Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister
Old Masters PictureGallery
Cantherebeanyone who is not familiar
with the two cheekylittle cherubs who
perch so cutely at the feet of the “Sistine
Madonna”? Theyhave been enchanting visitors
to the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister for
morethan 250 years now.This galleryisone
of the most importantart collections in the
world and is the most visited museum of the
Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden.Every
year the galleryattracts around 500,000 art
enthusiasts from around the world.
Its international renown is due to its holdings
of masterpieces of Italian painting such
as Raphael’s“Sistine Madonna”,Giorgione’s
“Sleeping Venus”,Titian’s “The Tribute
Money” and Correggio’s “Holy Night”,aswell
as worksbyartists such as Mantegna, Botticelli,
Parmigianino,Veronese and Tintoretto.
Besides the Italian masterpieces,itisabove
all the paintings by 17 th -centuryDutch and
Flemish masters such as Rubens, van Dyck,
Rembrandt and Vermeer thataccountfor
the outstanding opulenceofthe gallery. In
other halls the gallerypresents exceptional
worksbySpanish,French and German artists
from the 15 th to the 18 th centuries.
Among the painters represented areMurillo,
Poussin,Lorrain,Dürer,Holbein and Cranach,
to name but afew.
Most of themajor workstobeadmired in
the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister todaywere
collected within aperiod of just over 50
years.Although the SaxonElectoral Kunstkammer,which
had been founded in 1560,
already contained some paintings,systematic
collecting did not takeplaceuntil the
reigns of August the Strong (1670 –1733) and
his son August III (1696 –1763). Paintings
then came to Dresden from all over Europe;
from Venice, Paris,Amsterdam and Prague,
forinstance.
In 1855 the gallerybuilding next to the
Zwinger,which wasdesigned by Gottfried
Semper, was opened. It wasone of the most
importantmuseum projects in Germanyin
the 19 th centuryand still houses the collection
today.
During the Second World Warmost of the
paintings wereevacuated. The core of the
collection survived unscathed. After the end
of the war, the paintings –likethe holdings
of manyother museums –weretransported
by the RedArmytoMoscow and Kiev. Following
the return of the arttreasures in
1955/56, work began on reconstructing the
gallerybuilding,which had been severely
damaged in the war, and it wasreopened
shortly afterwards.
