SAN BERNARDINO NATIONAL FOREST<br />
The San Bernardino National Forest and the San<br />
Bernardino National Forest Association (SBNFA)<br />
offer a bounty of outdoor adventure possibilities.<br />
Fire lookouts are open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.<br />
daily from Memorial Day to mid-November. Volunteers, trained<br />
by the SBNFA, show visitors the equipment and point out the<br />
sites that can be seen from on high.<br />
The lookout at Strawberry Peak is located off Bear Springs<br />
Road, in Rimforest off Highway 18. Its elevation is 6,143 feet.<br />
Further east off Highway 18 is Keller Peak, located past the<br />
town of Running Springs. At an elevation of 7,882, the<br />
vista is wide from this tower.<br />
Seasonal family camping is available at the Dogwood<br />
and North Shore campgrounds. Dogwood is located off Highway<br />
18 near Daley Canyon Road, while North Shore is located<br />
on Hospital Road off Highway 173. Reservations are<br />
a must and may be made at www.recreation.gov/Dogwood_Ca<br />

The <strong>Arrowhead</strong> Ranger District has hiking trails ranging<br />
in elevation from 3,000 feet to over 7,000 feet. Trail maps<br />
are available at the <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Arrowhead</strong> Communities Chamber<br />
of Commerce and at the <strong>Arrowhead</strong> Ranger Station on<br />
Highway 18 near Skyforest.<br />
Adventure Passes are required for the use of certain<br />
recreation sites and areas in the forest. Both daily and<br />
annual passes are available; they may be purchased online<br />
at www.fs.fed.us/r5/sanbernardino/ap/pass or at<br />
<strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Arrowhead</strong> <strong>Almanac</strong> • <strong>2012</strong><br />
a number of local businesses, including the <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Arrowhead</strong><br />
Resort and Spa and the <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Arrowhead</strong> Communities<br />
Chamber of Commerce.<br />
HEAPS PEAK ARBORETUM<br />
Located on Highway 18 east of the <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Arrowhead</strong> turnoff<br />
on Highway 18, the Heaps Peak Arboretum features the Sequoia<br />
Trail along which visitors can stroll and observe a variety<br />
of native plants.<br />
Maintained by volunteers from the Rim of the World Interpretive<br />
Association, the arboretum is free to the public but<br />
an Adventure Pass is required for parking. For more information,<br />

THEATER AND DANCE IN THE MOUNTAINS<br />
Whether your taste leans toward musical theater, ballet<br />
or drama, you’ll find it all in the mountain communities. The<br />
productions of the Rim of the World High School drama department<br />
have become popular with the community, whose<br />
members flock to the Performing Arts Center. For more information,<br />

The holidays would not be complete without seeing a production<br />
of The Nutcracker. The <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Arrowhead</strong> Classical Ballet<br />
Company’s production includes local students and guest<br />
