Counseling Specialization<br />

The 9-unit Counseling Specialization offers undergraduates a<br />

unique opportunity to study and apply the basic psychological,<br />

developmental, and mental health principles involved in counseling<br />

psychology. our holistic, transformative approach to counseling<br />

emphasizes cognitive, affective, behavioral, and spiritual change.<br />

In addition to taking Introduction to Counseling, students choose<br />

three of the following courses: Group Dynamics, Community<br />

Psychology, Transpersonal Psychology, Somatic Psychology, and<br />

Death, Dying & Bereavement.<br />

Clinical counselors help individuals and families overcome mental<br />

health challenges and emotional issues that prevent them from<br />

living life to the fullest. They may work with a wide range of clinical<br />

populations, including those with severe or chronic mental illness,<br />

Transpersonal Studies Specialization<br />

The 9-unit Transpersonal Studies Specialization addresses the<br />

spiritual dimension of human identity and experience—what<br />

Abraham Maslow called “the farther reaches of human nature.” The<br />

interdisciplinary and crosscultural curriculum focuses on the<br />

development and integration of the whole person: body, mind,<br />

emotion, and spirit. The person is seen as an integral part of family,<br />

society, humanity, living systems, the planet, the cosmos, and the<br />

transpersonal realm.<br />

Courses investigate: models of transpersonal development; the<br />

varieties, causes, and effects of spiritual experiences; pioneers in<br />

but typically they see clients who are struggling with more common<br />

mental and emotional problems such as depression, anxiety, grief,<br />

relationship issues, personal crises, or other life challenges. Clinical<br />

counselors conduct clinical interviews, develop treatment plans,<br />

provide psychotherapy, and collaborate with physicians and other<br />

specialists on medication and related interventions. They assist<br />

clients with identifying personal emotional issues and behavior<br />

patterns that may be hindering them and with working through<br />

those challenges in a safe and supportive space. Clinical counselors<br />

work in a wide range of settings, including private practice,<br />

community agencies, public and private schools, colleges and<br />

universities, hospitals, and other mental health facilities.<br />

Choose 9 units from recommended list below. Courses can be<br />

substituted with approval of your advisor.<br />

and spirituality; living systems; and, relationships among self,<br />

society, and the natural world. Students will become knowledgeable<br />

about basic concepts and theories as well as historical and current<br />

trends. They will also have opportunities to further their<br />

psycho-spiritual devel opment through self-exploration and the<br />

application of transper sonal principles and practices to their own<br />

lives.<br />

Choose 6 units from the Psychology major and 3 units from the<br />

Liberal Arts major. Recommended specialization courses are listed<br />
