Counseling Psychology
Master of arts Program
Encompassing the mission of John F. Kennedy University and the
College of Professional Studies, the Master of Arts in Counseling
Psychology program supports student learning and faculty
involvement that integrates academic endeavor, clinical practice, and
the unique development of each student. The goal of the program
is to develop excellent future practitioners. The program and
experienced faculty achieve this by providing intimate classroom
learning experiences, offering hands-on supervisory feedback in
clinical practicum settings, and encour aging personal exploration
and growth in the student’s own psychotherapy experience.
Graduates of the program proceed to licensure and professional
positions providing mental health services in a variety of settings.
The necessity of post-degree learning is encouraged and
emphasized.
The MA degree program in Counseling Psychology with an
emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy is designed to prepare
students for future clinical practice as marriage and family
therapists (MFTs) in both private practice and community-based
agencies. The curriculum covers a breadth and depth of core
knowledge and skills in the field through a variety of theoretical
orientations to therapy. The program is committed to interweaving
essential themes such as community mental health practice,
cultural diversity, systemic thinking, collaborative treatment,
wellness, resiliency, recovery, and the impact of social stressors
throughout sequential coursework. Additionally, the program
encourages students to increase their self-knowledge through an
ongoing examination of their own values, beliefs, cultural
backgrounds and contexts, abilities and growth areas. The guiding
philosophy of the program resides on the perspective that achieving
proficiency in these areas prepares future clinicians to provide
effective culturally-sensitive services for a wide range of clinical
situations, from those that may be brief to those most severe,
co-occurring and persistent. The program teaches and trains future
clinicians through a combination of didactic and experiential
classroom learning and supervised intensive fieldwork. The
program reflects contemporary issues in the field and essential skills
of effective practitioners.
This innovative, applied, 87 unit program is composed of three
phases: Phase I (coursework), Phase II (field placement,
coursework, and written comprehen sive examination), and Phase
III (field placement, coursework, and oral comprehensive
examination). Successful completion of each phase is required in
order to advance to the next phase.
Students have a choice of full- or part-time programs at the Pleasant
Hill or Campbell campuses, including a morning option as well as
the traditional late afternoon/evening program. In addition,
accelerated full-time cohort programs are available at the Berkeley
campus and at the Santa Cruz/Central Coast campus.
The student body is highly motivated and diverse. Faculty are an
experienced group of practitioner-scholars who bring current
knowledge and professional experience to the classroom.
