Corpus Topographicum Pompeianum production materials, 1776-1996, undated, bulk, 1960-1992 Physical Description: 101.6 linear feet, 43 flat file folders, 21 rolls Scope and Content Note Production materials for Vander Poel's multi-volume publication Corpus Topographicum Pompeianum (hereafter, CTP) comprise this series. The CTP was intended as a reference tool, providing indices, concordances, bibliography and up-dated plans for scholars studying Pompeii. The project was begun in 1958 at the urging of Matteo Della Corte, Tatiana Warscher and Axel Boëthius, and work continued into the 1990s. The earlier material in the date range of the series consists primarily of reproductions of eighteenth- and nineteenth century materials made for research purposes. Although published under Vander Poel's name, the series was actually created by the Research in Campanian Archaeology group (RICA), which consisted of Vander Poel and a staff of researchers, especially Laurentino García y García and Armando La Porta. As with any publication with such a long history, the CTP went through many different configurations, with varying titles and volume numbers, over the years of planning. In the end, five volumes, II, III, IIIA, IV and V, were published. Of particular interest to scholars, however, is the material compiled by Vander Poel but not published. Five more volumes, I, IIIB, IIIC, IIID and IVA, were left in various states of preparation and there is further material not clearly given a placement in the numbering system. Much of the material presented in this subseries lacks a specific date and individual items are therefore marked as undated. However, for original research a date within the range from circa 1958 to 1996 can be assumed. Arrangement The CTP production materials are arranged in twelve subseries. The first ten subseries correspond to the volumes of the CTP series and are presented in numerical order. The last two subseries contain material outside the current volume numbering system, including the alphabetical and numerical indices and general material. 2002.M.16 170

This volume was meant to catalog all street entrances, with bibliography, dates of excavation and prosopography, as well as topographical and archaeological data. Because this volume was never published and its content overlaps to a degree with the text of the CTP III insular volumes, the material intended specifically for the volume can be hard to identify. Included here is all research based on structures and street entrances that is not clearly and directly connected to the CTP III volumes.
