PlS 3025 <strong>Business</strong> organizations 3<br />
This course will provide the student with the introduction to the<br />
formation, operation, and dissolution of various kinds of busi ness<br />
organizations including the different kinds of corporations, sole<br />
proprietorships, and partnerships. Focus will be placed on the laws<br />
that govern business organizations and the procedures for forming<br />
entities and maintaining compliance with statutory requirements.<br />
Prerequisites: PLS 3001 and PLS 3002.<br />
PlS 3027 family law 3<br />
This course will introduce the student to the broad area of family<br />
law including the fundamental principles underlying the marital<br />
relationship, dissolution, child custody, and support. Students will<br />
learn how to become an effective paralegal in a family-law practice<br />
by the drafting of the various documents relating to domestic<br />
relations. Prerequisites: PLS 3001 and PLS 3002.<br />
PlS 3029 Civil Trial evidence 3<br />
This is a survey course designed to examine the basic principles of<br />
evidence in the civil trial arena. This course will focus on both the<br />
federal and California rules of evidence as well as the appli cation of<br />
those rules in the civil trial process. Prerequisites: PLS 3001 and PLS<br />
3002.<br />
PlS 3031 intellectual Property 3<br />
This is a survey course of the principal types of intellectual<br />
property—trade secrets, patents, copyrights, and trademarks—as<br />
set forth in federal and state statutes and further defined by case<br />
law. Prerequisites: PLS 3001 and PLS 3002.<br />
PlS 3040 internship 1–3<br />
This course will provide the student an opportunity to gain practical<br />
paralegal work experience in an office environment. The student<br />
must work a certain number of hours in the office environment<br />
under the supervision of an attorney or experienced paralegal.<br />
(Note: Students would be encouraged to take an internship as one<br />
of their two electives, especially those who are not currently working<br />
in law firms. However, an internship is not required since many<br />
students may be working full time in other employment or have<br />
responsibilities that would preclude an internship during regular<br />
office hours.) Prerequisite: PLS 3002 and PLS 3008, each with a<br />
grade of B- or better.<br />
PlS 3100 law office administration 3<br />
This course will focus on the role of the paralegal as an office<br />
administrator. The organizational structure of law offices will be<br />
explored as well as the role of the paralegal within these struc tures.<br />
Students will be introduced to the day-to-day duties and<br />
responsibilities of managing a legal office with emphasis placed on<br />
computer calendaring systems, accounting practices and software,<br />
and overall law office management. Prerequisites: PLS 3001 and PLS<br />
3002.<br />
PlS 3105 Jurisprudence 3<br />
This course studies the nature, purpose, and philosophy of law.<br />
Gives the student exposure to the roots of law historically and places<br />
the legal system in perspective by examining its antece dents in<br />
religion, sociology, and philosophy. Prerequisites: PLS 3001 and PLS<br />
3002.<br />
PlS 3107 history of the U.S. Since World War ii 3<br />
An introductory course designed to provide a thought-provoking<br />
treatment of the American past, focusing on the latter half of the<br />
20th century, which at least one historian has called the age of<br />
extremes. This course is intended to put into historical perspec tive<br />
the dominant public events of the times. It comprises an approach<br />
to the study of history that seeks to identify possible connections<br />
among many factors—the political, social, and economic trends and<br />
cultural developments that have shaped and reshaped our society.<br />
Prerequisites: PLS 3001 and PLS 3002.<br />
PlS 3109 Constitution, Supreme Court,<br />
and american democracy 3<br />
Introduces the student to major constitutional law decisions of the<br />
Supreme Court in selected areas and also explores the role of the<br />
Supreme Court in the American government system and the<br />
political impact of its actions. Prerequisites: PLS 3001 and PLS 3002.<br />
PlS 3111 law and Social Justice 3<br />
This is a survey course examining the civil rights of the various<br />
groups studied including people of color, people with disabilities,<br />
and gays and lesbians. Sexual discrimination against both women<br />
and men will be studied as well. Prerequisites: PLS 3001 and PLS<br />
3002.<br />
PlS 3113 Social, Cultural, and Political issues<br />
in <strong>Business</strong> 3<br />
Addresses the interaction of law and business and the societal issues<br />
that must be a part of successful and responsible business activities.<br />
Prerequisites: PLS 3001 and PLS 3002.<br />
PlS 4900 Topics in Paralegal Studies 3<br />
Topics vary according to need and interest. This course may be<br />
repeated for credit with a change in topic.<br />
PlS 4998 Senior Project a 3<br />
A consecutive two-quarter course which is intended to serve as the<br />
capstone of the BA program. The course provides students the<br />
