Note
This product information brochure includes
information on all pipes and pipe fi ttings currently
(August 2008) available with the new
BLS ® restrained socket joint system.
Please refer to the relevant installation
instructions for information on installing
pipes and pipe fi ttings with BLS ® restrained
socket joints.
Advantages of
BLS ® Socket Joints
The new BLS ® (Buderus Lock System)
restrained socket joint is a further development
of proven restraint systems. It is
positive locking and heavy duty, i.e. can be
used for extreme applications.
The spigot end of this joint is equipped with
a welding bead which is used to secure
segments, such as lock bolts, that are
supported by a retaining chamber which is
cast onto the socket. The reliable TYTON ®
gasket ensures the tightness of the joint.
The BLS ® restrained socket joint can be
used in a broad range of areas and is
predominantly employed in areas where
friction-locking joints reach their limits.
Depending on its nominal width, this joint
can be bent by up to 5 degrees and is
hence highly superior to other restrained
joints. These pipes can also be laid to form
comparatively tight corners. This feature is
highly important when pipes are, for example,
laid using modern trenchless methods,
are laid by mole ploughing or in rivers, i.e.
underground or under water.
The BLS ® joint is also the perfect technical
solution to above-ground pipelines, such as
bridge pipes, where the joint must be able
to accommodate changes in length caused
by temperature fl uctuations.
These joints can also be used in conjunction
with retaining rings to prevent having
to apply welding beads on cut pipes at a
later time. Please refer to our installation
instructions for further information.
Due to it's FM-Approval pipes and fi ttings
with the BLS ® joint can be used for fi re
extinguishing systems up to DN 400.
Coatings
Ductile cast iron drinking water and sewer
pipes with BLS ® socket joints are available
with the following external protective
coatings.
On the inside, the pipes are coated with
a cement mortar lining, which is based
on blast-furnace cement in the case of
drinking water pipes and on high-alumina
cement in the case of sewer pipes, in accordance
with DIN 2880.
2
Pipe fi ttings with BLS ® socket joints are
coated with a blue epoxy-resin acc. to DIN
EN 14901 on the inside and outside. This
applies to both pipe fi ttings intended for
drinking water and sewers.
Restraining ring
The restraining ring for the BLS ® socket
joint is available for DN 80 to DN 500
inclusive.
This ring is used wherever it is not possible
to apply welding beads, e.g. on cut
pipes.
When installing restraining rings, it is im-
portant to ensure that they are not fi tted inside
MMK-, MMQ-, EN- and ENQ-pieces.
Please contact our applications engineering
division before installing restraining
rings in siphons and bridge pipes, as well
as when installed on steep slopes, protective
pipes or collector pipes etc.
The permissible component operating
pressures (PFA) and angles for joints with
restraining rings correspond to the values
listed in table 1.
6
The prerequisite for this, however, is that
the screws of the restraining ring are
tightened to a torque of 50 Nm.
The installation instructions for the BLS ®
socket joint must also be observed.
