• Creative process. demonstrated awareness of creative poten tial<br />

and modalities of expression available to groups. relation ship<br />

between creativity and group dynamics as well as links between<br />

individual creative process and development of pedagogical<br />

structures for creative work with others. demon strated<br />

commitment to ongoing, self-directed, creative activity which<br />

informs and inspires community activity.<br />

• Professional practice. Ability to inspire and encourage others<br />

in the creative process. Competence in all professional prac tices<br />

associated with the candidate’s chosen career path in the arts.<br />

Awareness of potential venues for developing individual<br />

approaches to creativity in the community.<br />

• Academic competence. Knowledge of contemporary and<br />

historical philosophical foundations for art as healing and social<br />

intervention. demonstration of competent awareness of<br />

contemporary philosophical and psychological principles related<br />

to candidate’s creative work and community activity.<br />

demonstration of ability to research and analyze creative<br />

activities using APA style and accepted forms of academic<br />

writing.<br />

• Spirituality and personal transformation. demonstrated<br />

aware ness of links between inner and outer realities. Evidence<br />

of substantial personal and spiritual growth as a result of creative<br />

self-expression. Articulation of links between personal crea tive<br />

experience and spiritual awareness.<br />

admission requirements<br />

Applicants to the MA degree in Transformative Arts have often<br />

been admitted with undergraduate degrees in areas other than art.<br />

Students enter from the humanities and the sciences as well as from<br />

backgrounds in the arts.<br />

Arts & Consciousness admits students to the MA program in fall<br />

or spring quarters.<br />

An undergraduate degree in art is not required for admission to<br />

the MA in Transformative Arts program. However, it is essential<br />

that students have some previous background in the arts.<br />

Appli cants to the MA in Transformative Arts program must<br />

complete at least six units of work in studio art, musical<br />

composition, poetry, or another primary art form. Applicants must<br />

also complete a survey of art history course.<br />

In addition to the <strong>University</strong> admission requirements (listed<br />

previously), applicants to this program must submit an artist’s<br />

statement addressing the applicant’s artistic development and<br />

goals. This may be included in the personal statement. Applicants<br />

must also submit a portfolio of original artwork which may be<br />

submitted in person during an admissions interview. Slides, vHS<br />

cassette, audio cassette, or Cd/dvd are acceptable. Portfolios may<br />

include artwork in non-visual media, e.g., poetry, dance and<br />

movement, or writing.<br />
