WILDHAVEN RANCH Wildhaven Ranch, created in 1994, is operated by the San Bernardino Mountains Wildlife Society. The not-for-profit organization includes a wildlife sanctuary and an education and visitation center for endangered and indigenous wild animals for the San Bernardino Mountains. At Wildhaven Ranch, community residents, visitors, groups and particularly children can gain a better understanding of our wild places and wild creatures. For those animals that cannot be sufficiently rehabilitated, Wildhaven provides a sanctuary where they can live a safe and fulfilling life. These animals, licensed to the facility by government agencies, are often used as a resource in the educational programs and provide visitors with the opportunity to observe native species in their mountain surroundings. UCLA CONFERENCE CENTER Located on 40 acres on the north side of Lake Arrowhead, the UCLA Conference Center is one of Southern California’s most desirable sites for meetings of all kinds. Private companies, as well as UCLA alumni, convene at the French Normandy-themed center year ‘round to take advantage of its meeting, dining and recreational facilities. More adventuresome guests can tackle the center’s challenge course, which includes a rock-climbing wall and a ropes course. Families can also take activity-filled vacations at the center at Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s and in the spring, all at competitive prices. The center is also the site of the annual Bruin Woods 10-week summer vacation program, exclusively for UCLA alumni and their families. The UCLA Conference Center is located at 850 Willow Creek Road. SAN BERNARDINO NATIONAL FOREST The San Bernardino National Forest and the San Bernardino National Forest Association (SBNFA) offer a bounty of outdoor adventure possibilities. Fire lookouts are open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily from Memorial Day to mid-November. Volunteers, trained by the SBNFA, show visitors the equipment and point out the sites that can be seen from on high. The lookout at Strawberry Peak is located off Bear Springs Road, in Rimforest off Highway 18. Its elevation is 6,143 feet. Further east off Highway 18 is Keller Peak, located past the town of Running Springs. At an elevation of 7,882, the vista is wide from this tower. Seasonal family camping is available at the Dogwood and North Shore campgrounds. Dogwood is located off Highway 18 near Daley Canyon Road, while North Shore is located on Hospital Road off Highway 173. Reservations are a must and may be made at www.recreation.gov/Dogwood_Ca or www.recreation.gov/North_Shore_Ca. The Arrowhead Ranger District has hiking trails ranging in elevation from 3,000 feet to over 7,000 feet. Trail maps are available at the Lake Arrowhead Communities Chamber of Commerce and at the Arrowhead Ranger Station on Highway 18 near Skyforest. Adventure Passes are required for the use of certain recreation sites and areas in the forest. Both daily and annual passes are available; they may be purchased online at www.fs.fed.us/r5/sanbernardino/ap/pass or at Lake Arrowhead Almanac • 2012 a number of local businesses, including the Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa and the Lake Arrowhead Communities Chamber of Commerce. HEAPS PEAK ARBORETUM Located on Highway 18 east of the Lake Arrowhead turnoff on Highway 18, the Heaps Peak Arboretum features the Sequoia Trail along which visitors can stroll and observe a variety of native plants. Maintained by volunteers from the Rim of the World Interpretive Association, the arboretum is free to the public but an Adventure Pass is required for parking. THEATER AND DANCE IN THE MOUNTAINS Whether your taste leans toward musical theater, ballet or drama, you’ll find it all in the mountain communities. The productions of the Rim of the World High School drama department have become popular with the community, whose members flock to the Performing Arts Center. For more information, visit www.rimdrama.com. The holidays would not be complete without seeing a production of The Nutcracker. The Lake Arrowhead Classical Ballet Company’s production includes local students and guest artists. The dancers also present a Spring Showcase each year.
