attachment and physiological issues that keep couples together;<br />

identification, treatment, and reporting issues of elder and child<br />

abuse; cultural, religious, and GLBT issues and abuse; and<br />

countertransference issues. In addition, mental health issues in aging<br />

and long-term care will be addressed. Therapeutic strategies will be<br />

presented to enhance collaboration between families and care<br />

providers and maximize quality of life for the elder client.<br />

SPC 5705 Counseling Case Seminar 3<br />

This course focuses on clinical case presentation for students in field<br />

placement. Case presentations from the student’s current placement<br />

serve as a starting point for lecture, clinical discussion, exploration<br />

of diversity issues, role-play, and self-exploration within a somatic<br />

psychology perspective. This class supports students in acquiring<br />

professional competence in the important clinical skill of case<br />

presenting. Co-requisite: SPC 5762.<br />

SPC 5760 Supplemental fieldwork<br />

experience Monitoring 1<br />

This course consists of individual consultations which review<br />

students’ progress in supplemental external fieldwork placement.<br />

Student and faculty meet a minimum of once per quarter to review<br />

placement and evaluations and to fulfill BBS requirements for hours<br />

of experience toward licensure. The permission of the program<br />

director and advisor is required.<br />

SPC 5761–64 field Placement a–d 3/3/3/3<br />

In this four-quarter sequence, the focus is clinical fieldwork under<br />

supervision. Students train at community mental health sites,<br />

schools, hospitals, hospice centers, therapeutic nurseries, the JFKU<br />

Center for Holistic Counseling, or other sites. Students gain firsthand<br />

knowledge and experience working with individu als, couples, and<br />

families. Supervision is provided by qualified, licensed therapists.<br />

Permission of program director is required.<br />

SPC 5765 field Placement 2<br />

This course may be required if a student needs any additional<br />

quarters of clinical work.<br />

SPC 5792 Practice of group Psychotherapy 2<br />

In this course, students receive comprehensive supervision for their<br />

field placement practice in group psychotherapy. MFT trainees who<br />

are facilitating weekly therapy groups participate in group<br />

supervision for two hours each week. Students learn how to plan and<br />

publicize a group and to maintain a therapeutic group culture.<br />

SPC 5793 Child and adolescent Therapy<br />

in the Schools 2<br />

Comprehensive training and supervision for the counseling of<br />

children and adolescents in the school setting. MFT trainees work<br />

with children and adolescents and participate in group supervision<br />

for two hours each week.<br />

SPC 5900 Topics in Somatic Psychology 1–3<br />

Topics vary and may be repeated for credit when the subject matter<br />

changes.<br />

SPC 5993 integrative final Project a 1<br />

This course is a personal reflection, research, and writing seminar<br />

which supports students in organizing and writing the final project<br />

of the Somatic Psychology program. The class includes examination<br />

of the philosophical, personal, and professional issues raised in their<br />

course of graduate study in somatic psy chology. Students develop an<br />

outline for an integrative paper about their work and explore their<br />

special professional interests. This is the first in a two-course<br />

sequence.<br />

SPC 5994 integrative final Project B 2<br />

This is the second in a two-course sequence. Students complete an<br />

integrative final project paper and give a presentation of their work<br />

within the class. Students take this course when ready to complete<br />

their paper. Prerequisite: SPC 5993.<br />

SPC 9005 Personal Psychotherapy 0<br />

Students must register for this course in the quarter in which they<br />

expect to complete their personal psychotherapy requirement of 48<br />

therapy hours.<br />

SPC 9015 Child abuse assessment<br />

and reporting 0<br />

This course covers topics including recognizing child abuse, sexual<br />

abuse, neglect, and physical and emotional abuse; legal definitions<br />

of child abuse; legal reporting requirements; crisis intervention for<br />

victims, families, and abusers; cross-cultural concerns;<br />

countertransference issues; and community resources.<br />

SPC 9020 Special Topics 0<br />

This course is reserved for students who have returned to the<br />

program after an absence or who have transferred into this program<br />

from another one in the College of Professional Studies. This zero<br />

unit course offers no academic credit, but allows students to enter<br />

into the appropriate course at the program’s discretion. Students<br />

enrolling i ed to take this course. Offered as needed; credit/no credit<br />

only.<br />

Transpersonal Psychology [TPC] Courses<br />

TPC 5000 introduction to the<br />

Transpersonal Psychology Program 0<br />

This course will orient students to how the program flows and what<br />

they need to know in order to complete their program.<br />

TPC 5004–06 group Process a–C 2/2/2<br />

In a group context, students use traditional and transpersonal<br />

counseling techniques to examine and work with their own and<br />

others’ feelings, motivations and patterns of behavior. Topics include<br />

group theory and dynamics, stage development, leader ship and<br />

implications for group therapy. during the third quarter students<br />

gain first-hand experience in facilitating the group (with the<br />

instructor as consultant).<br />

TPC 5104 Professional integrative Project a 1<br />

This first course in a two-course sequence helps students clarify their<br />

professional focus and articulate their theoretical perspec tive.<br />

Students develop an outline for an integrative paper about their work<br />

that explores their transpersonal directions.<br />
