courses and the required number of units. Required courses or
electives in the first major may serve as electives in the second
major, and required courses in the second major may serve as
electives in the first major. Courses required in common may be
applied toward both majors. Students who double major should
expect to complete more than 180 units in their combined
baccalaureate program.
eligibility
Students who demonstrate superior academic work and the
potential to succeed in two concurrent majors will be permitted to
double major. Eligibility is based upon the following factors:
• A GPA of 3.5 or higher in coursework completed at JFKU.
• Successful completion of CoR 3100 Critical Thinking and
Writing and CoR 3145 Research Writing with a B+ or better
in each.
• An interview with the advisor of each program and the
advisors’ judgment that the student is self-moti vated, can
follow a study plan, and demonstrates the ability to successfully
complete both majors.
• Newly admitted students are not permitted to double major;
students may add a second major only after successful
completion of CoR 3100 and CoR 3145.
application Procedures
The student initiates a meeting with advisors from both majors,
and together they carefully craft a mutu ally agreeable study plan.
The student submits a Change of Program form with a copy of the
approved study plan to the registrar’s office in order to have the
second major entered onto the student’s record.
The registrar’s office will complete an evaluation of the student’s
degree progress in the double major.
The registrar’s office will notify the student and advisor of the
student’s academic progress (by means of a degree audit).
additional requirements
Students must complete Service Learning A and Service Learning
B in a manner that demonstrates competency in both majors. In
addition, students must complete Senior Project A and Senior
Project B by completing a final paper that is approximately twice
the length required for one major in order to demonstrate
competency in both major areas. The final paper should include
approximately twice the number of bibliographic sources, with
equal respect to both majors. It is the responsibility of the student
and both advisors to monitor the progress of the student and to
ensure these additional requirements are satisfied.
financial aid
Students can take 50% more units than ordinarily required for a
degree without jeopardizing eligibility. For example, a typical
baccalaureate degree requires 180 units, so undergraduate students
may take up to 270 units toward a bachelor’s degree. Students are
strongly cau tioned that additional financial aid requirements apply,
and they must meet all financial aid requirements in order to
receive aid. Students who receive or expect to receive financial aid
should consult with a financial aid advisor for details.
Ba in Philosophy and religion
Note: No new students may begin this program after Spring 2010.
Students currently enrolled will be allowed to complete this
program. Please consult the program for details.
The so-called “big questions” of life—questions about the nature
of reality and the self—are not diversions or entertainments. It is
through such questions that we define ourselves and our
aspira tions; it is through them that we define our possibilities—as
individuals, as a culture, as a species. Using a history of ideas
approach, the BA degree-completion program in Philosophy and
Religion addresses these questions, drawing from disciplines
throughout the humanities including literature, anthropology,
music, philosophy, art, religion, psychology, and consciousness
studies. Courses are designed to promote critical reflection on both
traditions and transitions, on the degree to which our past
inevitably defines us, and on the attempts throughout history to
rethink and redefine the human project.
Program learning outcomes
• Demonstrate the capacity for critical thinking and writing.
• Demonstrate proficiency in conducting academic research.
