tutorials launched at the American Coatings Conference yesterday In the tutorial on waterborne high-performance coatings, lecturers Ivan Tyre of Alberdingk Boley and Tim December of BASF discussed the application possibilites for waterborne clearcoats for different substrates. Michael Dvorchak of RadTech North America led the short course on radiation curing where he gave a concise overview on the fundamentals of radiation curing coatings, their benefits and limitation. I’m looking for technologies that make coatings more flexible and robust, and I’ll absolutely be able to use the information I obtained for my future work. I learned some critical theory behind how to achieve the end goal, and some of the information is so new that it isn’t commercially available yet.” After the pre-tutorial sessions attendees discussed the lectures in front of the conference rooms tion characteristics as well as common new applications of UV curing and e-beam coatings were also explained. Encap Technologies, LLC Pre-Tutorial: Waterborne high-performance coating “I am interested in both high performance coatings and anticorrosive coatings, and enjoyed attending the tutorial on 'Waterborne High-Performance Coatings.' The technology promises to bring an enormous benefit to the coatings industry, so we need to understand the current achievements in the field and how much further it has to be developed for more widespread applications. His tutorial reviewed the fundamentals of the electrochemical processes involved and typical ingredients and formulation characteristics of anticorrosive coatings. Amanda Andrews, Wacker Chemical Corporation Pre-Tutorial: Smart coatings “I was very interested in learning more about self-cleaning coatings, especially in architectural coating applications for dock stairs. The tutorial on this subject was quite valuable in providing a survey of different technologies in this field, and I expect to use the information in my daily work. I think the topic of self-cleaning coatings is of interest to many because it will become more widely used in building applications.” www.american-coatings-show.com
