Student Photo Identification Cards<br />

student iD cards are distributed by the registrar’s office at the<br />

time of registration. The cards serve as student identification for a<br />

variety of on-campus services, including the library and computer<br />

labs, and must be updated each year for a student to have library<br />

borrowing privileges.<br />

a current photo iD may be required for students to participate in<br />

internship and placement opportunities. iDs may be updated at<br />

the registrar’s office in Pleasant hill or Campbell, or the Berkeley<br />

library.<br />

Textbooks and Course Materials<br />

textbooks and related course materials (called coursepacks) are<br />

available through the <strong>University</strong>’s virtual bookstore, MBsDirect.<br />

students can access MBsDirect by visiting http://direct .mbsbooks.<br />

com/jfku.htm. links to MBsDirect are also available from the<br />

<strong>University</strong>’s website. Course readers are available from Copy<br />

Central. students can access Copy Central by visiting http://www.<br />

CopyCentral.com.<br />

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act<br />

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy act of 1974 (FERPa)<br />

affords students certain rights with respect to their educational<br />

records. These rights include:<br />

• The right to inspect and review the student’s education<br />

records within 45 days of the day the <strong>University</strong> receives<br />

a request for access. (a list of the records that may not be<br />

reviewed by a student is available in the <strong>John</strong> F. <strong>Kennedy</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> Policy and the Family Educational Rights and<br />

Privacy act of 1974, expanded version, a copy of which may<br />

be obtained in the registrar’s office, Pleasant hill; the College<br />

of law, Pleasant hill; and at the student services office,<br />

Campbell.)<br />

• Students shall submit to the registrar, dean, head of the<br />

academic department, or other appropriate official, a written<br />

request that identifies the record(s) they wish to inspect.<br />

• If the records are not maintained by the <strong>University</strong> official<br />

to whom the request is made, that official shall advise the<br />

student of the correct official to whom the request should be<br />

addressed.<br />

• The <strong>University</strong> official responsible for the records will make<br />

arrangements for access and notify the student of the time<br />

and place where the records may be inspected.<br />

• The right to request the amendment of the student’s<br />

education records that the student believes is inaccurate.<br />

• Students may ask the <strong>University</strong> to amend a record that they<br />

believe is inaccurate. They should write the <strong>University</strong> official<br />

responsible for the record, clearly identify the part of the<br />

record they want changed, and specify why it is inaccurate.<br />

• If the <strong>University</strong> decides not to amend the record, the<br />

<strong>University</strong> will notify the student of the decision in writing<br />

and advise the student of his or her right to a hearing.<br />

• After the hearing, if the <strong>University</strong> still decides not to amend<br />

the record, the student has the right to place a statement with<br />

the records setting forth his or her view about the contested<br />

information.<br />

General Information<br />

• The right to file a complaint with the U.S. Department of<br />

Education concerning alleged failures by <strong>John</strong> F. <strong>Kennedy</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> to comply with the requirements of FERPa. The<br />

The <strong>University</strong> may disclose, without consent, directory<br />

information. at JFK <strong>University</strong>, directory information includes the<br />

following:<br />

• Name, address, e-mail address, and telephone number(s)<br />

• Major field of study<br />

• Period of enrollment<br />

• Awards and degrees received from JFK <strong>University</strong><br />

• Current enrollment status—full-time/half-time, inactive.<br />

The <strong>University</strong> must have written permission from the student<br />

in order to release any information, other than directory<br />

information, from a student’s education record. however, FERPa<br />

allows colleges to disclose student records without consent to the<br />

following parties or under the following conditions:<br />

• To personnel within the <strong>University</strong> who maintain educational<br />

records and those with a legitimate educational interest<br />

including faculty or staff who deal with the student and carry<br />

out education duties and employees designated by them<br />

to assist in these tasks. <strong>John</strong> F. <strong>Kennedy</strong> <strong>University</strong> defines<br />

“legitimate educational interest” as “needs the record(s)<br />

to carry out employment responsibilities.” Therefore, any<br />

<strong>University</strong> employee (or person acting on behalf of the<br />

<strong>University</strong>) may have access to student records without the<br />

student’s written consent if that person needs the access to<br />

carry out his or her employment responsibilities.<br />

• Other colleges to which a student is transferring;<br />

• Specified <strong>University</strong> officials or contracted agents for audit or<br />

evaluation purposes;<br />

• Appropriate parties in connection with financial aid to a<br />

student;<br />

• Organizations conducting certain studies for or on behalf of<br />

the <strong>University</strong>;<br />

• Accrediting organizations;<br />

• Appropriate parties in compliance with a judicial order or<br />

lawfully issued subpoena; and<br />

• Appropriate officials in cases of a health and safety<br />

emergency.<br />

it is JFK <strong>University</strong>’s policy to release official transcripts only upon<br />

the written and signed consent of the student and upon payment<br />

of the fee for each. to protect each student, a record is kept for one<br />

year of transcripts issued and of any persons or institutions (other<br />

than JFK <strong>University</strong> officials) which have, upon student consent,<br />

been granted access to the student’s records.<br />
