TPC 5250 Basic addiction Studies 3<br />
Basic information about alcoholism and chemical dependency<br />
including definitions, effects on substance users and their<br />
envi ronments, medical aspects, etiology of substance abuse, major<br />
treatment approaches, and available community resources. The<br />
course is taught from a systems perspective and covers spiritual and<br />
nutritional issues in chemical dependency.<br />
TPC 5325 ethics and the law 3<br />
This course familiarizes students with the existing legal and ethical<br />
issues facing therapists including MFT licensing require ments and<br />
California laws for psychotherapists. Issues are explored through the<br />
examination of personal values and biases. Must be taken prior to<br />
field placement.<br />
TPC 5422 Cross-Cultural issues in Counseling 3<br />
An overview of cross-cultural issues related to counseling. Special<br />
emphasis is placed on fostering an understanding of cross-cultural<br />
dynamics in counseling through an examination of the historical,<br />
political, and sociocultural issues that impact ethnic minority clients.<br />
TPC 5703 Clinical Skills: Partner and Spousal abuse,<br />
elder Care 2<br />
This course looks at the whole family system and the impact of<br />
violence and abuse upon it. Trauma issues and their impact on each<br />
family member will be discussed, as well as the physiological effect of<br />
trauma on the brain. Topics include identification and treatment of<br />
abusers; victims and the children and teens living with them;<br />
attachment and physiological issues that keep couples together;<br />
identification, treatment, and reporting issues of elder and child<br />
abuse; cultural, religious, and GLBT issues and abuse; and<br />
countertransference issues. In addition, mental health issues in aging<br />
and long-term care will be addressed. Therapeutic strategies will be<br />
presented to enhance collaboration between families and care<br />
providers and maximize quality of life for the elder client.<br />
TPC 5705 Counseling Case Seminar: individuals 3<br />
Students present internship cases from the field to be used as sources<br />
of discussion and analysis. Open only to students in the counseling<br />
degree program. Prerequisite: TPC 5751 or TPC 5756.<br />
TPC 5749 Supplemental fieldwork experience<br />
Monitoring 1<br />
Individual evaluative consultations which review students’ progress<br />
in supplemental external fieldwork placement. Student and faculty<br />
meet a minimum of once per quarter to review placement,<br />
evaluations, and fulfill BBS requirements for hours of experience<br />
toward licensure. Prerequisites: TPC 5214 and TPC 5325.<br />
TPC 5751–54 field Placement a–d 3/3/3/3<br />
In this four-quarter sequence, the focus is clinical fieldwork under<br />
supervision. Students train at community mental health sites, schools,<br />
hospitals, hospice centers, therapeutic nurseries, the JFKU Center for<br />
Holistic Counseling, or other sites. Students gain firsthand knowledge<br />
and experience working with individu als, couples, and families.<br />
Supervision is provided by qualified, licensed therapists. Permission<br />
of program director is required.<br />
TPC 5755 field Placement 1–3<br />
A fifth quarter of field placement may be arranged by special<br />
permission.<br />
TPC 5792 Practice of group Psychotherapy 2<br />
Students receive comprehensive training and supervision in the<br />
practice of group psychotherapy. As an MFT trainee, the student<br />
co-facilitates a weekly therapy group and participates in group<br />
supervision for two hours each week. Students learn how to plan and<br />
publicize a group as well as how to establish and maintain a<br />
therapeutic group culture.<br />
TPC 5793 Child and adolescent<br />
Therapy in the School 2<br />
Students receive comprehensive training and supervision in the<br />
practice and treatment of children and adolescents in the school<br />
setting. As an MFT trainee, the student will work with children and<br />
adolescents and participate in group supervision for two hours each<br />
week.<br />
TPC 5900 Topics in Transpersonal Psychology 1–3<br />
Topics vary and may be repeated for credit with a change in topic.<br />
TPC 5995 independent Study in Transpersonal<br />

TPC 9005 Personal Psychotherapy 0<br />
Students must register for this course when they have completed their<br />
personal psychotherapy requirement.<br />
TPC 9015 Child abuse assessment and reporting 0<br />
This course covers topics including recognizing child abuse, sexual<br />
abuse, neglect, and physical and emotional abuse; legal definitions of<br />
child abuse; legal reporting requirements; crisis intervention for<br />
victims, families, and abusers; cross-cultural concerns;<br />
countertransference issues; and community resources.<br />
TPC 9020 Special Topics 0<br />
This course is reserved for students who have returned to the<br />
program after an absence or who have transferred into this program<br />
from another one in the College of Professional Studies. This zero<br />
unit course offers no academic credit, but allows students to enter<br />
into the appropriate course at the Program’s discretion. Students<br />
enrolling in this course will attend the same sessions and be<br />
responsible for the same assignments as students enrolling in the<br />
appropriate course. Permission of the Program is required to take this<br />
course. Offered as needed; credit/no credit only.<br />
