Non-Registered Students<br />

Persons whose names do not appear on the class list or roster<br />

are not registered for the course. Fundamentally, a person who is<br />

not registered has no relationship with the <strong>University</strong> and is not<br />

entitled to any services including instruction, testing, evaluation,<br />

disability services, or submission of a grade.<br />

Persons sitting in a course who have not arranged for payment<br />

of tuition and fees or are deviating from the curriculum without<br />

approval will be administratively deregistered. The college dean<br />

and the instructor will be notified of the deregistration.<br />

Persons who are sitting in class and are not on the class list or<br />

roster will be asked to leave the course until they are registered.<br />

Return to the class is only allowed when a copy of the Student<br />

Data Sheet showing enrollment in the course with stamped proof<br />

of payment is provided to the instructor.<br />

Graduate Work by Undergraduates<br />

Undergraduates who are adequately prepared to undertake<br />

advanced work may enroll in master’s-level courses. Written<br />

permission must be obtained from the student’s undergraduate<br />

advisor and the dean or program chair of the graduate college prior<br />

to registration. in some circumstances, written approval must<br />

also be obtained from a graduate advisor. if approval is granted,<br />

the graduate units apply only to the bachelor’s degree, unless the<br />

student has been admitted to a linked-degree program.<br />

Maximum Unit Load<br />

Both undergraduate and graduate students who wish to register<br />

for more than 12 units per quarter must obtain written approval<br />

from the college dean.<br />

Independent Study<br />

independent study offers students an opportunity for individual<br />

or tutorial instruction in areas not covered by regularly offered<br />

courses. such study is student initiated and student planned, but it<br />

must be directed by a JFK <strong>University</strong> faculty member.<br />

a student who wishes to undertake independent study must<br />

obtain the permission of the college dean or program chair. The<br />

student is expected to demonstrate to the dean’s satisfaction that:<br />

(1) the planned course of study cannot be completed through a<br />

regularly offered course; (2) the proposed study is demonstrably<br />

upper-division or graduate-level academic work; (3) the student<br />

workload standard of 30 hours per unit of credit will be met; and<br />

(4) the content, objectives, and timetable of the study have been<br />

carefully planned.<br />

When independent study is approved, the dean or program chair<br />

assists the student in selecting a faculty member to supervise the<br />

project. The student and faculty supervisor prepare a Contract<br />

for Independent Study detailing the objectives of the course, the<br />

materials and projects to be completed, arrangements for meetings<br />

between student and supervisor, units of credit to be given,<br />

number of student-applied hours required, number and dates of<br />

examinations and written assignments, and criteria for evaluation.<br />

The contract also establishes a date by which the student must<br />

complete all specified work.<br />

When the Contract for Independent Study has been completed and<br />

signed by both the dean or program chair and faculty supervisor,<br />

the student submits it to the registrar’s office and pays the tuition<br />

and the appropriate non-refundable fees. The deadline for<br />

registration is Friday of the sixth week of the quarter.<br />

No work should begin on an independent study project until all<br />

approval and registration procedures have been completed. Forms<br />

and instructions may be obtained from the registrar’s office.<br />

The dean has immediate responsibility and the vice President<br />

of academic affairs the ultimate responsibility for the quality of<br />

independent study. independent studies are reviewed periodically<br />

by the vice President of academic affairs to ensure that completed<br />

work meets <strong>University</strong> standards of academic excellence.<br />

Credit by Assessment<br />

Master’s-degree students may use Credit by assessment<br />

(CBa) to fulfill only undergraduate prerequisite requirements.<br />

Undergraduate students may petition for credit for prior learning<br />

through CBa. students interested in CBa should contact their<br />

department or program chair.<br />

CBa cannot be used to obtain credit for coursework already<br />

completed, some degree requirements may not be eligible<br />

for satisfaction through CBa. Check with the department or<br />

program.<br />

a maximum of 30 quarter units may be earned through Credit<br />

by assessment. The assessor determine the units awarded and<br />

the academic level of those unit (lower or upper division). The<br />
