dissertation extension<br />

Students who have not completed a clinical dissertation project<br />

prior to beginning the internship must register for PSd 7302<br />

dissertation (0.5 units) and pay a dissertation fee for each quarter<br />

that the dissertation remains unfinished. PSd 7302 may be taken a<br />

maximum of three times for credit (1.5 units). The student must<br />

continue retake PSd 7302 until the dissertation is complete, but<br />

will not receive more than 1.5 units in total. (Students who began<br />

prior to fall 2006 may take PSd 7302 four times for credit.)<br />

advancement to Candidacy<br />

In order to advance to candidacy at the end of year three of the<br />

program, each student must have satisfactorily completed all<br />

coursework, all practica, the Comprehensive Written Exam, the<br />

Clinical Proficiency Examination, and the clinical dissertation<br />

proposal defense. The student may then enter into an approved<br />

intern ship and begin the final phase of the program.<br />

individual Psychotherapy<br />

All students in the doctor of Psychology program are required to<br />

complete at least 50 hours of individual psychotherapy within an<br />

18-month time period prior to beginning internship. Psychother apy<br />

must be with a licensed therapist. Students do not receive academic<br />

credit for psychotherapy.<br />

licensure<br />

Completion of the Psyd from <strong>John</strong> F. <strong>Kennedy</strong> <strong>University</strong> makes<br />

students eligible to apply for licensure as a psychologist. The<br />

licensure process is regulated by the California Board of Psychology,<br />

and requirements currently include a minimum 3,000 hours of<br />

verified supervised professional experience. Licensing statutes and<br />

regulations are subject to future legislative or administrative<br />

revisions. doctor of Psychology students will be kept informed<br />

about licensing requirements and any changes that occur. The Psyd<br />

program maintains an active relationship with the licensing board.<br />

degree requirements<br />

To receive the doctor of Psychology degree, the student must meet<br />

the following requirements:<br />

• The Comprehensive Written Examination and the Clinical<br />

Proficiency Examination must be passed.<br />

• Fifty hours of personal psychotherapy must be completed.<br />

• All training logs and supervisors’ evaluations must be submitted<br />

to the Training Office.<br />

• The dissertation must be successfully defended.<br />

• After admission to the doctor of Psychology program, all<br />

academic requirements must be completed in residence, except<br />

for transfer credit units.<br />

• A full-time load of 9 units per quarter must be carried for a<br />

minimum of one year.<br />

• A minimum grade of B- is required in each course applied to the<br />

degree.<br />

• An overall grade-point average of 3.0 must be achieved in all<br />

work for the Psyd.<br />

• All program requirements must be completed within eight<br />

calendar years of matriculation.<br />

• Candidates for doctoral degrees are required to file a Petition for<br />

degree and pay the required fee by February 15 of the year prior<br />

to beginning internship.<br />
