PSY 5620 Muticultural Competence in<br />
Counseling and Community Practice 3<br />
This course provides specific exposure to core elements in<br />
multicultural counseling. The course is specifically designed to<br />
enhance students’: a) awareness and appreciation of their own<br />
cultural identities through theoretical frameworks; b) understanding<br />
of variables that affect engagement, assessment, treatment and<br />
optimal therapeutic outcomes for diverse individuals, couples and<br />
families; c) knowledge of evidence-based practices,<br />
community-defined evidence and cultural adaptation of effective<br />
practices; d) essential understanding in working with systems<br />
including agencies, organizations and communities; and e) skills in<br />
committing to cultural competence (and related influences such as<br />
power, privilege, historical inequities, social justice, immigration,<br />
acculturation, social marginalization, etc.) as an ongoing,<br />
developmental process in becoming and practicing as therapists.<br />
Prerequisite: PSy 9001.<br />
PSY 5635 ethics and the law 3<br />
Examines legal and ethical issues related to the professional practice<br />
of psychotherapy and counseling, focusing on the field of marriage<br />
and family theory. Includes therapeutic, clinical, and practical<br />
considerations; legal trends; practitioner values; sense of self; and<br />
professional behavior. Co-requisite: PSy 5231.<br />
PSY 5740 Theory and Practice of expressive arts<br />
Camps 3<br />
Theory and practice of developing an expressive arts laboratory for<br />
children. Child development and the psychology of creativity are<br />
covered as well as the logistics of planning and implementing a camp<br />
experience. Emphasizes skill development in group facilitation and<br />
conflict resolution. required prior to field place ment at JFK<br />
<strong>University</strong>’s expressive arts camp. This course fulfills PSy 5120C for<br />
Expressive Arts specialization students.<br />
PSY 5760 expressive arts Therapy: The Creative<br />
Process 3<br />
Historical and theoretical overview and the therapeutic use of the<br />
creative process. Includes experiential exposure to a variety of visual,<br />
movement, and other arts modalities and media.<br />
PSY 5770 group Process and expressive arts<br />
Therapy 3<br />
Participation in and study of group dynamics through the use of<br />
expressive arts. Modalities such as movement/dance, visual arts,<br />
music, and drama are used to facilitate and examine the group<br />
process. This course fulfills PSy 5120G.<br />
PSY 5990 Master’s Thesis Proposal 3<br />
Students develop a proposal for a master’s thesis and learn to<br />
synthesize prior professional work or study in pursuit of a specific<br />
area of research or application. Prerequisite: PSy 5054.<br />
PSY 5991a–C Master’s Project a–C 2/2/2<br />
required of students completing a master’s thesis. Thesis typically<br />
takes two to three quarters and is completed under the supervision<br />
of a faculty advisor. research begins at least two quarters before<br />
anticipated graduation. A maximum of six units may be applied to<br />
the degree. Prerequisite: PSy 5990 and com pleted thesis contract.<br />
PSY 5992 Supplemental Thesis assistance 1–6<br />
Supplemental assistance addressing individual student needs in<br />
completing the master’s thesis. Students consult with relevant<br />
faculty to recruit a supplemental advisor. Prerequisite: PSy 5991C<br />
PSY 5995 independent Study in Psychology 1–6<br />
Allows for individual study in a special interest area not offered as<br />
a regular course. To be arranged with consent of instructor and<br />
approval of the dean. May be repeated for credit with a change of<br />
topic.<br />
PSY 5997a–C Master’s Project a–C 2/2/2<br />
required of students completing a master’s project. Project typically<br />
takes two to three quarters and is completed under the supervision<br />

PSY 6257 advanced field experience and internship:<br />
Post-Master’s 1–4<br />
Advanced field experience at the JFK <strong>University</strong> Community<br />
Counseling Center for students in the post-master’s training<br />
program. Includes individuals, couples, groups, and families. Must<br />
be taken each of the program’s three quarters. Post-mas ter’s students<br />
only.<br />
PSY 6300 advanced family Therapy 3<br />
Considers the evaluation of individuals and families and the<br />
formulation of treatment goals and treatment plans. Includes the<br />
psychodynamic and interactive approaches to brief therapy and the<br />
systems and structural approaches to family therapy. Post-mas ter’s<br />
students only.<br />
PSY 6320 use of Self as family Therapist 3<br />
Focuses on psychotherapeutic treatment strategies for clients with<br />
particular character styles (e.g., hysteric, obsessive, border line<br />
narcissistic). Course concentrates on the “how” of doing therapy<br />
with such clients. Post-mas ter’s students only. Post-master’s<br />
students only.<br />
PSY 6330 advanced Couple Therapy 3<br />
recurring issues and areas of difficulty in the life of a family.<br />
Includes a developmental perspective, the emergence of critical<br />
incidents, problem assessment, and treatment approaches.<br />
Post-mas ter’s students only.<br />
